A useless fact for you: I once received an e-mail from Katie Melua's Uncle saying she was proud to be Georgian, seriously I did. I bet she'd have a beef being quoted as British.
My ass, she has an off-key moaning voice that sounds like a cat dying; especially when she hits the highs.

Shit voices never stopped good songwriters though (which is clearly where Melua's actual talent lies). The "influential era" Bob Dylan sounds likes he's slowly being bled out during a funeral procession. A different sounding Dylan emerged with "Nashville Skyline", near unrecognisable, he actually sounded good. I prefer old Mr nasual death voice though.

She's beautiful, but her songs are kinda dirgy. Her voice doesn't offend me, unlike many others, which is something. I'm not saying I HATE every British act, but there's nothing that gets me excited right now. Depeche Mode? Have they done anything in twenty years? Did I miss a comeback?

Her singles, yes; album exclusive other stuff, no not really. Her voice ruins it for me though.

I wouldn't call Melua's sound dirgy, it's just her style. Downbeat.

Music needs a certain energy which she doesn't seem to have (and yeah I'm going by her singles).

I don't DISlike her. But I wouldn't buy an album.

Katie is indeed very pretty :) And when she first appeared she sure made a change from crap boy/girlbands. Not sure if I like her voice.. its good for what it is though.

It has oddles of energy IMO, sure it's not always upbeat and poppy though. Maybe the Venga Boys or Aqua are more up your street Mark?

I liked Katie's version of "Moon River", it put me in mind of the crooning Audrey Hepburn version from the film :)

Venga Boys?

I know of Aqua - Barbie Girl, etc. Scandanavian bubble-gum pop. What's that to do with this thread?

Back on topic: K.T Tunstall is good. I'm not just saying that because she's Scots before Brad jumps in with more racist ranting.

I'd love to hear Katie Melua do a Bond song, as she kinda has that kind of classic high voice which could be good for a classic old Bond song.

I dont mind Katie btw. But I do feel that fter 4-5 songs, I need to hear something else... I wouldnt be able to hear her songs all day long.

Norah Jones would also be a good choice for a classic Bond song.

You said Katie's singing had no energy ;)

She is good. I wouldn't say she's excellent though, but it is nice to hear a real singer with real songs though.

I said her music had no energy; that's not the same thing.

What's the betting she stumbles with the 'difficult second album' syndrome though...?

That's semantics, her singing is linked to the music she sings.

I'd say so, it affects so many artists. It's incredibly hard to sound fresh when your sound is already well know.
