Psycho a slasher flick - WTF???
Slasher film History wrote: Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) is sometimes described as the mother of all slasher films. Although there are only two murders in the story, the idea of a disguised and insane killer came to prominence with this film. However, unlike other slasher films inspired by it, the characters in the film are well developed and revolve around a far more complex storyline. Indeed, the murderer's insanity is also clearly explained in comparison to other slasher film villains. Psycho was so influential that many critics see it as a turning point in cinema history. It marked the transition from the Gothic horror of vampires, were-wolves and monsters to modern issues and fears. The famous "shower murder" with its screeching violin soundtrack is perhaps the most famous scene in horror film history. However, although it directly inspired the subsequent slasher genre,

He was even in it! I was too stunned by its blandness to notice.

Give me a real horror film anyday.

Plenty (Psycho, The Exorcist, The Frighteners, The People Under the Stairs...)

Very few slashers have a decent plot, however.

Elm. St for all its flaws is one; but I certainly would not say Friday the 13th has a good plot. It's a terrible film and the synopsis can be summed up in one line: psycho slashes dumb over-sexed teens in secluded camp.

Psycho could be classed as the orignal slasher, but it's not usually thought of in those terms because it's a great film, and the terms slasher and great are rarely found together.

Johnny Depp showed no signs of talent in Elm. St. I guess it proves you shouldn't judge an actor by any single performance.

How would I know if I did not watch them? There is no rule saying films get worse as a series goes along thats for sure. The best films of the series were later anyway, but none were great films thats for sure.

The best Friday the 13th films are the last 2, Jason Goes To Hell and Jason X, so that logic doesnt work for me at all. The first few were pure shit.

1 & 3 were the best imo, Number 6 was the worst and the last one was a wes craven wankfest, too pretentious for words.Jason Vs Freddy was much more fun and made a lot more money.

As a general rule (that is "usually" right) films tend to get worse the more sequels/prequels they make.

Yup that last one New Nightmares was the best made, best acted, but felt soooo wrong.

Freddy Vs Jason beats all the Elmstreet films thats for sure :D

Nope, I do not agree with that at all, bollocks in fact.

Maybe some films you like are like that, definatly not the ones I like or many people I know like or many of the best films ever made either that millions like :D

A Nightmare on Elm Street maybe the only series that actually does get worse with each instalment, until they stopped with the numericals.

1 was good, 2 was interesting, 3 was alright, 4 was pushing it, 5 was lame, 6 was cat piss; New Nightmare was good, Freddy Vs Jason was average.

Friday the 13th on the other hand is all over the place.

1-4 were fucking boring, 5 was the first watchable entry, 6 was actually pretty good, 7 was a step back, 8 was reasonable; Jason Goes to Hell was arse, Jason X was arse in space.

More like a guideline. The Star Trek films totally blow that "rule" out of the water.

Wasn't that a given? :D

Why do you always use the bollocks "many people I know like" point? Come up with a new point.

Isn't that what I said?

That is a definite exception. Parts 2 and 6 being easily the best. I do like Part 1 too though, more than 4 in fact. Part 1 is a decent Sc-fi. They went down hill after Part 6 and stopped being cinematic. They're long TV movies now. I even liked Part 10.

Halloween II 2.5/5

Surprisingly decent sequel. I love Donald Pleasence's line delivery and Dean Cundey's atmospheric photography (I'd say the film looks better than the original). The director creates some good suspense and I'd like to see a dir's cut before Carpenter messed about adding violence. It's not as strong as you would find in a film today, but the scene where the ward sister is drained of her blood grossed me out (anything medical - like Laurie getting the syringe). lol.

It was good but nowhere near as good as Parts 2 or 6, they're so epic.

Why? its true  you want me to lie and say everyone I know loves part 1 of every film :D

and again I couldnt disagree more with the sequels get worse thing, most of the best films ever made are sequels.

Still I have yet to see any Haloween Sequels, they just never have apealed to me for some reason. Only seen Haloween H20, which was fine I guess :) the others just kind of seem out there, but not a must see like other sequels.

Ooo I just read this bit :(. Nightmare has more flair I think then Halloween, whereas Halloween is a straight slasher, Wes Craven put a twist in the movie. Of course, he did tread back to his old movie, ie Last House on the Left, and Deadly Blessing, if you watched any of those, you can see the 2 scenes in Nightmare. But Nightmare had great touches, like the mood music when you were watching the dream sequence, I find that far superior then to the Halloween theme. The whole story is very well written and the original ending is great. (Evil doesn't win), if they chopped off the last bit which Bob from New Line wanted in, then it would have been the perfect movie without any of the sequels.
