Happy Times - 4/5
Almost every Zhang Yimou film is a fairly generic cinematic showcase without a bit true of feeling. Here we have a slight exception, because in the end - and I do mean in the end - this one will make you feel something.

Yeah, it is. Most of the early Warners titles were. Like a very good VHS. But until a motherfuckin' two-disc SE comes along it's better than nothing. So go get it cheap.

David Fincher is one of the more stylised directors of today, but his past films have lacked much substance or replay value. Seven and Fight Club are good films but honestly they're way overrated, they lose all of their impact on repeat viewings.

Oh please, the transfer's way better than VHS. One of my pet peeves is when people use the VHS tag to describe DVDs, as there are extremely few transfers for big hollywood films on DVD that come anything close to VHS quality.

To me, Seven is a classic. It's just a very good movie that is at the top in it's genre.
Fight Club, I dont know... it's just too gritty and dirty and 'out there' for me to really enjoy.
It's a technical very good movie, it's original, it has solid acting performances, it makes you think etc etc... but to me, it just wasnt very enjoyable, and I'm not in a rush to get it on DVD.
Zodiac I will probably enjoy. I like the genre, and I like the actors. One of those movies you have to watch when you're alone in bed, lights out, and coca cola and chips next to you
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...
Ow yeah, they both have lots of replay-value. I agree with that. But Fight Club isnt a FUN movie to watch. It's a bit uneasy and too gritty and in your face. So it's a very good movie, but not one that you're in the mood for watching often.
Movies like Ocean's 11 and Out of Sight, which are 'lighter' etc... do have that ability to make you want to watch it over and over, cause you're actually enjoying it when watching (at least, I keep enjoying them )

I disagree about Fight Club, I really enjoy it, I watched it last night for the first time in ages and loved it still. I watched Se7en last week for the first time in ages too and enjoyed that more than I ever have. But I prefer Fight Club.
Not sure how to rate this at the moment, in some ways I thought it was very good. Jonathan Pryce is excellent in it. The British vision of a future gone wrong is grubby and dirty, and some of the devices in the "future" looked old (tiny televisions, typewriters), seeming more like a 50's vision of the future.
However I was also left thinking "WTF did I just watch?" in places. It was very strange.
