Isn't the movie itself window-boxed ?
Have you tried playing it on your PC to check ?

hey,

and dvdtalk really slammed both the film and Crash for not presenting the film in super digital remastered glory, like they promise on the box. Thing is, there's a press release promising that they've done what they can considering the rarity of this and other flicks in this format.

Argh  ! Was hoping to jump on you for them being out of sync with the 'other version' 8) .

Anyway, why the hell is it windowboxed  ?

Problems

For people that don't have overscan, it's a problem - all that wasted resolution.

Shame the back cover was misleading (no trailer) and the menus weren't anamorphic.

Yeah, I think it's a stock back they use. At the time when they were putting it together, they may have thought they had it. I've got the trailer, which is pretty rare, but I was hoping for a better copy. That said, I was happy to have the film.

As for window boxing, I don't think I've ever seen it on DVDs except in the case of full screen presentations.

hey,

The Japanese dvd of red Sorghum (Zhang Yimou) featured windowboxing. Can't say it bothered me.

Those subs look hard to read. I'd still like to see the film though. I guess we're lucky to have it on DVD, if its a rare film. :)

hey,

if you think those subs are unreadable, you ain't seen nothing, grim. It's something you get used to when viewing a particular film. Same will surely be true for The sword.

LOL! You're not kidding...

I have some films that have subs at least two times smaller than those! You have to set right up on the TV to read them!

Bad subs are a curse on HK cinema - even some new DVD subs seem done by a chipmunk with brain desease

True. I agree about the font and size issues. It makes some of these films a bit of a pain to follow

Having watched the DVD myself, I think it's a good presentation. Curiously, the CRT set I watched it on had trouble with the NTSC pulldown on this one - everything looked a bit slow and jerky whenever the fast action came on - but it looked fine on my PC

Does anyone know what limitation interlaced NTSC can cause with traditional TVs?

You get jerky playback if your TV is forced into PAL mode. Switch the TV System mode to Auto or NTSC.

I think this TV just does Auto. My DVD player converts interlaced material into progressive - so no ghosting compared to my old player. Maybe there's a communication error between the disc, the player and the TV

I liked it. The subs are a real pain but the film is well made enough to get by on the strenght of its direction and feel. Jimmy is good in it too

hey,

for me, was a struggle to read maybe 2-3 sentences in the film, that was it and it's indeed not the subs that tell the whole story.
