I meant no Tartan NTSC>PAL release is superior to any other release.

The R3K Boiling Point is an R2J port + subs.

The R1US of Dolls is better than the Canadian release. Interlaced but looks like an incorrectly flagged R2J port from the caps I've seen. The Artificial Eye release is rather good.

"Why is it odd? Australia is a PAL country and most of Asia isn't. "
PAL isn't odd, NTSC>PAL conversions are.

Thanks I didn't know it existed but do now and have found it. I'll add a warning to the Boiling Point + Sonatine DVDs saying there could be better versions out there. NTSC to PAL is one of those odd ones where it divides people: those who care and those who don't.

Interesting. I went with the Canadian DVD in the end as the US is only Stereo and a DVD-5. I am disappointed by the PQ on the Canadian DVD but would miss the 5.1 if I got the UK DVD. It's not wildly better but it is better.

It's pretty common practice though was my point.

Didn't realise the Canadian release had 5.1. Best release of Dolls is definitely the R2J but it's always been expensive. What extras does the Cad release have? The R2UK ones were disappointing in that the film was portrayed as being really shallow and Kitano seemed to be ordered about by the art director/

It's not common at all really. Only when it comes to anime series, oh and Tartan of course.

Edit: NTSC>PAL is those who have good equipment and those who don't. :)

bradavon wrote: The subs are burnt in for Azumi  . That goes against EE saying they'd be creating new removable sus with the same house style.

I also find EE don't even know about a DVDs spec. until it's nearer it's release date.
Sorry, the subs are not burnt in according to chris. You can check the thread here but you have to scroll down.

I saw Ong-Bak in theatres yesterday. Distributed by Madman/Eastern Eye. It was most definitely the Besson Cut, which automatically rules out the eventual R4 EE release as a viable option (unless the R2 PA release has the Besson Cut too).

BTW the French hip-hop score is truly fucking awful.

I do hope Premier Asia has gotten ahold of the original Thai Theatrical Cut.

Thanks Eva. That is annoying news.

Updates direct from the Madman/EE forums:

Twilight Samurai:

16:9 anamorphic pal transfer, Dolby 5.1, DTS 5.1
Storyboard Comparison
Theatrical Trailer
2 x Teaser Trailers

Well that's a complete waste of bloody time. Unless the PQ is much better than the Tartan I guess but considering the price difference I'll get the HK DVD instead. I can live without DTS in this case.

Ong-bak:

Just to give you some early info, Ong Bak DVD will be a our first 2-disc release with approx 3 hours of extras. P.S. It will be direct to retail release too, so you can buy straightaway!

It's great to see a 2 disc release but unless it's uncut I won't be bothering; I could handle it being cut (just considering the length of the cuts) but a new score also. I'll wait to hear confirmation before possibly adding it to the first post.

I wont buy it unless it's uncut. Don't care if they put 20 hours of extra's on it. Releasing the movie without the original score and having scenes ripped out, is disrespectfull to both the makers of the movie, and (more importantly) to me as a consumer.

Fucking useless bastards.

I have a feeling these wankers that like to cut up other people's movies, are just film-school failures/dropouts with a huge monkey on their back... that like to try a bit of editing on someone else's stuff...

There really is no excuse for cutting up a movie, let alone change the soundtrack...

Eastern Eye has seriously dropped on my respect-chart, and unless Premier Asia does the right thing which I doubt btw...., I'll be downloading and burning me an Ong-Bak bootleg (Already have the Thai original DVD, so already paid for the fucker...)

I still have respect with EE. I have been dissapointed with some EE titles including azumi, JSA but releasing a dvd with 2 disks is a positive and if they get enough polite feedback about Ong Bak DC maybe they might release this. Hopefully more film-pal transfers and getting SBS to translate and subtitle further dvds as well.

Some screencaps from DVD heaven Sonatine and Violent Cop.

Well... from the moment it became clear that EE had the rights to the movie, I and others have expressed our concern over the release and our explicit wish that we DONT want the fucked up version on their boards... and they've been pretty quiet about it, saying they dont exactly know yet what version they will release (which seems a bit weird to me as they hold the rights so they should know what version they have...)

It looks likely EE like many others are happy to ignore their customers and go with what they think is best.

