Dances With Wolves (Director's Cut): 4/5
Outstanding film. Everything about it is just brilliant. I love the way a lot of time is spent showing Dunbar getting to know the Indians slowly, with his commentary adding depth to the story. This film is nearly 4 hours long but it doesn't feel it at all. The time flies & I don't think it could've worked as a standard length (say 2 hour) film... There's just so much of the story to explore & everything is so detailed.
One of my favourites. It had been so long since I last saw it, I'd forgotten how good the film is. So many scenes just wouldn't have worked as well if they were cut down, such as the time Dunbar spent alone, the nights spent with the tribe, and in particular the scenes with the wolf.
Excellent stuff.

The Director's Cut is the better film but the shorter Theatrical Cut also works.
Statham has mostly picked average actioners to, he's a better actor than most of the films he picks.
Is Kiera overrated? She doesn't exactly ever get good press, especially on the acting front. It's her celebrity status that gets more press.
McAvoy was excellent in Last King of Scotland. He was funny on Parky last w/e too.
It looks to much like Cradle 2 the Grave/Romero must die for my liking. Jet Li must have a rubbish American manager as he/she can never pick him a decent American film. He's only made 1.5 decent Western films and those 2 were French. Jasonsaltysam wrote:War 2/5
passable but ultimately disappointing jet li/jason statham actioner.curiously flat action scenes despite corey yuen being the choregrapher.

Interesting I've heard nothing but praise for this. I thought it looked decent but not one I'd go to the cinema to see. Most period dramas bore me too.IronMonkey wrote:Atonement - 2/5
Kiera Knightly has to be the most overrated actress I've ever watched. James McAvoy was excellent but I found the film to be pretty dull overall. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be; just not my cup of tea, thats all.

Not at all, everyone with a brain knew it would go to number one, even if it was the worst film ever made according to critics and net boys.saltysam wrote:Romero won't be on for a while.he's gone out on a bender celebrating RE3 debuting at no.1 at the usa box office 8)
If we got it over here at the same time, then I would be happy!

just watched:
Dracula: Prince of Darkness - 4/5
Classic Hammer horror movie, its great. Remember when I saw this on last night BBC during the 80's and it has lost none of it charms. Great Gothic set, I really enjoyed it. One brillant small extra on the disk from Hammer Collection, Christopher Lee just talks about his past, it is a great insight on what he has done, he talks about Dracula and all other roles including his favorite role ever - the part played in the Wicker Man. He sounds and look very down to earth guy, it was a great extra. One of the few actors I would love to see in real life
Manhunter - MGM Release - Japanese DVD - 4/5
What can you say about this movie, it is great I loved it. The MGM release is great, I have the Anchor Bay Limited Edition, but this just blows it out of the water. The opening scene is still haunting as ever, the filter is great from the killer point of view in the beginning. I haven't seen the movie was some time fully, so I didn't notice the difference between the workprint and TC, but I will watch it again

Cool. I'm not exactly sure how the Workprint differs (any ideas?) but the Director's Cut adds (and removes) a fair few scenes. I checked a few of them out and they were all pretty pointless, adding nothing.slasher13 wrote:Manhunter - MGM Release - Japanese DVD - 4/5

It wouldn't be so bad but the DC isn't really watchable, every time a new scene comes in the quality drops dramatically which is especially annoying as Mann put in some minute additions all over the place.
The scene right at the end after Dollarhyde is killed when Will visits the couple Dollarhyde was to kill next is so pointless and actually lessons the film. Why Mann would want that but NOT the scene where Will sympathises with Dollarhyde is beyond me (which is exclusive to the Theatrical Cut), and I suspect everyone else.
Why do you say the JPR2 blows the Anchor Bay out of the water? Which is interesting as the JPR2 isn't remastered well not using the Anchor Bay Divimax Remaster anyway.
My UK R2 SE arrived the other day which has the Divimax DC and the same Workprint on the old Anchor Bay LE. Both are very good quality. I cannot say I can see much quality difference. It will be interesting to see how they compare.
Any ideas why the film was never any bigger? It has a huge cult following but outside that no one has ever heard of it.

Keep in mind that there're are TWO DCs. One is longer, but is absolute shit and unwatchable reportedly. The other was remastered in HD, supervised by Mann (a scene was also removed that was in the original DC):

You can never find anything in this big ass review thread.
Brad, watch the retrospective featurettes on the Workprint disc. There's some discussion of the film's reception.
EDIT: Bradavon: Arse I clicked EDIT instead of QUOTE, sorry.

Interesting thanks I didn't know that. I'll think of the new DC as the Director's Cut just like Alexander: DC and Blade Runner: DC are no longer Director's Cuts despite the confusing title.EvaUnit02 wrote:Keep in mind that there're are TWO DCs. You'd think Mann would've kept a better copy for himself then a VHS.
Exactly why I try not to use it.EvaUnit02 wrote:You can never find anything in this big ass review thread.
Thanks. I watched bits of those but not all of them.EvaUnit02 wrote:Brad, watch the retrospective featurettes on the Workprint disc. There's some discussion of the film's reception.

Or you could just save yourself a bunch of trouble and just buy the Director's Edition of the vastly-superior "Red Dragon" (flame away).
Funnily enough I preferred Red Dragon to Manhunter for a good few years after I saw Red Dragon.

Shoot 'Em UP - 4/5
Way better than I expected it to be. I was expecting a John Woo rip-off. Instead, it was "Crank" with a lot of gun battles. The film doesn't try to be more than it is. A fun actioner that doesn't waste time explaining unnecessary things like how did they find them or where do all these thugs come from etc.
