Codecs! I need codecs! give me codecs!

Post by Yi-Long »

I need some help. Recently re-installed my PC, but now I need codecs to play my media files...

I tried and installed the Nimo codec pack, but files were still shit after that, all blocky and crap etc... so does anyone know what codecs I DO need to install to get every working again!?

Thanks in advance

That depends on what types of files you're trying to open?

Personally I use the K-Lite Codec pack instead of Nimo but they look to really be the same:

I never use any pack because they are huge and installs lots of crap I don't need. I use Media Player Classic (which features a lot of built in decoding options), the AC3 filter, and either FFDShow or just the plain Xvid codec (1.1). You'll get it all from Doom9's site at, yup, http://www.doom9.org.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

True but you never know when you'll need that codec. Personally I use codec packs but only install the ones I use regularly.

With K-Lite at least you can choose what to install.

I have trouble even with K Lite, loads still wont work and no idea how to ever get them working, its a minefield I find, far too many different ways to play the same old shit when there should only be a a few ways, they should not make it so hard.

Agreed.

I use "GSpot" which tells me what codec I need for a video/audio file. I can then go and download it.

Thanks guys. I used Gojenses site to download the xvid and divx codecs and it seems to be working now... :)
What's G-spot? a media player?

No a program that merely tells you what codec you need to be able to play a video/audio file in a media player:

Along with divx and xvid you might also consider downloading codecs for ogg vorbis (.ogg and .ogm) file types. There are quite a few quality movies out there that use this format.
