Tom please translate! :) . LOL you bother to put the last sentence in English.

Does the HKL have dubtitles and translate the songs?
Chow Gam Kong wrote:kv look way better than this screenshot... Image :D
What else do I have to go on? It's those pics or nothing. Besides for me it's a mute point as the HKV has no English subs.

It could be a HD DVD for all the good it would be to me.

p.s - That wanker avator is tops :D

Tom please translate !
Right, Right. But you should know that I wrote my post before you asked to write in english. :D

So:

T'es sûr ?
You sure ?

Regarde bien les captures:
Look carefully at the caps:
Le HKL est en 1:778 (16/9 si tu préfères).
The HKL is framed at 1:778 (16/9 if you prefer).
Le HK Vidéo est bien en 1:66 (il a des bandes noires sur les côtés mais pas en haut ni en bas).
The HK Vidéo IS framed at 1:66 (it has black bars on the sides but not at the top nor at the bottom).

EDIT: après vérification, tu as raison. Le Mégastar (qu'on peut considérer comme l'édition de référence) est en 1:85.
EDIT: I checked, and you're right. The Megastar (which can be regarded as the reference edition) is framed at 1:85.
Le HKL et le HK Vidéo ont tous les deux les bords coupés.
Both HKL and HK Vidéo are cropped.
Le HK Vidéo s'en sort un peu mieux puisque le haut et le bas sont moins coupés que sur le HKL.
The HK Vidéo is a little better since the top and bottom aren't as cropped as the HKL.

http://www.cinemasie.com/fiche/video/50 ... aison.html

N'empêche, ni HKL ni HKV ne présentent ce film dans son ratio d'origine.
Still, none of them have the movie in its original aspect ratio.

What a pity...
Quel dommage...
:D

-------------------
Does the HKL have dubtitles and translate the songs?
I'd say that 50% of the HKL subs are dubtitles in Mr Vampire.
+The ghost's song isn't translated.
+The Coffee-Coke joke is all wrong.
+The word that is branded on Billy Lau's chest is definately not "Cutie".

Thanks.

I used a translator but your English is better than one of those 8) .

"Grim" or "Beer" are you interested in any of these your French is good right?

p.s - Not wanting to be pedantic (okay I do :D ) I said earlier please post in English as well (if you wish to post in non-English). I have no problem Bulleteers posting in whatever language they like as long as they retype it in English that way everyone understands.

The Tsui Hark Boxset announced on page 3 of this thread (The Lovers + Love in a time of twilight) has been pushed back.

No definitive release date has been announced.

First it was HKL with Wheels on Meals, and now this...
I'm beginning to think that HK Vidéo = Hong-Kong Legends.

Regarding the HK Video titles, I noticed that on Amazon.fr they are listed as being in both widescreen and full screen. Are they double sided discs?

It's more likely they are full screen compatible (if you set your DVD player accordingly). A popular feature unused outside of France.

Nope, they are Widescreen but also Pan-Scan compatible.
I've never tried this Pan-Scan feature, though.

We don't have many of those double-sided discs with Widescreen on one side and Full Screen on the other in France.

Mainly because we don't like cropping. :D

It's more likely France is the only country I know of that utilises the P&S feature of ALL DVD players.

Where as they can convert a WS DVD down to P&S, of course not as good as a proper P&S DVD hence why I guess it's not used to often. It works really well on the French ITMFL DVD but when you do so the subs no longer appear (at all) :(

Making it useless. Just change your DVD player settings to 4:3 and hey presto it's no longer WS nor are there black bars. It seems to be really popular in France, loads of DVDs can do it.

My Mum has a 14" 4:3 TV so WS films look tiny on it. I therefore prefer P&S on her set.

p.s - Who likes cropping show off? :D It's no different in the UK I can count the number of cropped 4:3 DVDs on one hand.

ASIAN STAR RELEASE SCHEDULE UPDATE:

1 month ago I wrote a post about the third wave of ASIAN STAR titles but the list wasn't definitive.

Now it is definitive.

* BTW These dvds SHOULD feature REMOVABLE french subs *

On September 14h:
-Tsui Hark's Seven Swords (Theatrical Release).

-Breaking News (DVD).
-Happiness of Katakuris (Takashi Miike).
-Quiet Family (Korea 1998).
-Shiri (Korea 1999). 8)
-Clementine (Korea 2004).
-You shoot I shoot (HK 2001).
-Ab-Normal Beauty (HK 2004).
-Chaos (Japan 1999).
-Leave Me Alone (HK 2004).
-Spiral (Japan 1998).
-Jiang Hu Triad Zone (HK 2000).
-Attack the gas station (Korea 1999). :D
p.s - Who likes cropping show off?
Americans love Pan and Scan AFAIK. In the US I don't think you could count the number of cropped 4/3 DVDs on one hand (unless you were born in Chernobyl :D )
I'm generalizing of course. I'm not saying that ALL americans love Pan and Scan.

Is it ?
It just makes sense to me that somebody exposed to radiations might have more fingers than the average human. :alien:

I'm beginning to think that typical french humor is incompatible with british humor.

Sorry 'bout that. Must be a cultural thing.

P&S in America is no different from most other places. It's what people are used to.

Most people in the UK (and I'm guessing France) own 4:3 TV sets. If they buy a new one then it's very often WS but that doesn't mean people have a clue what WS really means. They don't appreciate the extra detail or have a clue why WS is better.

When I was last in Thailand 3 years ago I didn't see ONE WS TV for sale. I was really surprised. They had the latest technologies, some very good TVs but everyone was 4:3.

The fact is most people simply don't care.

Nah it's more like I just didn't find it funny. I'm not usually a big fan of black humour.

In my experience European humour is usually similar (German humour is an odd one though). It's most American humour I don't get.

Down here in R4 land, the P&S DVDs can be counted on one hand as well. Unless you count shitty budget releases by tiny independent labels - especially public domain movies like Night of the Living Dead.

America's Funniest Home Videos comes to mind. I never understood what was so funny about footage of guys falling over, accompanied by awful sound effects and shitty voiceovers.

Yes. Bad example.
Here's a good one. Highlander 2 TC - Muddy VHS-sourced P&S transfer. Haven't seen it, but wouldn't mind watching just to see how awful it is.

UPDATE:

Here's a review of the upcoming Asian Star release of Legend of Zu:

http://www.dvdrama.com/rw_fiche-5245-0-legend-of-zu.php

You don't need to be a native french speaker to notice that this dvd is a major Asian Star f*ck-up.

Color filters removed, low-bitrate, no DTS, same extras as the Chinastar disc.
The only good thing about it is the removable french subs which provide a better translation than the Chinastar.

First it was Flying Dagger, then Man Called Hero, and now Legend of Zu.
The list of victims is increasing.

-Gozu by Takashi Miike
-Gojoe by Ishii Sogo

I don't like that cover art, I don't like that image in the first place and their manipulation of it makes it look rather ridiculous. I am interested in the three Ki-duk releases though. Samaria and 3-Iron are my favs and I've not seen "The Coastguard" yet.

UPDATE:

CTV (Columbia Tristar Video) will release Wong Kar-Wai's As Tears go By on August 18th.

Image

Approx. 90 minutes.
1.85 anamorphic picture.
French subs (don't know whether they will be removable or not).
Cantonese Mono soundtrack. 8)

I was going to wait for the Megastar Gold Collection, but I'll go for this one instead.
