Days of Being Wild - 3/5
For the first time I finally saw it in one sitting. I know some people like to call it WKW's masterpiece but I really disagree, I think it's one of my least favourite of his films. You can see the beginning of the great WKW/Doyle movies but it's just not refined enough. Too much of an HK feel.
Curse of the Golden Flower - 2/5
Better than HoFD but still God-awful.
Ergo Proxy & Death Note - 1/5
Carp.
Chaos - 3/5
Not a bad film, but not really worth bothering with if you haven't seen it already. Thw twists are a little tiresome and go nowhere and there's this awful soundtrack. It could have been a good psychological thriller but it's just a drama.
Nana 1/5
I knew it was shite after 15 seconds (no joke) but I gave it 5 minutes to be sure.
Doppleganger - 3/5
Oh Kiyoshi Kurosawa when will you stop disappointing me. The man knows how to do some damn fine work but it always seems to go to pieces. It started off really promising but it ended up being completely ridiculous. I love how he transcends genre but he needs to ground himself sometimes.
Bus Stop - 3/5
Very disappointed by this after seeing it praised at ADVDG. Nothing wrong with a directionless drama but the characters only briefly appealed to me.
The Game of their Lives - 5/5
Brilliant documentary. I was so engrossed and caught up in the story of this North Korean football team thrust into the spotlight. Very neutral as well which was impressive.
A State of Mind - 5/5
I'd seen this one before but so this was just a reminder. It's the exact opposite of Game of their Lives because it leaves me utterly appalled. It's very normal, it's very day to day but this makes it all the more frightening.

I was actually thinking of this as I watched it yesterday and this is how I attacked it logically; the aliens that have sprung from this queen have been impregnating human beings for thousands of years. Now, natural evolution would denote that they'd become more adaptable to impregnating human beings, especially given that the aliens are the most adaptable creatures in th e known universe from the looks of things. It makes sense that it wouldn't take long for the alien to burst through a human's chest as they've become increasingly more used to our fragile bodies. This also explains why at the end, it takes seemingly hours for the alien to burst through the chest of the Predator - they're not used to adapting to the Predator's DNA and physical structure.romerojpg wrote:AVP well nothing can make that film better, they ruined it by having Aliens full size after an hour of time, guess there was something in the air to make the Aliens grow so quick, that alone gets the film 2 stars knocked off, ignorant, pathetic logic.
Oh yeah...I watched:

Tonda Couple – 3,5/5
Somai’s directorial debut. Excellent first 60 minutes, but unfortunately the second half isn’t nearly as good. ”Full” review coming soon.
Take Care of My Cat – 3/5
Nice, warm and somewhat realistic film but I can’t help but to think I would’ve enjoyed this better if it was japanese.
Testa t'ammazzo, croce... sei morto... Mi chiamano Alleluja – 3/5
Some weak parts during the first half, but the last 30 minutes is incredibly cool. I feel like I’m under-rating this.
The Woodsman – 4/5
Surprisingly well done. I was afraid they’d make the main character a complete victim but they didn’t. Kinda similiar to Monster’s Ball, but less pretentious.
The Uninvited – 1,5/5
Embarrasinly bad attempt to combine Asian new wave horror and psychological drama. Ridiculous from start to finish. The sheer amount of cliché is unbelievable.
The Fall of Ako Castle – 3,5/5
Very solid period epic from Fukasaku. Co-stars Shinichi Chiba, who also choreographed the realistic swordplay scenes.
Broken Oath – 3/5
Even 70’s HK remakes were far inferior to the originals, I see. Still a fun flick.
The Last House on the Left – 2,5/5
Terrific opening and lovely grainy cinematography throughout. The ending is so far from believable that it brings the rating down heavily.
Battles Without Honor and Humanity: Final Episode – 3/5
Surprisinly satisfying conclution after the messy fouth episode.
Dragon Princess - 4/5
Chiba, Shihomi, Kurata.... that's like the Jackie, Sammo and Donnie of Japan. Karate-fun at its best.

