Don't know about the A/V transfers of various editions but rewind say that HKL's the best:

But HKL is the best version, right? HK Video offers the mono and lesser video, but I don't recall any problems with HKL audio. Joy Sales feautures the "flintstones mix", R2J most certainly has the same audio, and if there's a Korean disc it will suck :D

EDIT: Forgot Fox, I'm sure it's same FS crap as Joy Sales.

Joy Sales transfer looks a bit better than HKL, though.

English language wise, HKL is best. Nice print, tolerable remix, good extras and the option of that hilarious English dub. Fox and Joy Sales have rubbish audio so no dice

HKL.

I've seen pretty much all versions. HKL is still the best (by far).
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

The HKL has awful compression artefacts if I remember correctly.

yet on some scenes the picture sucks, granted its pretty good and crisp in most but there are some scenes that are quite terrible. e.g the girl on the antennea doing the acrobatics, some of the long shots of tht are awful.

guess maybe i just got a crap disc. but not to keen on re-buying that disc when i already got a dud one.

Isn't the Fox a FS Remaster? Personally I'd opt for that.

Yes. That means their audio comes from FS, too (aka fuck them)

That's always looked like that for some reason. Even the pre-DVD versions. Not HKL's fault.

hey,

Street Fighter sequence also goes soft but I always thought that had to do with the post-production somehow.

Wasn't the girl on the antenna an early attempt at CGI - mixing footage of her on a gym beam with the antenna?

Stick with the HKL. The other versions are worse

Thanks. It's bound to look much better than the HKL then, with acceptable audio (IMO). That is assuming it's not out of sync.

I'd opt for it over the HKL any day.

You own the HKL so may as well try the Fox, it's less than a fiver.

No, the Fox is absolutely terrible. Seriously:

http://web12.dvd2web.de/cityhunter/cityhunter.htm

It's grainy, dark, the whites are grey...
City Hunter is a live-action cartoon: it's supposed to be bright and pretty, not dark and ugly.

Both look a mess but overall I prefer the Fox. Captures can only show you so much.

Besides like I said it's cheap as chips.

i agree, the fox looks better, yes its a live action cartoon, but the colours on the HKL are too bright in comparison to the Fox and look wrong, but i suppose it does fit with the genre. but yeah i agree with brad the fox looks pretty good. isnt the HKL stretched too? jackie looks fatter in the HKL.

i think i'll pick up the fox and try it out. if not i can always offload it on a relative and pick up the HKL again cheap :D

Yeah, but the Fox sound is REALLY terrible. It's the aural equivilant of pan'scan or colourisation

Can't say I like the look of either, but at least HKL has better sound (and probably subtitles).

If it was say £8 I'd agree with the concensus but it's cheap as chips so you may as well see for yourself. You've already said you dislike the HKL.

Going from experiance In the Line of Duty 4 looks way better from Fox and both Royal Warriors/HK 1941 look great.

IMO (and I realise this is controversial) these are HK no brainer action flicks so a passable 5.1 remix even with dubtitles is acceptable, note I didn't say fine or good.

I kept the Fox ITLOD4 despite the HKL having better audio and proper subtitles, the Fox looks miles better. The picture improvement of (most) Fox releases is worth the loss IMO, and as I said they're very cheap so you may as well see for yourself.

You may not mind the audio. I know I've differed wildly at times from the consensus on this forum, and glad I opted to get it after all.

Screen captures only show so much, they're static images.

That's just my opinion though.

At least keep the HKL till you've seen/heard the Fox

No ultimate version

Post by chenlung »

Image: Joy Sales (or Fox if it's progressive).
Sound: HKL.
Subtitles: HKL.
Extras: HKL/Joy Sales.

You'll have to make your own version with other unmentioned sources.

I don't mind grain (it's unavoidable) just as long as detail is retained.
