Note, according to WHO France has a 13.3% alcohol dependency among it's adult male population (4.1 among females) while the UK as 7.5% (2.1 for females).

I'll give numbers as X/Y now with X being % among males, and Y % among females.

The adult numbers of heavy episodic drinkers are; France 27.9/9.7, UK 24/9.

For youths the numbers of heavy episodic drinkers are; France - 16/7, UK - 33/27. Norway clocks in at 17/14.

Anyhoo, the numbers don't really say that much as there's no real worldwide stats on this... like, the numbers for the UK are based on different measurements than that of those in France. Read the extract from the report for all the details...

As usual with statistics, you can make them say whatever you want :D
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Mark didnt say "its wrong" like Romero did, he said its fine on a special occasion or with a meal (which I agree with).

Case proven, point made, Brad moves on :D

It's the minority not majority who make up the headlines you fool, those who can't handle the alcohol they're putting into their bodies. It's those people the government seems incapable of controlling, controlling the masses when the problem effects the few is madness.

My parents allowed me to have a sip of wine at dinner time. I see no harm in that.

It's got naff all to do with alcohol like gun crime has not naff all to do with guns (although guns arguably kill so heavier controls need to be in place). It's about a society's views on such subjects. Alcohol in the UK by most is considered the be all and end all of a fun time. It's that that needs to change not banning alcohol to those who use it responsibly.

It's even got naff all to do with how much you drink, it's how responsible you are afterwards that's important. If you get pissed then stagger how quietly so what.

I take offence to being charged more through taxes to buy a pint. Why I should I? I am a responsible drinker, but then I know when I've had enough.

Obviously alcohol kills thousands of people each year, and causes millions of people pain. That doesn't mean it should be taken away from the masses who cause zero trouble.

FYI the UK is certainly not the only country with a drink problem. Ireland does, Holland does, it tends to be the colder countries funnily enough.

He he true.

Everything is extremes with Romero, he's not capable of considering most people are capable of drinking responsibly.

Most of us don't live in Hellville that you seem to.

You've stated before the area you live in is full of violence, drugs, gangs and drinking. I suggest you move out if it's as bad as you claim it to be.
romerojpg wrote:Seriously if you dont know what getting "drunk" is about, dont say its good for you. As most normal people do not drink a little thats for sure (well maybe in France).

Its not doing your brain good when you get drunk you know it casuses brain damage, or your liver, heart, mental health or cancer.
As per usual Romero you're twist what people say to suit your own arguments. I suggest you re-read what Tom actually said as he sure as hell didn't say getting drunk was good.

Coming from the man who thinks all of society is drunk 24/7 and is out to get him that means a lot :D

Brad, as you say most people are capable of drinking responsibly, this law (?) may just hit the responsible people more.
Is it the Governments fault if some people don't exercise self control? Err no :?

@Romero+Brad:
I haven't said anything about getting drunk.

Alcohol is good for your health. This is why I think it's safe to give alcohol to children.

All good things can however become very bad when taken in big quantities.
That includes alcohol, sex, exercise, money, drugs, and pretty much everything else.
But that's irrelevant. This topic is about alcohol, not alcoholics.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

When i go out i can sink 10-15 pints easy, i'm merry but not legless. i can take booze or leave it, i haven't had a drink for over a month now and i rarely drink at home. my 19 year old daughter has a drink when she goes clubbing, my 17 year old son hates the stuff and doesn't touch a drop.

Yeah, and the Nazis probably employed a similar logic to justify the Holocaust.

I'm positive alcohol is GOOD for your health.
So where's your source then?

The visible effects of young binge drinking presumably varies depending on where you live.

So to Romero it may be very visible but not to others. Doesn't mean either of you are wrong you just see different things and thus have different perspectives.

It's always going to be worse in the kind of area where I live than in a more placid rural setting for example.

I just think its an odd thing people getting drunk, always has been for me for some reason.

I dont live in a hell hole thats for sure, every towns much the same. I just hear about a lot of crap and see a lot of it, as I am one paranoid muther funster, always keeping one eye one people and one eye on the people I am with. I just hate trouble, and alcohol causes a lot of it when I am out and about as hey some people are stupiod and dont know when to stop.

Children are thick in the UK it seems, I used to stand back and think you lot are crazy when my feiends and school peeps used to go out every weekend and buy 10 big bottles of extra cheap massive bottle cider and drink till they passed out and puked, that just isnt normal for me, its thick as pigshit.

Seems still to be that way now as I use the bus every day and hear the little kids talking about it, they still get pissed out of their brains.

Eva, are you just trolling this thread or are you really that stupid? The beneficial properties of moderate drinking has been studied, reported and talked about for years! And just in case you're too idle or illiterate to type in "benefical properties of alcohol" into google, here's a quote from wikipedia:
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that there is convincing evidence that "low to moderate alcohol intake" results in a decreased risk of coronary heart disease. However, the WHO cautions that "other cardiovascular and health risks associated with alcohol do not favour a general recommendation for its use.

Also it has been suggested that moderate consumption of alcohol can reduce the risk of dementia, facilitate memory and learning, and even improve IQ scores. Moderate drinkers tend to have better health and live longer than those who abstain from alcohol or are heavy drinkers, but this average difference is largely explained by the fact that a large fraction of abstainers are ex-alcoholics or those who have health problems or take drugs that preclude the use of alcohol, and has far less relevance to those who abstain for other reasons
Next time you decide to make an egregious post trying to be clever, make sure you double check your facts first, moron! :drunken:

And there's lots of links in my post that touch on the benefits of low to moderate consumption and the evils of drunkard binging. :D

That said, I just have to know what's up with you posting those maps Eva, they make no sense at all.

I don't agree with Tom that drugs are good for you :o (Well, small amounts then). By Tom's logic is smoking good for you?
Just making a general point, dont want to open up the smoking thing again :)

I just meant that things that can't hurt you in small quantities can become lethal if you abuse them.

A few cigarettes each week won't hurt you.
2 packs a day will kill you.

It's not "it's bad", it's "a lot of it is bad". :)

One thing I mentioned earlier isnt exactly coming out:)

Maybe SOME alcoholic drinks are good for you (Wine, and a few others I think) but the stuff we now drink in todays society are NOT good for you at all.

Not a chance in hell, most drinks people in the UK seem to drink now have so many bad things in the drink that they are seriously bad for your health (and esspecially your gut and teeth). So really Kids wont exactly be drinking the stuff thats good for you in moderation thats for sure, well in the UK they dont. Sickening Alcopops and added suger, acidic drinks, and vile mixing agenst are never ever going to be good for you ever. Few people will just drink a nice pint, or a glass of wine thats for sure.

It sickens me how the majority of cider in the UK contains the deadly artificial sweetener, Aspartame.

what about the majority of food that contains Aspartame Gasteropod. i mean thats just sickening people don't care what they eat as long as it tastes good it could be made of horse shit and they'd eat it...

incidentally Sainsbury's have recognized the problem and removed Aspartame from all their own products, they also took out artificial flavors and colors.

I'd rather have an alcopop than a pint.

It's not the drink it's the irresponsibility of the drinker.

Oh I know, I avoid any food which contains it, and warn my friends and family, although a lot of them don't care for some reason.

It's good to hear about Sainsbury's, I didn't know that.
