Sunshine - 4/5
Actually better than what I was expecting :D, I kinda liked this movie, It reminded me of Event Horizion in some parts, but the pacing and everything was pretty cool. Will buy on dvd.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom - 4/5
Okay this has no story, well a little, but it works for some reason. I really enjoyed this movie, the title music is just soo good. Like seeing the Big B. I liked Preity and Bobby Deol in this, don't like Abhishek, but he is actually okay in this. Less annoying then in Dhoom movies, actually quite likeable. Would recommend to watch, may get this on dvd, it is pretty surreal movie, nice small twist at the end, which I also liked.

Got the r2j boxset, but I have a strict policy of not watching anything which I can't understand about 80% of the dialogue in. I don't know how you manage to review these films, they short on dialogue? Might watch em if the dialogue's just basic (I can watch Taifu Club without subs and understand all but about 4 scenes perfectly).

Dammit Hung, you're making me question both my love and hate for Iwai films. I've got a backlog you know, I don't have the time to reevaluate my opinions. :(
Please send me your Lily script, I think all my iterations have gone AWOL. It should be on my fileserver along with the DVD itself but I can't find either. I expect I've gone and lost the short version I made as well.

I recall liking Undo when I first saw it, btw.

I will. PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Speaking of fansubs I took down my asiandvdguide listing. Two of my scripts are now at kloofy's. The first one was my own fault, the second was someone elses... and maybe partly mine too. Either way the result is the same. And the solution is that I'll only give my scripts to people I know I can trust. Noobs are out of luck from now on.
Shingster wrote:I don't know how you manage to review these films, they short on dialogue?
In case of most of these shorts it's kinda like watching an uwe boll film without understanding the dialogue; won't make any difference. I can understand the plots and while that's not quite the ideal it's gonna have to be enough.... because I don't think anyone will ever sub these shorts and I still want to see them.

Kani kan was the only one I felt might have been more enjoyable with subs. But then again, it had very little cinematic merits so I took the right to bash it :D

But it really depends on how you see movies and what you're looking for. I always thought cinema was all about audio and visuals. It's very rare for a film to win me over with dialogue. Of course there are exceptions but I try to avoid seeing those unsubbed. In case of most movies I can tell whether understanding the dialogue would change my opinion about the movie. And if I do suspect I lost something because of the lack of subs I will mention it in my "review"

What's the prob with Kloofy's, is it that bootleggers have easy access to them? Would you mind sending me your new script for lily if I PM you my email addy? Still not watched my r3thai DVD!

I love dialogue, there's such a large part of cinema to be enjoyed from narrative and dialogue - and with all due respect, I know from test viewings that with many Japanese films (or any foreign language film) you may think you're following the film ok from catching the odd word here or there, but you aren't. I've watched chunks of many films in Japanese only & then tested myself afterwards with the subs and I'm always shocked at the differences. A m8 of mine has been learning japanese for getting on to 4 years now and even he admits he cannot in the slightest bit follow a reasonably dialogue-heavy film without subs.

I'm willing to bet that many of the films you've seen and think you followed well would be a completely different viewing experience with subs (Action films are probably the exception to this rule.). Would you consider them better or worse I wonder? :D

Yes.

Imagine this: You pay for the original unsubbed R2J. Then you invest for a subtitle source (ironically a bootleg). You rip the burnt in subs letter by letter, do manual timings because the source so bad programs can't even spot the sub stream. The source is a different cut, so that's gonna mess up the timings too. But you spent hours and hours working on it and manage to fix it all. You give the subs to some people. A few days later you see someone just uploaded a custom subbed R2J with your subs to a torrent site and all kfcc members are downloading it (:D). Or better, someone at dvdmaniacs forum is selling that customs subbed dvd-5 for 12$ at their "Do NOT trade DVD-Rs of commercially available releases in here!" section.

In fact I have seen a bunch of movies first without subs and later with subs. Never changed my mind about the film quality so far.

It really has lot to do with whether you're able to enjoy dorama kind of movies in the first place.

Do you mean films that are like Japanese TV dramas? Christ, Japanese TV dramas are dreadful.

I'll give Lily Chou Chou another go eventually.

This film was really good. I love the soundtrack! It fits the film really well and unfortunately, no official soundtrack CD has been released. Rumour has it that they are planning to do so. I doubt it, though as if they wanted to, they would have done so long time ago.

