He pretty much stole the film from everyone else, which explains why it was very successful. It was released in 1995, when Carrey had Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Ace Ventura had all come in a relatively short period of time and all proved huge hits. Without him, I don't think the film would have had quite the appeal it did 12 years ago.

One of the more well-told genre pictures of its kind and certainly one of the most distinct Danny Lee cop performances ever. Solid relationship drama in combo with gritty, gory violence.

Crime Story - 4/5
Of all the films Jackie Chan has made in the last 2 decades, this has got to be the most underrated and underappreciated of them all. It is also by far his most adult film and the closest you'll ever see Jackie in a great dramatic performance. Even though its obviously not his real voice on the audio track (which really is a shame IMO), his performance is spot on. The story is a bit conventional, the fights are far and few in between, and the final scene does feel tacked on (not to mention it totally contradicts the scene right before it). Nonetheless, Crime Story is a great film and is a must-see for any action film lover, JC fan or not.

Moonlight Whispers - 3/5
"Takuya wants to be Satsuki's dog. Satsuki likes to see Takuya cry. Love hurts." A great director could make a great film out of a plot like this. In the wrong hands it could end up something ridiculous... which is what happens here. The film however is not bad. The beginning is very nice despite the weak use of music. Almost hard to watch because this kind of romatic stuff tends to make me jealous. Anyway, once the actual plot kicks off the film becomes both plastic and often hard to take seriously. The last scene for example is totally ridiculous, partly because the film makers obviously believe they've achieved something important and poignant. Yet, strangely, and maybe partly because of that, the film never loses its interest. There's a bit of nice black comedy, although not all of it is intentional. I also much liked the female lead who looks more of a real girl than a movie star. The very last image and the choice of music is wonderful. It's the 10th drop after the last that turns the film into a mess. But it's a strangely fascinating and silently fun mess.

From the director Bloody Sorcery, the excess remains rather subdued so Devil Sorcery doesn't make much of an impression. Ku Feng and Kwan Hoi-San appear yet again for the director.

Long Arm Of The Law Saga II - 2.5/5

Very much inferior to Johnny Mak's original classic, the sequel has good performances by Elvis Tsui and Alex Man, embodying some kind of thematic the film has. Otherwise it's routine but better routine than most, with the quite bloody violence being particularly memorable.

Time 4 Hope 2.5/5

Derek Chiu directs the true story of screenwriter Yuen Gai-Chi's road from comatose to loving individual, setting his sights on his nurse played by Athena Chu. Low-key and hands off in his direction, after the hour mark he goes haywire with his developments. They correspond to how real life can be but it does not translate well onto film.
