The reasons to buy a PS3... or 360.

Post by Yi-Long »

I'm just curious as to what console looks the most interesting and promising for the future. I know all about Blu-Ray and Xbox Live and the controllers etc. One console has the next-gen dvd built in, the other does online gaming better, etc etc.

But just from software perspective, which console looks better for YOU, and why? Cause in the end, it's the games that will determine the machine.
Each machine has a few exclusives, and some games will look better on one machine, and other will look better on the other.

For me:

Reasons to buy a PS3:

- Ninja Gaiden Sigma: Exclusive for PS3, the original was one of the best games on Xbox. It looks absolutely stunning, and if they havent fucked it up, gameplay-wise, this is an absolute must-buy.
http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=3239

- LittleBigPlanet: I cant really describe what the game is all about, as I'm not completely sure myself yet... but it seems you can make and adjust everything in it: characters, levels, etc ... and share it with the world.
It just looks amazing, design- and physicswise. The kind of game I just know my girl and (future) kids would love, and I would probably love it as well...
http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=4491

- Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Should be a must-buy for either system, but supposedly better on PS3, and with extra content.

- Metal Gear Solid 4: Trailers look stunning, and is just a game in a series that has a big reputation and usually scores high. Should be a must-buy.

- Pro Evo Soccer 7: I'm sure those crazy japanese will make sure they'll make the PS3 version better then the 360 version...

Reasons to buy a 360:

- Blue Dragon. Looks great. Just hope they wont fuck up by leaving out the japanese voices. If it doesnt have the japanese voice-acting I wont be interested.

- Gears of War: Seems like the most fun frag-fest available on console today. Should be a must-buy.

- Forza Motorsports 2: Forza 1 was great. Not flaweless though. Forza 2 looks like more of the same, which could be either good or bad. When they start with DLC within weeks/months after release, I probably wont bother.

Games that will make the choice easier

Half-Life 2 Orange Box, Pro Evo, GTA4, Devil May Cry 4, Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Battlefield Bad Company, Band of Brothers ... etc. These are games I'm interested in, and if one of the consoles get the majority of these in better quality then the competition, I'm most likely to go for the console that has the best version of these games.

Anything I forgot, or just didnt mention?
I know I didnt mention Halo 3 btw. I just dont care about that.

Both consoles are both still too expensive for my liking. Plus the 360 still have too bad a reputation to make me consider buying one. Plus we'll have to wait how Sony will keep competing with Xbox Live.

360 should have playback of both HD formats by the end of the year by the earliest.

360:-
Too Human Trilogy - From awesome developer Silicon Knights. A fully freeform RPG with Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden style combat that will be a truly innovative experience. You have 100% customisable character that you'll be able carry over from each game in the trilogy to the next, you can even take him online for FOUR PLAYER CO-OP! The setting is a scifi setting modelled after Norse mythology. A God being being defined by their access to cybernetic technology. The antagonists are technological life forms. Just watch the developer diary videos/read the developer blogs on IGN.

Mass Effect Trilogy - From legendary developer Bioware. A squad-based action RPG with an epic storyline. Shares a lot in common with Too Human actually (including the Unreal 3.0 engine). It looks to have the most dynamic conversation system ever in an RPG. Just watch the developer diary videos/read the developer blogs on IGN.

Bioshock - The spiritual successor to the cult horror RPG FPS System Shock 2. I don't much bout it sorry, it has received A LOT of hype though.

Ninja Gaiden 2 - Will be 360 exclusive. Nuff said.

Multi-platform:-
The Darkness - FPS from developer Starbreeze (responsible for the awesome Riddick game on Xbox/PC). Based on comic property of the same name. Looks incredible.

Assassin's Creed - Looks to be similar to Thief. From developer Ubisoft Montreal, responsible for some of the Splinter Cell series. I don't much bout it sorry, it has received A LOT of hype though.

The thing you have to remember about multi-platform console games this generation is that they'll be built for 360 and then ported and optimised for PS3. Another difference is that both consoles are very close together technologically with different strengths (360 has a much gruntier video card and far more video ram. PS3 has a far gruntier CPU, but it'll take good while for developers to master it.). There's is no massive gap between the systems like there have been in past generations. There'll be more and more multi-platform games this generation since games development is very expensive now, costing typically $80-100 million USD for blockbuster titles like each installment of Too Human and Mass Effect.