Have you seen I Spit on Your Grave? It's a better film in the same kind of revenge/exploitation genre as LHOTL. A bit hard to watch of course (it's pretty graphic and shocking, even today), but I think it's a more than competent and well made film.HungFist wrote: The Last House on the Left – 2,5/5

No, I haven't. I'm not be biggest fan of the genre, although I'm interested. I picked Last House because the dvd was less than 4€. If the price of the Grave dvd drops that low then I'll grab it no doubt.Barbarian King wrote:Have you seen I Spit on Your Grave? It's like $12 here, MSRP, so it's pretty cheap.HungFist wrote:No, I haven't. I'm not be biggest fan of the genre, although I'm interested. I picked Last House because the dvd was less than 4€. The Elite millennium version is the best version out of I Spit, plus Night of the Living Dead and Re-animator (Currently.. when Anchor Bay release comes out, we will see). The audio commentary is pretty good for I Spit, The director is completely honest in his approach to the movie. The extras are very slim, but at least they have the Robert Ebert version of slamming the movie which was fun to readBarbarian King wrote:Have you seen I Spit on Your Grave? The problem with that is the fact that Alien takes place in the "future", where it doesn't take the xenomorph 20 minutes to burst through John Hurt's rib cage; he's in quarantine for ages and then is walking about fine for a bit. He even gets to chow down a little.Barbarian King wrote:I was actually thinking of this as I watched it yesterday and this is how I attacked it logically; the aliens that have sprung from this queen have been impregnating human beings for thousands of years. Plus, they're like sharks; they're the ultimate killing machines which don't need to evolve.
Nah, unfortunately, I'm of the opinion that the last good film from the series was Alien³.
If the creators wanted to do a crossover match-up, they should've based it directly off the graphic novel, or if they'd wanted to do a direct sequel, they should've used the Earth Hive trilogy.

Yeah, but those aliens weren't used to the human body over the course of thousands of years. From the looks of things, Kane was the first human being that that race of aliens from LV-426 came into contact with. So it makes sense.Kurgan wrote:The problem with that is the fact that Alien takes place in the "future", where it doesn't take the xenomorph 20 minutes to burst through John Hurt's rib cage; he's in quarantine for ages and then is walking about fine for a bit. Evolution happens, whether you're the ultimate killing machine or not. And its reasonable to assume that the aliens on LV-426 are a different breed than the ones bred on earth for thousands of years from the same alien queen. They're heavily adaptable, which is why whatever host they take on, the alien that is birthed from the host takes on the traits of the host.

They can't have been impregnating for thousands of years. The tomb was sealed up for thousands of years after the Predators blew 'emselves up, perhaps, but the ritual can't have been going on for that long prior to that explosion... can it? :confused1:
Anyway, send your explanation to Anderson and co.; I'm sure they'd appreciate any help in giving the film some kind of logic.

Then what were they doing there in 1904 when the mining colony was wiped out?Kurgan wrote:They can't have been impregnating for thousands of years. The aliens had been impregnating human beings in those tombs for thousands of years. Simple logic dictates that the most adaptable creatures in the universe would adapt to make the process quicker. Or perhaps the Predator's genetically altered them to speed up the process.

I quite liked AVP. I am a huge Aliens fan and also Predator fan. I loved the original dark horse graphic novel (Still got it as well), plus also read various crossovers (Deadest of the Species). Although AvP is not upto Alien, Aliens or maybe Alien3, it does beat Alien Resurrection. I like the director, his adaption of Mortal Kombat is excellent, very faithful to the video game, Resident Evil is pretty cool, and so it the sequel, plus Event Horizon is a pretty cool horror movie (creepy in some parts as well)

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a decent enough no-brainer sci-fi action film and easily Anderson's best film since Event Horizon, but you cannot place this film in context with the Alien and films and make sense of it. The script is simply an excuse for various action set pieces and some half arsed attempts at suspense, respecting the canon of the original Alien films was just about the last thing on the filmmaker's minds, clearly.

I think you need to be a little more dramatic. Seriously.Shingster wrote:You do realise AvP is a completely bullshit film with a bullshit plot directed by a bullshit director don't you? I think it's about even for me with Alien: Resurrection and Alien3, both films that I like quite a bit. It's certainly better than Predator 2 though. Nothing can really touch Alien, Aliens, and Predator.
For fans with an overactive imagination, the films logic holes can easily be patched in, which I personally find a lot of fun. I like it when a film doesn't give me everything in high detail, but leaves me there to fill in the dots. It's fun and is part of the filmgoing experience.
