Nvidia PureVideo codec - help please

Post by EvaUnit02 »

I recently installed this and I have to say that DVD playback is much smoother than it was before.

There any way to use this of any other DirectVideo filters with PowerDVD?
Thanks.

No. Though as I understand it PowerDVD now support DXVA.

Cheers. I think I may uninstall PowerDVD, PureVideo+MPC seems much better.

@Lourdes:
I've heard that some people managed to use FFDShow with the latest version of PowerDVD.
If FFDShow works, then maybe PureVideo can work too.

Can't test it myself, though. I'm using DScaler+MPC.

The way ffdshow works with PowerDVD is by putting itself in the chain after the decoder so you can use filters.

Eva, make sure you're actually using DXVA and grab the VMR levels fix if you use it (which you should).

It's highly likely that my XP 32 installation already has DXVA, but I barely use it (my primary OS is XP x64).

That VMR fix is apparently not an issue with the latest ForceWare.

There just isn't much point in using PureVideo if it's not operating in DXVA mode.

I'm still using old eighty something drivers. Hate the new control panel and the associated issues it presents.

What's DXVA? PureVideo is an addon driver for your normal graphics drivers right?

Sorry your first question makes no sense, to me.

PureVideo is a DVD decoder. DXVA is DirectX Video Acceleration, lets you put some load onto the GPU from the CPU if the decoder supports it.

Thanks so it's a codec, is it better than PowerDVDs then? I'm guessing so.

Is DXVA part of DX9 and 10 then?

I think XP x64 might already have it. The XP 32 hotfix doesn't work.
Does this indicate anything?

Yes. You need a patch for WMP10, it's builtin to WMP11. Vista has DXVA2.0.

DXVA is a seperate API from DirectX.

Eva, what I mean is check the purevideo status during playback.

In MPC:

Now run THIS registry file.

Where you currently see "Software Mode" you should have "DirectX VA mode."

No such luck, looks like there's no DXVA for XP x86. :(

What I'm seeing in XP x64:-

Try THIS version of MPC (nice new one) and see what filters are in use whilst it's playing (Play > Filters). It could be something like ffdshow or the nVidia postprocessor interfering. If it is disable it or block it via the External Filter settings in MPC.

Is there any real point to using GPU acceleration these days anyway? Core 2 processors are so powerful afterall, and it's the norm to have 2GB memory minimum. I never get over 43% CPU usage with the 1080p the video that I've sampled.

DXVA miraculously works now under XP x64. I'd imagine it's because of NVTweak/NVTray (that unlocks the old Nvidia control panel, cause 1xx.xx Forceware forces you to use the craptacular new CP, but the old one is still buried in there). NVTweak unlocks all the hidden features of Forceware, such as the coolbits overclocking options.
