Compression artefacts are visible on both DVD transfers.
While it is slightly more detailed, the Japanese DVD has more vertical edge-enhancement (the french DVD only has horizontal EE).
The BD isn't as sharp as I was hoping it would be.
It sure is better than the DVDs, but there's none of that HD "3D" feel.
Thanks for the JP caps, Lourdes.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Even without the consideration of EngSubs I'd get the French DVD.
It's unfortunate that they only went with a single layer MPEG2 transfer. Anime can look amazing in HD but we've still yet to see a good looking release. In action on a large display the Paprika BD blows the DVD away but there's just so much wasted potential.
The French BD is supposed to have EngSubs + Other subs for all the extra features and commentary and is region free. Wonder if the now delayed super-duper French DVD release will have everything subtitled as well.
I just want to get a look at the BD to confirm it's the same transfer or better. I'll hold off my Paprika buying till all the releases are out. Japanese BD + softsubs on my HTPC for now.
Blue Ray disc is HD in name only, there is barely any difference between it and the the feckin DVDs! French DVD is a touch sharper, prolly down to PAL.

Mine is a 2-discer with plenty of extras AND english subs on the film.

As I've said, the french DVD has english subs.
The french BD probably does as well.

1) I can't get through Sony's copy protection... and using powerdvd would be useless if you guys have used the "Lourdes method".
2) It's probably a R2FR port, although the audio options are different.

Subs in a zillion languages
Four trailers: (Tekkonkinkreet, Cowboy Bebop, Tokyo Godfathers, Memories)
