bradavon wrote:I used to own the original DVD but sold it and have kept my Remastered 2 Disc SE. I don't mind losing the blue as the Remastered version does look so much better. The 2 disc Remastered version (i.e - Divimax) has the commentary (ported from the LD) and the 87 minute documentary found on disc 2 of that set.
Hmm... you make it sound appealing.

Does it have the original mono track? That's a dealbreaker.
If Anchor Bay had reused the remastered print but fixed the blue, added the commentary and included the TV Cut into that 4 Disc set it would've been definitive.
That'll be for the 30th anniversary reissue, lol.

Found an image comparison here:

http://www.pulsingcinema.com/reviews/hdvd/

I have to say I agree with Brad: the Divimax/25th looks better. Not massively so, mind. The colours seems more natural. Look at the cap where Jamie is standing on the porch. The light on the 1999 transfer is blue, which seems unlikely, but it's like a regular yellow bulb on the Divimax. Could ABE have actually FIXED the colours instead of messing them up? Is anyone here old enough to have seen this in theatres, lol? Or remember the VHS releases? :P

I also found this snippet on REWIND:

"Dean Cundey (Director of Photography) personally supervised the [1999] THX transfer and it is believed that his aim was to present the film as he would have wanted it to look had he had a big enough budget."

That makes it sound like HE messed about with the original look?

My head hurts. :?

That comparison doesn't really give a true representation IMO. I'd say the Divimax is a big leap forward, especially in the colours. They're too washed out on the old DVD.

According to this review (and others) the R1 Divimax SE has the Original Mono, it's actually a very good technical review I'd give it a read:

http://www.dvdtown.com/reviews/halloween/1827

The UK R2 version of this just has a DD2.0 and DD5.1 remix. As far as audio the original DVD has Mono on R1 or UK R2 but the Remastered Divimax SE does not (just R1).

The old transfer is VERY grainy as well. It is perfectly watchable though (it's how I first saw the film). Also remember it's essentially a DVD-5 as it also has the silly 4:3 version wasting space.

If you do get the new Remastered DVD forget the upcoming 2 Disc SE and get the older SE (known as the Divimax edition) with the commentary and 87 minute documentary, both ace and neither are on the new 2 Disc SE by the looks of it. I'm repeating myself aren't I :D

In my opinion you're losing too much just to retain the blue parts!

Do you even understand what you're saying whenever you comment on DVD transfers or do you just pluck out random adjectives and hope to god they make even the slightest bit of sense?

I've ordered the blu-ray :P will keep the older dvd for the tv version which only succeeds in padding the movie but is an interesting curio and may never see another release.

No. Why do you say that? What I said does make sense and is correct too. I used to own the original DVD (the one with the Hologram) and now own the Divimax.

Besides if I'm wrong please correct me, at least then that would useful to Mark ;)

I think I might try and check out the film via "alternate" means as £18 (for the 4-dsic set) is too much for a poor sod like me to take a chance on. It's best to be sure the film's a keeper. Might do the same for the sequels. I'd hate to waste a load of cash on a film series and wind up keeping none of them! I've owned tapes of Parts 1, 2 & 4 (the only worthwhile entries) in the past, but that was a while ago, and my opinions may have changed since.

I know what you mean. There is always eBay though. I buy films planning to keep them but if I don't I just sell them on.

Brad when you make comments like "washed out" the fucking comparison grabs themselves correct you. Anyone with half decent eyesight or even the most rudimentary of knowledge of DVD transfers can clearly see that the 1999 transfer just has different colour balance, in terms of colour saturation (which is what you're talking about) you can clearly see in some grabs that the 1999 actually has slightly stronger colours in certain areas (the first grab for instance actually has a blue sky).

The Divimax transfer is not how the film should look, again you can clearly see in those transfers how they've neautralised the correct colour scheme of the film, removing the blue tint in the night time scenes (btw Brad the blue tint in the night time scenes is why the colours appear colder, they aren't washed out), and removing a lot of red in the daytime images.

So yeah Brad, another thread where DVD transfer is discussed, another demonstration why you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about in this area. You're of no use to anyone when it comes to this subject, so why bother?