That's overall Madman policy, and considering their market it's easy for them to do.

More EE news.
Contacted EE and recieved Info on Ong Bak.
This was the reply
The Ong Bak 2-disc set will contain both the Theatrical Version and the
original Thai DC.
Also asked some questions about NTSC-PAL transfers.

JSA - NTSC

Ju-on – both films are FILM-PAL

To Live – sorry, this is Madman Cinema so I don’t know the process employed for this one

Arahan - NTSC

Infernal Affairs – FILM-PAL

Hidden Fortress – NTSC

Musa - NTSC

Versus – FILM-PAL

Volcano High - NTSC

Bichunmoo - NTSC

Violent Cop – FILM-PAL

The Eye – FILM-PAL

Breaking News – FILM-PAL

Its good to see EE adding DC to Ong Bak.

Thanks Blade.

I'll add the NTSC info to the front page for each relevant title. I imagine JSA Tartan will also be an NTSC to PAL transfer. It's good to see some are Film to PAL transfers.

I wonder why most aren't though?

That doesn't fill me with a lot of hope:

1. They decided to leave Musa untouched when a cut version was available. I wonder why?
2. They tried to have both cuts with Volcano High and the result is a mess:

A: The DC is only in DD2.0
B: It freezes whenever the extra scenes are going to be added

3. Why bother?

4. Excuse me but the Thai cut is also the Theatrical Cut! It really pissed me off how EE labelled the Volcano High menus as "Original" (this was implied) and "Deleted/Extended footage". It should be labelled as "Thai Theatrical Cut" and "International Cut".

I dont care how they call it, as long as I will be able to see the original cut in the original language and with the original soundtrack, without any hiccup crap or having to press a certain button in the midst of a movie to access the scenes...

If they mess it up, I wont buy it. Simple. :)

That's all one needs. All I want is the original theatrical cut w/ original language DTS and literal translation English subs (no dubtitles). If they have to include the hacked up Besson cut w/ the fucking awful French hip-hop score, supply it via seamless branching in addition to the original cut. Extras are welcome, but not essential.

It puzzles me why the hell small independent distributors don't produce seamlessly branched discs. Surely the modern industry-standard DVD authoring suites can do it with ease/economically?

I mentioned the stuff up with volcano high to EE as brad mentioned before.

All these cuts is F%$#*&^ confusing. I read what Brad wrote at debate and times
bradavon wrote:Suriyothai
International Cut: 142 minutes
Original Theatrical Cut: 185 minutes
Extended Cut: 300 minutes
SO Ong Bak should be Full bitrate audio, correct aspect ratio, Anamorphic, film to pal.
Anything else needed Yi-Long, bradavon, Eva?

Ong Bak 3 hours!? Oh no, I'm sure Brad is talking about a different Thai film there (the name escapes me).

LOL Blade I was talking about Suriyothai NOT Ong-bak and it was at DVD Answers :) .

The best English subtitled DVD despite being non-anamorphic is the Thai theatrical 185 minutes DVD. The R1 is cut to shreads, as is the HK DVD even though both are anamorphic. The 300 minute cut is only available in Thailand but sans English subs.

The easiest way to work it out is by the films title if it's called "Suriyothai" (the original title) then it's the original cut, if it's called "The legend of Suriyothai" then it's the cut to shreds version. ALL cut versions seem to be called this (the R1, HK and alternate Thai DVD).

EE never replied to me last time I mailled them. Possibly because I asked if they'd sack their translator. Could have been that I suppose.
Actually I wasn't that bad, I was very indirect about the problems with that slang using moron.

Interested to know what their release of "Violent Cop" is like. Not a fan of the film but I'm curious about the treatment of TK on DVD.

I've moved JSA off the first post and down to "At the cinema / Misc information:" as the Tartan DVD beats it (except the price).

It really comes down to price vs. DTS. The R4 is £5.99 and the UK R2 £12.99. The extras are about the same (More documentaries vs. deleted scenes & interviews). I'd probably go with the R4 myself!

I've viewed the EE disc. Except for the hour-long documentary, the rest of the extras are just back-slapping fluff which can be missed. If the Tartan has the hour-long doco, I'd personally go for that (which I plan to do - DTS rocks! 8) )
