Whats you opinion of the A Better Tomorrow III ?

Post by jimmyscab »

Im about halfway through the movie, things are just starting to get exciting. Getting back to HK was a sigh of relief as the vietnam bit was getting a bit crappy. Will watch the 2nd half in a bit.

Has anyone seen the Taiwanese cut? What are the extra scenes?

hey,

it's a shame it's part of the trilogy because it's a better film than often given credit for. I've done a simple breakdown of the additions to the Taiwan version.

Note that the Fortune Star print includes some of these extensions as part of the feature but not all.

I liked it, too. It was actually the first one I saw of the trilogy.

I liked it as well, I possibly saw it before A Better Tomorrow, and certainly before the 2nd part.

Yeah not a bad movie as a standalone, best not to consider it part of ABT. Although the cast are pretty big in this, Ti Lung and Leslie were sorely missed.

Thanks for the link Knetan.

I liked it a lot as well. It feels a little bit like Tsui Hark's Bullet in the Head (of course it's no real match).
The only problem the film has, is that it doesn't feel like A Better Tomorrow. If it would not be part of the series, but an independend movie, what in fact is, what I feel about it, it would be much higher regarded, I think.
Compared to the other ABT movies, I like the 3rd part more than the second.

The poor man's Bullet in the Head I thought, it even starred the poor man's Tony Leung (Ka Fai).

"Bullet In The Head" is in a way Woo's version of ABT III (IMO).

Wasnt Bullet In The Head supposed to be ABTIII? But due to artistic differences Woo decided to abandon it.

Never heared of that. But I'm sure Knetan will be able to tell you.

As for Leung Ka-fai: he's probably one of the most talented serious actors from HK!

That's what I heard, so BITH is Woo's "take" on ABT III sort of anyway, while Hark made the real ABT III.. I think. :)

Or... BITH was what Woo wanted to do after ABT, was forced to make ABT2... then Tsui wanted to go with ABT3 and stole Woos ideas :D

That's what I feel about it anyways... If I remember correctly these two had kind of a falling out around this time...
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I think Tsui pipped Woo to Vietnam out of spite after they fell out over The Killer (7/89).

It was Tiananmen Square (6/89) that gave Woo the idea for Bullet (8/90).

ABT3 was released Oct '89.

When compared to Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Ka Fai sucks IMO.