For me I have to have received very bad surface to completely stop using a company, especially someone the size of eBay. In the case of eBay do you mean a bad seller or actually eBay?

eBay is so big and useful it would take a lot for me to stop using them completely. They're by far the best place to get rid of unwanted DVDs, bar none.

p.s - Thanks for the clarification Shingster. I did mean washed out though when I said it, the colours aren't vibrant at all. Otherwise fair points.

Great it sounds like a good one. It would be nice if the reviewer had mentioned if the colour scheme has been fixed though.

That's right, mate.

His ebay account got hacked (and bought hundreds of pounds of shit in his name) and from there some piece of shit managed to hack into his email account (which is even worse).

The security on ebay is a fucking joke and they make it really fucking difficult to close your account.

Fuck 'em.

A friend of my Dad's had that happen to him. They started selling stuff of theirs on his account. He got a call from a buyer about a PC he wasn't selling. He just contacted eBay, they changed the password so he could get in and eBay cancelled all the auctions.

Agreed it is hard to close an account and contact them (I have several Live Chat links now saved). I completely agree they are not perfect.

I once had a case were a Hong Kongean seller sold me a fake memory card, it didn't work. I sent it back, the replacement didn't work and by this point it was over eBay's 60 day resolution policy so they flatly refused to help. PayPal were more helpful (even though it had gone over their 70 day policy). I explained to both as it took 14 days for each item to be sent and returned to HK this is why it took so long.

In the end with PayPal's help the seller eventually coughed up and gave me a refund. It took about 3 months.

But even so I still use eBay. In reality the number of problems people get compared to successful transactions is minimal. I've had 1-2 problems in over 200 transactions.

You've completely dismissed a company the size of eBay which is so useful because of 1 incident? Granted I'm sure it was a nightmare at the time but move on. People who get all flustered and outright refuse to use a company over 1 incident are just shooting themselves in the foot IMO.

Sure if eBay suddenly were all over the news for being insecure fine but these are rare incidents.

Ultimately it is you who loses out. All those DVDs you have on trade forums for months you'd shift in just 7 days. You may not always make a profit but they'll be gone and you'll have cash in your pocket.

What is the likelihood it will happen again? I presume your Dad got his money back?

You can buy any Anchor Bay version of Haloween for a few pounds! (not the new 4 dvd version obviously) they have been in sales for £1.99 brand new, both the old and new versions.

Its only £2.98 on amazon for god sake :D just get the thing.

Right. I watched the original last night.

Roughly worth 3/5

Good example of the genre, better than the remake, but I also remembered things I didn't care for such as the deathly slow pace, the overuse of the theme music, and the creepy "sex = death" ideology. I'm not gonna buy this. Might also check out Pts 2 & 4 to compare. :)

I think the pace is great as is the theme music (like Jaws). The "sex = death" ideology is a bit part of the point of the film.

The biggest problem I had was with the clunky acting but not enough to really bother me. I don't think it's a masterpiece like some (at all) but would give it a strong 8 out of 10.

Halloween 2007 TC is out next w/e. I'm tempted to check it out but just know I'll be disappointed.

Yeah, but in Jaws the theme music was used when the shark appeared, which was every so often. In Halloween it's omnipresent. There's a scene when Laurie's in class and she looks out the window and we get the theme. OK, so Myers is there for a split second, but did we need the theme music again? I started to find it distracting, and by the time it should appear the effect had worn off.

The slow pace wouldn't have been such a problem if there had been more plot, but the set-up is elementary so we have to wait for a long time for anything to happen, and we know what's going to happen from the outset.

Four characters have sex in the film (all horny teens). They all die a horrible death. The plain jane virgin lives. It's no concidence and it's something I found distasteful, uncecessary and frankly unexplained. Just what was Carpenter's point with this?

The acting was uneven. The line delivery of some of the supporting cast (Nancy Loomis, P.J Soles) was stilted. I'm not saying they gave bad performances as such, just that it sounded like they were reading a script. Best was Donald Pleasence, who actually had less secreentime than I remembered. I thought character actor Charles Cyphers did a nice job as Sheriff Brackett, better than Brad Dourif in the remake.

Nightmare on Elm Street had a good plot, nice backstory. The Original Friday the 13th was okay. Psycho was a very good slasher movie :).

I was going to say Slasher but I'm not sure I'd call Halloween a slasher flick, maybe though.

Psycho a slasher flick - WTF???
