has anyone seen the silky animation of the first one, the one made in 2004.

i saw it in HD and was quite blown away visually

the story was a bit pants though.

I hated the original and think the animation terrible, even had a look again recently to be sure. Have you seen all the CG kids shows they have these days? Painfully low poly characters with little texturing that float around like puppets and occasionally move their lips in poor synch - it's just like that. Try Innocence, Wonderful Days or Karas if you want decent animation.

I actually liked Appleseed the cgi version, never saw the 2d version which was in the 80's I think. I want to see that now, It took me a while to get into the movie, but it is pretty good, so just waiting for the sequel now

I've heard that the old 2D OVA isn't very good either, you're probably better off just reading the manga. Dark Horse recently put out new editions in the non-flipped right-to-left format and at the original manga size.
