Coming to America: 3.5/5

Blu-ray:
I was surprised that it looked very clean with zero dirt and limited noise w/out noise reduction artefacts. Very good transfer.

Perfume: Story of a Murderer - 2.5/5
I don't know whether to commend Tykwer or damn him for his perfect emulation of Tim Burton. The lyrical fairy tale quality, even the Danny Elfman-esque music... a flawless replication.

April Story – 5/5
Shunji Iwai’s best movie runs only 67 minutes and ends where most movies begin. Appart from a few scenes in the middle the movie is pure perfection. The dream like atmosphere is amazing and there’s not a single scene that feels rushed. The main star Takako Matsu is phenomenal. She’s real and extremely charming at the same time, yet managing to avoid all overacting and underlining. One of the best movies in the world.

hey,

Gong Tau An Oriental Black Magic 3/5

Herman Yau's latest warrants a look but you'll have to sit through some poor scripting that takes the drama of the film super serious. Yau hasn't got the actors to pull that off and the CG combined with physical gore is laughable at times. As the flick goes by, that excess is better combined and it contains enough fun, depraved nastiness. But if YOU or your friends expected a trip back to the old days, think again.

Yau knows this ain't a return trip to 1996 and Ebola Syndrome style of filmmaking. He gets funding for any kind of flick he wants it seems (even a ninja movie!) so this is just his desire this time around, to provide a black magic movie and that's not a bad thing. Having said that, Hh's matured a bit, getting better mileage out of his dramas nowadays.

Nope never heard of them :) but after reading some of their reviews, a few of their reviewers do go into nice detail and know their shit. Some of the reviews are so short that really it seems to depend on which reviewer does what dvd, as some to me are skimming the surface and feel pretty lacking compared to others on the same site.

Still its amazing how much peoples opinions vary as some of them HD dvds they say look great, others have said look poor. In the ends thats the problem, its someone opinion. Not fact :(

I just got very, very confused by accidentally reading the two reviews together.

hey,

Asian Connection (Encore viewing) 4/5

A standard buddy cop flick with an air of freshness and professionalism to it. Danny Lee and Michael Chow are a fine, sometime funny duo who's forced to go Taiwan to work after messing up in HK. Nothing out of the ordinary happens here but the realistic use of synch sound (meaning Cantonese switches to Mandarin when the Taiwan segment hits) and compelling actors makes this one a winner.

Mentions of the difference of working habits between the two sides gets highlighted in a comic way but there's serious sides to it that is injected well by directors David Lam and Yuen Tak, creating the compelling characters in the process. Danny Lee especially shines in his scenes with the grouchy Ma played by Chan Chung-Yung.

City of Violence

Ok-ish movie, but it wasnt anything special. Some nice choreography and moves, which was sadly hindered by some mediocre cinematography, and the story and the characters just didnt interest me much. It was all a bit too thin, story-wise... too exaggerated...

The scene where the murderer went into the policestation to kill the green haired dude, reminded me a lil bit of the killer in SPL...

Anywa, I give it a 3 outta 5. It seems unlikely that I will feel the need to watch it again someday soon...

Uchiage hanabi, shita kara Miruka? Yoko kara Miruka? – 4/5
Shunji Iwai’s two way movie is divined into two 25 minute halves. The first half is the lesser of the two, concentrating on two boys and bunch of their friends. The acting by the young stars isn’t always top notch but the energy and pureness makes up for it. The second half is very, very good. It shows an alternate course of events where one of the previous main characters becomes a supporting character and a previous supporting character becomes the second main star. This half is much more intimate and features an excellent performance by Megumi Okina.

Picnic – 4,5/5
A bit pretentious at times but so extremely beautifully shot that it doesn’t really matter. The music by Remedios is amazing, and combined with the visual brilliancy it creates some of the most breath taking scenes in recent memory (the shots Chara running next to the industrial site being a good example). Asano and Chara both fare well but the third main actor Koichi Hashizume's been given some of the film’s few less impressive scenes. The storyline is simple but quite brilliant.

