Isn't it about time we stopped doing Eurovision?

Post by grim_tales »

Did you see the Making Your Mind Up Eurovision programme? Jesus Christ, what fools the public are  The song we have sent is atrocious IMO - it's by Steps tribute act (they might as well be) - Scooch (remember them?) and it's called Flying The Flag, with various arline samples - fucking awful number that put me in mind of the Fast Food Rockers track :x
It was camp pop (and not in a good way). The Justin Hawkins number was camp, cheesy disco (sounded a bit like "It Takes Two" crossed with Scissor Sisters to my ears), but I quite liked it.
Another one I liked was by a girl called Cyndi - I Give My Heart To You (?) - though some bars of music sounded like traditional songs - notably Scottish folk song Loch Lomond and You Raise Me Up - which in turn is based on Danny Boy.
Would of sent Hawkins and Brown (Beverlei Brown could certainly sing) or Cyndi IMO. We deserve to get 0 points with the crap we have sent :D

Britain puts in the most money alongside France and Germany just to be cheated by voting blocks from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.

The part when one of the guy says "Would you care to order some nuts, sir?" does make me laugh   I don't mind camp if its done well, but this is not even good camp. It's just shite :?

If it is such shite then change the channel or turn the TV off. Unglue yourself from that crap. If you really need to watch stuff that sounds like it's from the 80s then load up some decent synth-pop on Youtube. Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Devo and Talking Heads are particularly awesome.

Yeah well, serves you well for deciding that WE (as in OUTSIDE the EU) must have flat cucumbers and gravel in the kids sandpits... gravel mind you that is "safe" in Spain but freeze up and is harder than asphalt up here :D

(Besides, I doubt the people actually watching Eurovision here can block anything... we're a small country afteralll...)
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Started watching just as the last act was on (a hot rock chick from Moldovia). The block voting is a farce and the Serbian winner - a lesbian who looked like Lou Costello - was shite. The Ukrainian runner-up song (performed by Christopher Biggins in drag) is possibly the worst Eurocrap I've ever heard. I'm glad missed the first 100 mins or so. The BBC needs to pull the plug on this nonsense and stop wasting tax payers money -- or insist that the votes are made by an accountable panel of judges.

I thought it was quite an amusing night. It wouldn't be the same without the block voting. There's usually a country that comes out on top anyway, and isn't affected by the block voting.

I think the votes were made by a panel of judges before, until the mid-ninties or something?

There was one country I quite liked but can't remember which... :?

Ukraine's was dreadful though... apart from the happy ending.

Yeah Bisc - you're right, it was always a "jury" thet decided the vote up until recently, now its just decided by phone/text vote (?) I think, rendering the block voting even worse in some cases.
Our song was shite, we got what we deserved. Mind you. Ireland must be wondering too, after years of domination they did even worse than us :D
The French and Bulgarian entries sounded similar (I think it was Bulgaria anyway).
Didn't hear the winner.

Well... before we all complain about the eastern voting block, shouldnt we first look at what kind of shit we sent in!? Western Europe, from what I heard, had all atrociously bad songs (although Germany had a nice song, I HEARD).

I Holland there were also complaints about our singer not making it to the final 10, but TBH her song was just shite. A simple popsong of which you hear hundreds each year, from useless boy/girlbands...

I hope next year we'll just send our 'presentor',the dutch guy who reads the scores for us :D
1: he's tremendously funny, and 2, he's actually a pretty good singer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYbKVWMmWnU (not a great vocal performance by him, but the chick is great, and he's trying to mess her up... :D )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6Pb_vopGhw (serious song)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbCq4xz4364 (Him as Sinterklaas, dutch version of santa clause... it's not subtitled but he plays a character who's a bit of an 'unadjusted' guy, who got a job as sinterklaas, and has to visit a school...
It doesnt end well, shouting abuse and flipping of the kids)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFN-4BABF6w (paul has a singer, and a huge fan of that singer in his show. he kid wants to sing a song of his idol, but sings hugely out of key, so Paul steps in because it's way too bad... then goes on to repeatedly insult and lecture the kid. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1NIXSvncC8 (The kind of song he should perform at the Songfestival. Sadly just music and no clip)

I'd be ashamed aswell if I had sent Scooch :D (mind you I never did catch Norways contribution... so maybe I shouldn't be throwing stones...)

However, Sweden sent The Ark - which IMO is a very established band and they didn't fare well ... I missed the song unfortunately so I don't know if it was shite as well... However, I think it's pretty clear we see the gap between Eastern and Western Europe with regards to culture and music now... ... some are calling for a divided Eurovision, one for east and one for west - and at this point I must say that I'm not too far away from that though - if I actually were to care about it at all! :D

(And come on, countries with similar cultures has always voted on each other, like Turkey, Greece and so forth... only problem now is - Eastern Europe is acutally quite a bit "larger" than the rest of us...)
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

No one likes us  Whats changed in (say) 6-10 years? As recently as 5-6 years ago we finished a creditable 3rd in Eurovision.
Our songs lately have been piles o' shite, and there was Iraq (*cough*) which I would say was one of the reasons we got 0 points in 2003, but countries have ALWAYS voted for their friends.

The only way they can possibly hope to make the contest fair is if they replace the silly semi-finals scheme with a group elimination contest similar to the qualifying stages of the footie World Cup. (So basically the countries would be grouped according to region).

Does anyone in this country actually give a shit who wins Eurovision though? The U.K have infamously treated the competition as a semi-joke for years now - I only wish we'd send more outragous and flamboyant acts to the tournie and really have a laugh with it.

We should of sent Justin Hawkins this year but oh no.... I thought his song was cheese, but it was good cheese (if you see what I mean), you had Hawkins for showmanship and camp, and Beverlei Brown was a good singer :)

Or Chico from X factor should of gone :D

I agree with you about the semi finals, I'm not sure why they have them, they didnt used to. And why are countries that didnt even qualify allowed to vote? :?

Go back to the system of just having "juries" I say.

We should send acts who are currently popular and see how they do. A few years ago TATU almost won (came 3rd) with the superb Ne Ver.

Well... it has to do with IMMIGRANTS. Germany and Holland have large populations of Turks, so Turkey will always get alot fo points form Holland and Germany, as the Turkish community in these countries will vote for them. Also, we vote for Belgiums and belgiums for us.

If you wanna win more points, you have to emigrate your people to other european countries, and then make them vote for you :D

In the end though, who fucking cares? Is there anyone taking it all seriously? Even the charts are a complete joke nowadays.
