He is a babyfaced muppet but they seem to be desperate to make him into some sort of tough action star. I'm not seeing it at all, he could not look more out of place n anything the slightest bit serious. Indeed him and Leo looking like kids was one large black mark of many against "The Departed."
And today we get this:
Matt Damon yesterday used the London premiere of The Bourne Ultimatum to roundly dismiss James Bond as a Martini-sipping imperialist misogynist, the BBC reports.
Damon declared Bond "anachronistic when you put it in the world we live in today" and added insult to injury with: "Bond is an imperialist and a misogynist who kills people and laughs about it, and drinks Martinis and cracks jokes. Bourne is a serial monogamist whose girlfriend is dead and he does nothing but think about her."
Warming to the theme, Damon then concluded that Bourne "doesn't have the support of gadgets, and he feels guilty for what he's done".
Bourne trilogy director Paul Greengrass chipped in with: "The Bourne franchise is not about wearing Prada suits and looking at women coming out of the sea with bikinis on. It's about essence and truth, not frippery and surface."
Oh dear, obviously they haven't seen a James Bond movie since the 70s. I read that Brosnan was talking to Damon and mentioned how "you can't re-invent a series from the 60s, blah, blah, blah." He's so full of it. He's just jealous that he didn't get to do Casino Royale.
I read that article too, obviously Damon dislocated his ass and hasn't seen a Bond movie since about 1969, least of all the Brosnan films and the excellent Casino Royale (not that I didnt like the Bourne films).
So if they haven't seen a Bond film since around about the 60's, are you saying there hasn't been any focus on women coming out of the sea with bikinis on in a Bond film since then??!
So Bourne is now a franchise interesting. Come back Damon when you've got to 21 films.
If it's true (and not taken out of context) that's particularly bad for Greengrass, Bond is the last successfully British blockbuster we have left.
Lets face it without Bond we wouldn't have Bourne. I seriously doubt Ludlum never read Flemming's novels. I'd hazard a guess Bond will still be hear in 5-10 years, will Bourne?
The Spy aspect aside Bourne and Bond films are very different, it's a stupid comparison. Both Bond and Bourne have a place, both rock.
p.s - Except for Bourne Damon isn't a particularly good actor.
Last time I checked the last Bond movie, there was a man coming out of the sea, not a woman. And he wasn't wearing a bikini. I have no idea what kind of film mr Greengrass may have watched before making this comment, but if there was in it a man in a bikini, watching women dressed in Prada suits coming out of the sea, it was probably a blue-DVD directed by Lee Tamahori and sold behind the counter in the Hollywood circles, not a Bond movie.
TBH, the Brosnan Bonds were pretty crap, and the Dalton and Moore Bonds werent great either.
I LOVE Casino Royale, and I thing Craig makes a great Bond, but they need to make a couple more great Bonds in order to win back the title of best spy-thriller franchise.
I hate Greengrass and his damn shakey-cam bullshit, so I definately wont see it in the cinema... but the Bourne movies are pretty damn good.
I dont agree with Damon's assesment of the Bond franchise, but it's nice the Bourne movies offer an alternative view on the spy-action thriller genre...
But come on: Damon's Bourne or Craig's Bond? Craig's Bond wins it! Bond is COOL again.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...
B. Casino Royale was better than The Bourne Identity (the first two are on TV this week so I'll revisit the first and see the second for the first time)
Casino Royale was rubbish IMO, the action scenes were tedious and Craigs lines were so dry he was choking. And really, his best feature is that he isn't Clive Owen.
I just watched The Bourne Identity which was better in terms of action and Franka Potente (serious++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++) but still worse than most Bond films and it had the fatal combination of Damon and Owen....