Sorry Yi just quickly, are you guessing or do you have any links/sources? Personally I'd be surprised if MS brought out a BD add-on any time remotely soon. If they did do people really want two add-ons.

Anyway back OT.

Yeah, what's this about it supporting both formats?

I too remember reading something about an upcoming Blu-Ray drive for the 360.
It's probably BS, though.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Don't worry about Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the PS3. Just wait for the proper sequel on the XBox 360. Thats what I'm doing anyway...
TH-42PX80 | DMP-BD50 (MR BD & DVD) | SA-XR55 | SB-TP20 | XBox 360 Slim 250GB | XBox (XBMC, 160GB) | Zotac XBMC HTPC | Gaming PC | 8TB Media Server

MS won't release a BRD drive unless HD-DVD goes belly up. There are NO plans (confirmed by MS) to produce a BluRay drive yet.

Here's a great reason to buy a PS3 though;

The PS3 collectors edition of STRANGLEHOLD, the Woo "authorized starring" Chow Yun Fat video game followup to Hard Boiled, will apparently include...

The Worlds First HD release of HARD BOILED!
http://kotaku.com/gaming/playstation-3/ ... 261127.php

I wasn't going to bother with that game as shooters aren't my thing... but now I will! :D Even at the extraordinary special-next-generation price of US$70!!

(Knowing my luck though it will look like crap and have an English dub only :D)
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

There used to be? You mean like how the Xbox was superior to the older PS2? (Which in my eyes it was not...)

Anyways... PS3 is "true" next-gen. I feel the 360 is more like a Xbox 1.5, and if you read up on Forza you'll realize that the 360 limited what they could do simply because the CPU was too weak. The CPU set in the PS3 is a beast! And will be able to run circles around any other console today. And I doubt the GPU will be a issue when they (the developers) learn how to really program that beast...

The question becomes, will the developers learn to harness the beast before Microsoft releases their next console? Which should be a lot cheaper to develop and produce than the "too-early-for-it's-own-good" PS3...

(Oh and don't write me off as a Sony Fanboy, the Xbox was my first console ever... and I only got the PS2 for my kid (localized games, which surprisingly never made it to the xbox even when the game was released on both platforms...))
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I didnt say anyone deleted them :) they just went, it was a few simple comments like Multiregion basically. Thats all I want, shame there no sign at all of it ever coming. I guess HD DVD is the way for now, but still barley any titles coming out on that format. Cannot win either way :(

But hey I want a player soon, so they better pull thrie fingers out and make a quality machine thats cheap and plays both formats! £300, if it goes up to £400 I probibly wont as I spent way to much on DVD players over the years, the one I have now cost £550 quid, the one before that £600, so not wanthing to pay big for a HD one as I know when I buy one they will tumble in price! grrrr

It's not really related but agreed it is really weird how no BD MR chip/hack has come out. I guess as there was only one DVD standard and DVD works on SD TVs their was more demand to give us that.

There's no way you'll get a Combo Player for £300 anytime remotely soon, no way this year at the earliest. Hell ONLY LG have one out and that's got issues (as you know). Only Samsung also have one coming out and that's not for a few months yet, plus I don't think you're a Samsung fan.

So what if they tumble in price, it's not like your product suddenly becomes obsolete.

p.s - I said imagined ;)

Couldn't be bothered starting a new thread, despite this news being only tangentially related, but hey, it can be considered a reason to buy a PS3. PS1 and PS2 games are to be upscaled to 1080p if you want 'em as well as as some other stuff. The fact that it plays older games is the main thing to consider.
Looking forward to see how good they look.

IF you get a non-European model that is, the European models lack the hardware chip so not all games will run on it.

We're talking about a handful of games that won't run, whereas on the 360 it's a handful of games that will run.
And then this update will run them in an attempt to make them look better on HD screens, so it's a bonus all round.

For anyone living in Europe there's no point in getting a Japanese or American PS3 for PS1/PS2 playback - unless your entire (or most of) collection consists of NTSC-J or NTSC games.

I think it's a bit early for the modders to get into the boxes yet. Remember that the first couple of years nobody sold factory produced region free DVD players. You had to mod them with chips... then came the secret remote codes, and now "Cheap-ass-food" and the like sell chinese players that play about anything you stuff in them...

