Jade Warrior - 4,75 / 5

Here I was, expecting a small finnish movie with a couple of awkward swordfights and a stereotypical love story...

*Boom*
(That's the sound of my jaw hitting the floor) :D

+ Intricate and subtle plot.
+ Great ending (I know they won't, but they really should make a sequel).
+ The fights are well-choregraphed.
+ Tommi Eronen is a great actor.
+ The music fits the film perfectly.
+ Great cinematography.

- Zhang Jing-Chu's finnish sounds a bit... raw.
- Not enough fights.
- The final fight isn't ambitious enough. They should have tried to make it bigger.

Eagerly awaiting the next Sino-Finnish coproduction.

Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Yeah you're right! :) No it's not (as bad or) as good as Tom makes it out to be. I found it quite confusing, (lots of flashbacks) but then thats probably because I'm a simpleton. I thought the director was being a bit too clever and he ended up losing and confusing me. I didn't think the fight scenes were all that too but I admire the fact that the director is trying something different, well different for me, maybe I like and watch only a limited number styles of films. HungFist's review is a good assessment of the film, if you go to watch it, expecting it to be overwhelmed by big Chinese production values, then you'll be disappointed as I was a bit after seeing the poster (I can't read that much Chinese unfortunately), it is a Finnish film with some Chinese actors and actresses thrown in. I'd say it is an average film but with a "good" ending.

Does this mean there won't be any english subs on the finnish DVD ?

http://www.dvdplaza.fi/leffakanta/nayta.php?sid=6092

Julkaistu: 14/03/2007 (I suppose that's the release date)
Tekstitys: Suomi (finnish subs ? )

Looks like early unconfirmed information. Soundtracks and aspect ratio are not even listed yet. Finnish subs are listed, but that's probably only because there has to be Finnish subs, no official announcement needed as we don't dub or speak mandarin.

This store only lists finnish, swedish, danish and norwegian subs

But this store does list english subs. But their audio info is fucked (Finnish 5.1, Mandarin 5.1, Finnish DTS, Mandarin DTS... should obviously be Finnish/Mandarin 5.1, Finnish/Mandarin DTS)

Distributor here in Finland (Sandrew Metronome) list English subtitles for the movie on their web site.

http://www.sandrew.fi/index.php?mid=769 (page in Finnish).

I've just received the 1-disc finnish edition.

It's anamorphic with a Dolby 5.1 original track, english subtitles on the film AND on the special features.
+ It has an english audio commentary by the director.

Looks good. :)