Harry Potter & The Order Of Te Phoenix 4/5

I liked the film, but it also reminded me why I prefer seeing films first before reading the books. All through the film I was thinking, "they've changed that", "this was different in the book" sort of thing, so I don't htink I enjoyed the film as much as I could have.

Some changes I don't mind taking place, like ommitting some story lines which are good for the book but would be clutter in the film, but other small changes that they make that wouldn't have increased the running time much had they left the same as the book just annoy me. Why change it to Cho Chang that gave up the DA? Keeping it as it was in the book would have been fine and not made the film more confusing. Other little things like that annoyed me...

So now I just have to decided, read the last book now or wait till I've seen the film in 3 or so years time?

I think they changed that bit to save a huge chunk of time. But I didnt like the way Cho and Harry's relationship was changed. There was no rowing, or typical teen angst or anger. Harry's gradual descent into anger and moodiness in the book isnt shown either.

The Simpsons Movie - 4.25/5

Hilarious :D Really enjoyed it, it had me laughing out loud in places, there are many great scenes. The Itchy and Scratchy opening sequence is brilliant, I loved the bit with the eskimo spirit guide, Bart's nude skateboarding gag got some of the biggest laughs in the cinema, and Spider-Pig rocks! They even made a song!

However I felt that the story arc where Lisa gets a boyfriend was the weakest part of the film, and not that funny. This may be due to my dislike of Lisa episodes, but it didnt really fit well with the story.

It's interesting to note that many of the funniest scenes for me anyway, seemed to recall classic Simpsons moments from seasons past.

Really liked it! Will hopefully see it again/buy DVD :D

None of those are spoilers, Grim. And I haven't seen the movie yet.

I keep hearing critics say that although the movie is very funny The Simpsons has lost its "edge". Sounds more like the recent episodes than the earlier ones.

What do you think?

I think its bollcocks, created by a talentless person who couldnt draw early on, never mind now. The asians do the drawing, he takes the credit. Aragant dick.

Quite a lot of the movie reminded me of the series Golden Age (1992-98 ) in some ways, possibly due to the many early writers working on it, IMO. It's certainly very funny, you'll enjoy it I'm sure! :)

hey,

looking at the writing credits of the Simpsons Movie, it seems they gathered up the best of the best 8even those not working there anymore) and got together a bunch of fun gags. It works.

It is a long episode of the series indeed, not clever in an earth shattering way but gets its points across. Very laugh out loud funny and stupid at often times. Itchy/Hillary -07. ;) Be sure to stay for the entire ending crawl.

Agree it felt like a long episode of the series.
I loved the 'Rock and a hard place' gag and the way the ball stops.. then starts again :)
The part where Homer watches the VCR of Marge saying she taped over the wedding video, with the Close To You montage is quite touching and sad. :(
The story is pretty thin (it comes from the Homer Screws Up and Marge Nearly Leaves Him school of plot devices) but it doesnt matter that much :)

I can't imagine it to be as breathtaking without Forest Whitaker. He brings this film to life.

Pan’s Labyrinth - 3/5
I've listened to the hype again :(, It was a good movie, but not as everyone made it out to be. I really liked the fairy tale part, and the movie was pretty brutal in some parts - Ouch on the nose. The special effects was good, the ending was sad, but overall it made me feel a bit empty, I kinda was expecting more, especially from seeing the trailers as well as people i speak to saying it is soo great. I think I need to rewatch it again.

TMNT: 2007 - 3.5/5
Ahh the turtles, this was a good film, nice to see Mako being the voice for Splinter, may he rest in peace. I liked the story, but the ending I felt was rush. I did like the Leo vs Raphel fight, especially when Raph goes back to Splinter a bit heartbroken and what Splinter says to him. I would prob get this on DVD, and would love to see Shredder come back in the sequel

Transformer - 4/5
Awesome, I loved this movie... Err up until how Megatron dies!!! - Why did they do it this way and why did they have to!. Nice to see Frank Cullen voice again as Prime, and also Megatron saying "Prime!!!". The special effects was brilliant, and this movie is the movie you have to see in the cinema. Def will get this on DVD

Sounds like you're getting Peter Cullen and Frank Welker confused.