If you want to be an early adopter you will need to live with certain disadvantages - like expensive equipment, no multi-region etc. For me it's not a great issue. I can import region 1 HD movies delivered at my door for the same price I can buy 1 region 2 HD movie locally (and that does not include travel and parking or the time taken to get there... 30-45 minutes of my life gone :D)

The PS3 isn't the ultimate BRD machine, but it may the best available for now. For one, it lacks analogue sound output, and there were some musings regarding it's ability to pass thru True-HD/DTS-Master sound over hdmi. But it will do for me for now...

If I buy an PS3, I'm going to wait until the price drops at an affordable price, the price currently is just too much. I have a feeling it will come down.

@ Slasher: Do you have a 360 at the moment?
And yeah, don't worry, the price always comes down :)

I used to have one, but when I broke down the cost, it actually worked out more expensive than the PS3. Anything you have to get separately with the 360 is already in the PS3. Wireless battery packs are separate to the pads you buy, the wireless adapter is separate (£60!) and obviously the HD-DVD drive is separate.
I ended up trading in my 360 and accessories and only had to pay a fiver for my PS3, so I was happy :D
Given that I was never hugely impressed with the original Xbox's games (I've said it before, and I'll say it again Halo and its sequel suck balls :D), it's not like there was a large number of games that needed to be played on the new machine. But when only one game (Star Wars: Episode III) of all the games I owned played on the 360, its days were numbered. Dead Rising, Pro Evo (which plays at nowhere near the same level as its PS2 counterpart due to the shitty pad) and Lost Planet were not enough to ensure its continued existence at my house :)
Oh, and the number of times I saw the bloody red light on the front of the 360... What is this, a computer? A console should never crash as much as the 360 does.

As far as games are concerned, there're are a couple that have me interested (in addition to those already mentioned) Lair (looks like Panzer Dragoon Orta, done by Factor 5) and Heavy Rain (done by Quantic Dream, the people behind Fahrenheit) look good. The latter has me most interested; I thoroughly enjoyed Fahrenheit and can't wait to see what their new game's gonna be like. It was actually after seeing the trailer for Heavy Rain that I decided to get rid of the 360 and trade it in.
First person shooters also stand a chance of being decent to play on a PS3 because, like the PS2, it can use a USB mouse and keyboard, so Half-Life 2 and so on should be fun.
And that's excluding the ol' favourites like Tekken, Final Fantasy and so on.

Hey Kurgan, Nah my brother got one, the lucky git got it for free at his work, they got him the premium pack one with free wireless adapter, but hasn't got the HD-DVD. I kinda liked Dead Rising. I have been impressed with Xbox, the original, I have it, and played through a couple of games, highlight of my experience with Xbox is Jade Empire/KOTOR 1 and 2, these games are simply excellent. Also the xbox version of GTA Trilogy is supposed to be the best. Also Ninja Gaiden is bloody hard, but very cool
I am a huge Resident Evil/Metal Gear fan, so this is why I still want to get a PS3, as I think they are exclusive to PS, but saying that Capcom and Konami may port it over to Xbox after a couple of years? Not sure about this though

Previous versions of Resident Evil haven't been ported, but I think 5 is on the cards. MGS 4 is a little harder to predict, as Substance (the 'extras' edition of the second game) was ported to Xbox, but Subsistence (the 'extras' edition of the third game) wasn't. But, given some of the content of the trailer for the game, and not to mention that Hideo Kojima intends using the SIXAXIS pad, I'd say it's less likely. Wouldn't rule it out, but it's not as likely.

My brother loves Ninja Gaiden, but they leave me a little cold. Onimusha and Devil May Cry are more than enough for me; I never even got round to finishing the third Onimusha game, which is a pity.
Maybe during the summer drought ;)

But forget all this PS3/360 talk. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is due out this year! I can't wait for that! ;)

RE5 has always been planned as a multiplatform title.

Wii's upcoming schedule still looks as dry as the Sahara to me. Metroid Prime 3 is what I'm interested in and that's probably been delayed to 2008. I'll buy a US console eventually. Alternatively Datel plans to kick out a Wii Freeloader. US game playback is essential IMO due to Ninty's shit support of the PAL region.

With a chip in the wii a PAL console plays about 80% of all NTSC games...
