Like you say:Markgway wrote:Interesting. Almost every review I've read mentions the dialogue being sub-par (at least for Tarantino). I'll check it out on DVD. Not much desire to see Planet Terror.
"At least for Tarantino".
Lesser QT dialogue is still way better than most other director's dialogue. People's expectations were too high. It worked for me. TBH I've not got a huge desire to see PT either, except to complete the Grind House experience, which is good enough reason.
At lot of people complained about the fact the main parts are all women (except for Russell) as if women aren't allowed to be the main parts.

I had a feeling the first half was set in some alternate universe. It definitely looks very much like the 70s.

Silver Hawk
6 out of 10
Okay so it's really cheesy in places, Michelle Yeoh's suit looks ridiculous, the dialogue can be really bad, the English dubbing (thankfully kept to a minimum on the Cantonese version, it's at least Michelle Yeoh's voice) is awful and what is Luke Goss thinking? But bar all that I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would.
Michelle Yeoh has lots of charisma which helps a lot. The action was decent with some decent fight sequences and they managed to keep each fight fresh.
Sure it's no classic and Michelle Yeoh is way above the material but boy it's far better than most of the Hong Kong Martial Arts dross that most people on this forum think are classics (it's better than Drunken Master 2
).
All in all not bad, it should've been better but not bad. It's better than Michelle Yeoh's previous martial arts outing "The Touch".
The extras suck but the AV quality on the HK DVD is excellent, great thumping 5.1 surround and a stellar transfer.

70's bars basically
America is so big I am sure many places still look like the 70's.
Planet Terror is the one I am looking forward to the most, it looks mental, and has got the best feedback thats for sure. People seem split with Deathproof, some hate it, some like it.
At least Planet Terror seems to be more consistent, in that people love it for what it is a big mental gore filled fook fest. The cast alone makes it must see for me, bring back the 80's stars!

I think the problem was that the parts written for women sounded like a guy's idea of how women would talk and weren't credible. That's what I read anyways...bradavon wrote:At lot of people complained about the fact the main parts are all women (except for Russell) as if women aren't allowed to be the main parts.

He doesn't really like old skool kung fu movies like Drunken Master or SITES, and is IIRC not too keen on Police Story either.
No matter how much you dislike Drunken Master 2, to deem it lower than Silver Hawk is a bit silly.

While I think Drunken Master 2 is overated, the action alone makes the film (the storys crap, as is most other things about it) but the action alone is so impressive.
Silverhawk, shit story, shit acting, shit actors and shit action
nothing going for it at all in any way for me, the Panda sums it ip perfectly

The Simpsons Movie - 4.25/5
Again, really enjoyed it. In some ways even funnier, as I spotted things I missed
"You have so many looks!"
EPA man: Sir, I think you have gone mad with power
Ross: Of course I have. Have you ever tried going mad WITHOUT power? It's boring. No listens to you.
Lovejoy: I want you all to confess to something...
Homer (points at Flanders): GAY GAY GAY GAY...
The chilli induced Spider-Pig scene is hilarious

Eye in the Sky - 4/5
I thought this was an excellent debut from Yau Na Hoi. It offers something different to the cop movie genre by having the emphasis on surveillance, and the techniques used in this area of police work. It was very refreshing, and had me engrossed from beginning to end. Newcomer Kate Tsui was a bit weak (not much expression) but all the seasoned veterans are all on form here. I loved all the character quirks; e.g. Simon Yam likes to tell bad jokes, Maggie Siu is very foul mouthed. Tony Leung Ka Fei is also excellent as the cool and calculating mastermind, who is prone to exploding with brutal acts of violence.
Invisible Target - 2.5/5
Not as bad as it looked from the trailer. Enjoyable fluff, but instantly forgettable.
Flash Point - 3/5
Maybe not as good as SPL. The beginning is a bit slow, but once it kicks into gear (after about an hour!) it really kicks off! The rest of the film is all action goodness. It doesn't offer anything we haven't seen before, but still manages some good action scenes. The fight between Donnie and the guy from Kung Fu was a bit of a letdown, but Donnie vs Colin Chou really kicks ass. Personally, I love all the MMA techniques (wrestling, Judo, Ju-jitsu) used by Donnie in the choreography. It offers something different, and Donnie makes it look very brutal and effective.

I guess pouring on that much glowing cinematography (a Jingle ma special) and hysterical melodrama is a safe bet. It should not be but sometimes it amazingly does work in that flick.BiscLimpkit wrote:Unless they come up with a fluke. i.e. Fly Me to Polaris.Knetan wrote: another case of the fact that certain cinematographers should stick to what they do best.
