The Biscman has landed a job

Post by BiscLimpkit »

Yeah I've finally completed my 5 year degree in Mechanical Engineering. I'm 100% through with academics. I start my job in August...

I'll be a graduate engineer - doing a whole bunch of stuff, it's pretty cool.

Sorry I'm kinda vague, really super shattered. I have some much needed sleep to catch up on.

Bisc, out.:cya:

Great news man, Congratulations! So how much money will you make? Company car? Free snacks in the lunchrooms? :)

Cheers for kind words.

My salary is typical for a graduate engineer, which isn't a lot (£23k) but hopefully it will rise as I do my chatership. Some of my brighter classmates are making £30k. I think I get a car if I need to travel between offices.

No free snacks I'm afraid.

Brad, the statistics for Mechanical Engineering students is very good. In Scottish universities, around 98% of graduates get a job offer. At my University (Strathclyde), everyone gets at least 2 offers - I've seen some people get 3. I'm pulling the average down with my one measly job offer. Oh well, it's money in my pants anyway. :drunken:

hehe, only a graduate going for a graduate job would say 23k isnt a very high starting wage! ;)outside of graduate jobs and London starting wages are traditionally around 12-13k for a skilled or tertiary job, less for unskilled jobs.

still, totally awesome dude, youve certainly earnt it! :D :D I hope life outside education suits you well and hopefully we'll bump into each other online sometime!

23K for your first job is fantastic. LOL and you say it's not a lot. How old you Bisc? As 23K is nearly double the national average. No matter how you look at it it is very good.

I've been working for 5-6 years and am not on that + I know a few fair people who have degrees and are not on that.

p.s - Exactly Mordib £12-13 is the average for most starters.

I'm 22, I didn't know 12-13k was the national average. Guess I should be grateful then, I appologise if I came across as a snob there. :?

My dad's been encouraging me to try and get a 30K salary. He was pretty disappointed that I didn't even make 25k but said I had to start somewhere.

I'm in around 10K debt. So first priority = pay off student loan!!! (second priority = as Romero says, buy more DVDs).

Is your Dad in a good job? No offence but that's sounds a bit snobbish to expect 30K in your first job but I guess if you've earned it . . .

22 earning 23k is way above average. I'm 26 and one £18k but that's low. Most of my mates are on 20k+ but none are on 30k, even those who have degrees.

It's mainly my fault I'm not on more as I've put off the training I need to progress. I'm concentrating on my driving lessons right now but when that's out of the way I'll be doing them. Microsoft certified in Windows XP Networking to be precise. I can already do a fair amount of it but it's just proving I can and saying I'm Microsoft certified means a HUGE amount.

Bisc. has a degree it "should" make a difference!

I have further education which without it I wouldn't be on what I'm on now. At the time I was so fed up with education I couldn't do anymore. I still have no interest in it (i.e - college, uni etc . . .).

I studied for a while and have loads of qualifications and stuff, but it means fook a in the real world as I soon found out  in fact my college days were pretty much a waste of time, I could have had a job in the time I was there and earned a load of cash to get a house.

What level though? Having a Clait RSA 1 in Word Processing isn't going to get you far. Bisc has just proven having a Degree can work and besides when is learning ever a waste of time?

I wouldn't have got my last two jobs without my qualifications no way.

Hey bisc congrats wit the new job. 23k starting salary is fantastic for a first job. If your working for a global oil company I expect your salary will sky rocket in 3 years!

I guess it all depends on what you graduate in. I bet no one will pay 23k to a guy who did a degree in Bekham :D

wolf that is the single greatest avatar ive seen this year...

anyway, pulling myself away from the hypnotic kitty for just a moment, degrees allow you to go for graduate jobs. graduate jobs are fasttracks to the top. In the IT field it can take 3-5 years on non graduate jobs before you are earning the same as someone whos gone straight into a graduate job.

but then thats the choice, fasttrack, career orientated, thrive on stress, get rich quick - degree or work your way up. I chose the latter even though I got a degree, but then I dont really have big career ambitions... ;)

Man, I've been working like a dog for 20 years and I'm on 16K and that's the best it's ever been. Learning is the way to go, not passing the opportunity up to earn a bit of piss money instead like I did.
Well Done bisc :D you deserve it. And to you too Nilsy.
I, myself have recently been taken on full time. It's boring, unrewarding work but like I said, it's the best paid job I've ever had and the best payer I'll get with my quals and experience.

Ok I need advice here - I've been made a 2nd job offer. However they are offering me less (£21k). I think both jobs involve the same amount/type of work.

How do companies generally respond when you ask them to match/surpass another offer? I've got nothing to lose from asking anyway so I might as well go for it... what do you guys think?
