lets be different now, and use this thread the way it was intended ;) :D

Payback Director Cut - 3.5 / 5
I liked this DC, but kinda prefer how it was when it came out. This one ends so quickly, which I didn't like. It is a bit more darker but not much. So Mel doesn't get his money, and is just left for death?. I do love the music and the whole beginning bit, so I would prob buy this

Protege - 4.5/5
Now this is a film!, absolutley brilliant. All about the ills of drugs. Andy Lau is great, but yes Daniel Wu steals this for me, he is excellent. There was some scenes which I had to look away, I can watch most gore movies and slasher stuff, but real life stuff like drugs and how it affects people just scare the hell out of me. Zhang Jingchu is lovely in this as well, her performance was great and the ending was really sad. Def going to buy this on dvd, a worthy purchase

I cant believe the love for Who Am I.
Horrible story. Horrible acting. Ridiculous villain. Only the last 30 minutes when the movie is in Holland, the action takes over which is pretty good. The first hour orso is just plain awfull.

I thought both Rush Hours were enjoyable.
Shanghai Noon was very boring but Shanghai Knights had a good pacing and was fun.
Gorgeous is a good movie with some nice action and good co-stars.
Mr Nice Guy and First Strike sucked
New Police Story sucked. Cartoonish dumbass 'villains'. Bad performance by Chan and he's trying to go back to his stunts from his good days, but fails.
Havent seen the other movies, or only parts of them... but I'm not interested in seeing any of them. Jackie is a has-been.

Tuxedo was appalling. Romero loves it, shows how bad it is.

Yi I agree with you re: NPS - OK-ish action in places but not good acting by Jackie at all (though I appreciate the attempt at humanising the character), stupid cardboard dumbass villains, no proper end fight. :?

Should be called PAYBACK- The Director's Re-cut as it's not how it WOULD have been in 1999 even if Helgeland had been allowed to finish to his satisfaction.

Yes, I'm cynical.

Would still be curious to see it though.

Gen X Cops 4-4.5/5

I really, really liked this film. Fast paced, good action, a plot that kept evolving. Yeah, there was the really annoying cop who was out to get the gen-x lot all the time, but almost every good HK film has a shit character in it. Sam Lee was, well a Sam Lee character too, but not as annoying as usual. Remembered liking it, but not this much! It is nice to be pleasantly surprised sometimes!

My Wife is a Gangster 3 (Korea - 2006): 4 / 5

Image

Solid entertainment. It's not gonna revolutionize the genre, but it's a solid entry in the action/comedy section.

I can't understand the title though, as there's no link whatsoever between the first two films and this one.
This one should have been called "Hsu Chi: badass triad boss".

There's a lot of good humour in this film, but most of it comes from Mandarin-Korean quiproquos. It's not bad, but it gets a bit tiresome after a while. Don't watch this movie for the fights, otherwise you'll probably fall asleep. There are only 3 or 4 of them, and they are rather short.

Image

On the acting side, Lee Beom-Su is spot on as always.
It's nice to see Ti Lung and Ken Lo too, but their acting seems forced and unnecessarily over-the-top.
As expected, the weak link here is Hsu Chi. She's supposed to look like a big mean triad boss, but she just looks either bored or constipated (maybe both) for most of the film.

Although I've gotta say she is surprisingly adequate in Won Jin's well-choregraphed fights, despite the obvious use of a stunt double who looks nothing like her.

Image

The editing is clumsy at times and the cinematography is a bit too classic for my taste, but the many laugh-out-loud moments more than make up for it.

Good film. Will buy the DVD.

Who Am I. You fail.

After Dark Horrorfest - Reincarnation - 3.95 / 5
This is a great j-horror film, its not scary, but a good watchable movie which I really enjoyed. It delivered the following which I love in a movie

1. Scary Puppet
2. Ghost Town
3. Zombies
4. Cute lead actress :)
5. Good Twist

It is a pretty good movie, at times it felt like Silent Hill with the ghost town, and had a good twist. This was written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. Another reason why I loved it, was the premise, that it was behind the scene of how a movie would start, from the beginning, with designing the sets. Good, haunting film I say

BTW I can't see a reason why this and Unrest previously are "considered to graphic or too disturbing for general audiences. ", it really isn't

Anyway now to watch the next After Dark Horrorfest

The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - 4.25/5

Excellent make-up and performance by Boris Karloff (billed simply as "Karloff") as the monster with a heart. He does a fantastic job as a tortured soul, who longs for friends, and even a mate/Bride (hence the title). It's not hard to see comparisons with say, Kong (King Kong) or the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Great movie IMO.

