I'll pick up the Shamploo boxset once it is on sale, or maybe wait for a HD Boxset to come out...
It's a good, fun show.

I've only seen the first 4-5 episodes of GITS. It was hit-and-miss for me, with some of the interesting and fun, while others were a bit boring. looked very good though.

So am I still the only one here who's watching Mushishi!?

Voices from a Distant Star - 5/5
Spectacular, now that's what I call a film. So much raw emotion in such a short runtime. Heartbreaking shit man. I will definitely watch Byousoku 5 Centimeter soon.

I saw some s-CRY-ed, it was ok; not a keeper. Watched about half of Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, hillarious stuff; definitely will pick that up sometime.

So it's basically just the "fish-out-of-water" comedy shit from the original series taken to the nth degree? That stuff was fucking lame and unfunny. "HAHAHA, Sousuke doesn't know how to behave in an everyday environment and his superior officer is a 16 year old girl who commands a battleship!" The blue-haired chick is the type of bitch I'd throw down a flight of stairs in a heartbeat.

The original series was by GONZO.

Well I finshed off the Patlabor OVA, really enjoyed it. I don't know about the background to its production but it felt very much like a bit of a concept or pilot of sorts. The well established setting and characters not to mention the variation in plot is just too much for a brief OVA series. I'm looking forward to watching the first movie.

The R1s were distributed by the parent company of U.S. Manga Corps IIRC, they pulled out of the DVD market for some unexplained reason.

Looks like Madman gone an excellent job on The Castle of Cagliostro, see http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Re ... sp?ID=7903

This is a special edition which is Native PAL beating the old version and some great extras. Better than R1 because it is not double sided!!

Macross Plus OVA is fantastic, I watched it late last night and couldn't help but stick around for the whole thing leaving me quite tired this morning. Story, animation and music are all excellent and only just short of the best anime films. A little too much action which makes narrative feel a bit broken up and also takes too much of the budget resulting in the framerates they animated at being a little low overall. But it really is very good and I like that they used an existing name/setting to add a sense of establishment without going mad. The cynic in me says that was more about attracting investment and attention though... :)

I had a look at the R1 release today, one glance was enough, the R2J remaster is the only acceptable purchase. I have synched subs for the OVA discs, only reason I watched it over the Movie version. Hope I'll have subs for that the next time I want to see some Macross+.

Hmmm... I have the Macross Plus OVA. Watched it a few times over the years, but TBH, it hasnt really impressed me all that much. The main characters nor the story are very appealing to me.

Okay I suppose the characters and story aren't that good upon objectively reflection. I just feel that all the elements combine into something that is very cinematic.

A competitive rivalry, a woman in-between them. Yup, definitely a classic cinematic formula.

Oh and the Gabriella Robin soundtrack is truly awesome.

Anyone who has been holding off on buying Kon's excellent Paranoia Agent series in R1 might not want to wait too much longer as Geneon is pulling the plug on its US distribution in November.

I've been watching Nadia in between catching up on my reading. I'm not sure it's something I'd watch again (a la Champloo) but it's certainly very good and definitely one to see if you like Miyazaki or Anno.
Miyazaki created the concept for Toho but it was never made until much later when Gainax took it up. So you notice a lot of Miyazaki in it because he used some of the ideas in Laputa and his other works, not to mention that Anno has worked on Nausicca previously. This is yet another Anno work where he got pissy and depressed about creative control (when doesn't he?) but it's so Gainax. You notice so much that you'll see later on in other Gainax and Anno works.
Superficially it's a sort of Jules Verne story with the usual Japanese touches ("HA HA HA HA HA" villains"). Capering kids and inventions and that sort of thing, it's even a little Lovecraftian at times. But what surprised me was how much feeling there is. It gets almosy deep and introspective at times, very Anno like.

Anyway I'm about 3/4 through and I've certainly liked it, I'm surprised it doesn't get more attention really. You have the fun Miyazaki type story with that Gainax attention to detail and emotional edge. Not bad at all.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 2nd Gig - 4.25/5
As densely-plotted and almost as thoroughly well written as the first season, but not as cohesive. The antagonists and their ultimate motives were revealed too early in the plot IMO. The story of 1st season was utterly enthralling, making you want to see the next episode to help further unravel the mystery of the Laughing Man and the massive political conspiracy. 2nd Gig's story just was far more cut and dry - not as interesting TBH.

Other than that production was top notch. The entire series oozes Kamiyama's natural talent for direction - scenes are perfectly edited to another fantastic Yoko Kanno score.

I didn't much like 2nd GIG personally, I'd give it a 3 and that's almost all for the production values. The overall plot was senseless. It'd flit from one thing to the other without providing any sense of the motivations behind what was happening. Some episodes were very good but only individually.

SSS is also disappointing in this way.
