I loved HOFD and Hero. Great admirer of Yimou and look forward to seeing his other films.bradavon wrote:Well as I suspected you're all wrong. Like Hero & HOFD it was excellent.
I don't know why you guys bothered (that's a general statement) you didn't like HOFD so it's unlikely you'll like Yimou's post Hero way of film-making. I wouldn't bother.
Curse of the Golden Shower was just guff though. I thought I was watching a dodgy episode of neighbours on LSD.
This dude on imdb makes an interesting point...

That's a registered only post and I can't be arsed to sign up, should I? I know about Bugmenot but it rarely works nowadays.
Fair enough. As for CYF he's not an action actor gun mania aside or more to the point hasn't been for years. I had no problem with it but then I'm not as much a CYF fan as most of you are.
Gong Li's acting was as usual very good.
Oh and I thought it was better than Hero which I like (I've seen the TC and DC) but have always thought beauty aside it was always a bit overrated.
p.s - CYF facial hair looked naff

@Bradavon:
I like COTGF for the same reasons as you. Loved the plot, the acting and the action. But especially the plot.
Hero was great (altough it felt a bit empty at times).
House of Flying Daggers' plot was just about Zhang Ziyi and her boyfriend Kaneshiro running away from Andy Lau and his funny green helmet. Not much plot there.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

@ Romero

I thought the same. Although I'd say very good not great.tom2681 wrote:Hero was great (altough it felt a bit empty at times).
Yeah true I guess, not that I care at all. Simple plots can work very week. I am a bit of a sucker for a romance thoughtom2681 wrote:House of Flying Daggers' plot was just about Zhang Ziyi and her boyfriend Kaneshiro running away from Andy Lau and his funny green helmet. Not much plot there.

Black is not the best colour to be sneaking around in...
...not when everything is so...colourful, at least. Maybe if you dressed up as a happy rainbow unicorn it'd camouflage better against the background. But black? Black? Seriously?
I didn't get that...

As pretty as Hero and HOFD are, they lacked in the plot department, as many Chinese films do. Hero felt empty as other's have said.
HOFD was a major blunder. Having a simplistic plot is one thing, many great films have simple plots; but the 3rd act of HOFD was simply an appallingly written mess that sinks the entire film. The number of half-ass plot twists that had.