Yes.

I try to avoid those films but looking at the trailers for recent japanese films it seems like that's all they're producing anymore.

Thinking of it, I don't own more than a handful of non-kitano/iwai japanese movies from the 2000's.

Actually, I've liked the ones I've seen. But it certainly has something to do with the fact that they all star Aya Ueto :D

Movies that Ratner gave tribute to in this film:
Police Story 2
Project A
Armour of God 2
Hard Boiled

Have I missed any?
I think the Scene that is followed by Tucker`s Two Gun - John Woo sequence, when they arrive at the hopital is very much a reference to "The Godfather" :D

I also really enjoyed RH3. Probably there was a little too much light humour and most of the scene at the kung fu school was good for nothing, but overall I found the movie very entertaining. I thought it was at least as good as number 2, if not slightly better.
Jackie´s singing in the theater in Paris is my absolute favourite scene of the movie.
Hiroyuki Sanada is very cool as well. The scene's with him and Jackie are very good if you ask me (I'm not talking of the action-scenes... those could have been edited better...)

I'd also give RH3 3,5/5

An octopus doesn't process pain like we do, nor does it have such a heightened realisation of itself being eaten. I highly doubt it contemplates the philosophical and theological ramifications of it being chomped to death by Choi Min-shik.
It's still wrong to eat it whilst it's alive.

Case closed.

OLDBOY is on again later in the week so I'll try to catch the second half.

I find a lot of Asian movies of the last decade or so really pretentious.

What happened to entertainment?

Lady in the Water - 4 out of 10

Like Alexander it's really not as bad as most made out but yes it is a bit of a mess. Especially the first half, it gets better in the second half.

The story itself I did find interesting (taking on board it's a fantasy) but the script is just so poor and absolutely stupid in places. The characters in the apartment complex were mostly annoying and their inclusion was so stupid. The fantasy story was so utterly ridiculous.

In the extras M. Night explains the story was a bedtime story he told his kids, it's now also a kids book. Well frankly it should've stayed as a kids story.

Why do Asian's in Hollywood movies always talk with stilted English?

By the first half I thought about turning it off (which never normally happens) but I stuck with it. Once you've got over the sheer stupidity of what you're watching it's not too bad, but it's not great either.

M. Night needs to learn it's okay to give us fantasy and monsters (his last 3 movies have all had monsters) but put it in the realm of reality.

That's the biggest problem with The Lady in the Water, it's just so completely unbelievable. Does M. Night have to give himself bigger and bigger parts? It was funny at first but he's now giving himself major roles grrr!

There is one plus "Bryce Dallas Howard" who plays Story (the lady in the title) was very good, she has an interesting face. I loved Unbreakable and The Village, Sixth Sense was also good (I didn't much like Signs).

Like I said I enjoyed the second half more but overall it's really poor.

Best to worst M. Night films IMO:

1. Unbreakable
2. Sixth Sense
3. Signs
4. Lady in the water
5. The Village

hey,

Back Alley Princess 0/5

Overlong and unbearable, Lo Wei's 2 hour+ is prime example of skipping altogether or if you're very unforgiving, fast forward it all...even Han Ying-chieh, his whip and his whores.

Because the BBFC classified it as a clean kill, the Octopus is being devoured cleanly by a larger predator - just as itself would have gorged on shrimp, lobsters and whatnot in its native environment.

The Village was a pathetic attempt at trying to fool the audience with a surprise ending that was so incredibly predictable. But LITW isn't far behind TV.

I didn't see it coming a mile off off. If you didn't get the twist it's a real good ending, that and the whole Village aspect of a community cut off from the outside world.

All M. Night films are pathetic if you analyse them. I guess it depends how much we think the execution is good, or not.

I do find it interesting that to most he has only made one decent film yet you ask every film buff and they'll all say Unbreakable as his finest hour. The general public didn't much like that one.

Really? What a fucked up opinion. It's still man killing an animal for real on film. I don't see how it's any different from the normal animal cuts.

If I had to define "Unbreakable" I'd say it is the most realistic superhero film.

You can kill an animal on-screen so long as its either a ritualistic killing or - in special cases - a clean kill like the consuming of the Octopus in Oldboy.