Tom. I hear MWFIAG3 is rather different from the previous 2 (I kind of liked these because there was minor drama). This right?

@Lourdes:
Yes, it's very different.

Parts 1 & 2 had a very strange yet pleasing atmosphere, no doubt due to the presence of amazing actress Shin Eun-Kyung.

Part 3 is lighter and more mainstream. It's kinda like Tokyo Raiders with the cinematography from Bittersweet Life (if you can imagine that  ).

There's more comedy, but it's less subtle.
There's roughly the same amount of action.
If it's the drama that bothers you, don't worry. There's only a little bit of it in the last 20 minutes (you know how korean films are...).
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

hey,

Night Caller 4/5

A fine homage to Dario Argento opens Phillip Chan's excellent and thoroughly underrated thriller. But Chan makes a movie of his own after that and even though it's in structure a regular cops hunt for the killer-flick, Chan invests the script with good (and quirky) characters, mxing light and dark effectively in the direction subequently. Hong Kong cinema have rarely put out something this sharp.

New Police Story 2/5 - again for the action, as the acting and plot is terrible. Jackie gives his worst actiing performance by "trying" to act (e.g. drunken scenes).

Who Am I = 4/5 - plot and acting is terrible, but at least everyone knows (and embraces it, unlike a certain other film). I don't care as it's just a fun movie to watch with great action - probably Jackie's last with the action and grand finale stunt he is known for.

Rush Hour = 3/5
Around the World = 2.5/5

The Myth = 2/5 - would have been more but the period stuff and final third ruins it.

Accidental Spy = 3/5
Shanghai Noon = 3/5
Gorgeous = 2/5
Rob-B-Hood = 2/5
Shanghai Knights = 2/5
Mr Nice Guy = 2/5

Rush Hour 2 = 4/5 - can't believe a lot of people don't like this. Better than the first.

Medallion = 1.5/5
Tuxedo = 1/5

Around the World in 80 Days: 2.5/5

Very hit and miss this film is, the script is very witty at times (mostly during the British segments) and the Chinese section is really good fun. Shame the same can't be said for the embarrasingly awful segments set in Turkey and India, and the U.S segment has been so blatantly truncated that I am absolutely astounded as to why they even bothered to leave it in!

Almost alll of Jackie's action sequences are rehashes of his work on Shangai Noon (which themselves were rehashes from his early 80's films) and he's played it all to death in U.S films already, so I can't help but wonder if the film would've been much more enjoyable had they just never bothered to cast Jackie in one of the leading roles and just kept the chop-socky and JC's role for the Chinese segment of the film. That way the scripwriters would've been free to keep the quirky tone and frothy style of the opening act and kept the runtime down closer to the 90min mark.

Oh and how many of the celebrity cameos were actuakly any good? Mark Addy was very funny, Sammo was great just for being Sammo; and Daniel Wu was ok, but he was doubled so much during the fight sequences that I dunno why they bothered given him an action role. Arnie was as entertaining as cancer, Macey Gray's role was so short I dunno why they bothered (same goes for Maggie Q). Schneider and Owen/Luke Wilson managed to raise a smile, and Cleese's cameo was nice and Pythonesque.

Truck Yaro: Tenka Gomen – 3/5
Part four. This being the sixth Truck Yaro film I see I’m slowly starting to run out of comments. This part is rather basic stuff, lots of drama and humour, not as wild as the next two films but still a lot of fun with a cast that’s starting to feel like a part of your family. There’s some good supporting characters although Sugawara’s opponent is a bit under used this time. It slighly irritates me that I can see there’s lots of cameos but I don’t know who most of the actors are. The ending is nice with some very beautiful images.

Borat - 4.5/5 (maybe 5/5)

Hilarious
I can't beleieve some of the things he got away with :o Or the views some people had. Eg the part when he went to the rodeo and said the things about Iraq :o Or the gun shop :o Some sections of America were still so bigoted./racist it was shocking.

Loads of top scenes :D Loved the part when he passed the lingerie store

The fact Borat will offend just about everyone, Christians, Jews, gays, even bears - is half the fun though, one of the deleted scenes in a supermarket is great.

What is this?

Disney spent millions on AROUND THE WORLD and still managed to make it look like it was all shot in Burbank. Why did they go on location? You can never tell as it's so badly shot and designed. Could be India, California.
