Getting a Macintosh

Post by EvaUnit02 »

Looks like we're getting a $5000 Crap'n'toss next year. I had no say in the matter. We'll see if OSX is as good as the fanboys claim. Their Ipods are garbage - DRM heaven.

As I said, I had no say in the matter. My mum is just buying one.

WHY is she buying one?

I had to use one for the last 3 years orso: 2 years at school and 1 at my internship.

cant say I like them much, although it obviously also had to do with me having a PC at home, so you run into shit with files and fonts not being compatible when you cross platforms all the time...

I like Windows just fine. Windows XP hasnt crashed on me, no big virusses have hit me, and most, if not all of my programs, seem to run just fine on my PC. I doubt I would EVER get a mac.

Maybe years ago it was the way to go when you're into graphic design and shit like that, but nowadays a PC can do the exact same thing as a Mac... so why bother?

I've used one briefly and thought it was fine. I say give it a chance first.

I'm happy with Windows (and it's universal acceptance) so have no need to change but personally believe Mac and Windows (2000 onwards) are both perfectly fine.

Why bother getting a PC if you're happy using a Mac? ;)

*shrug* Her friend is a big Mac fanboy, probably was influenced by him.

Fucking next to nothing is compatible with MacOS (it's in a better state than Lunix though - HAHAHA Lunix!)- that's my primary concern.

Fuck OSX Leopard man, I can't believe all the that's involved just to be able to take screen captures. ALL captures are only saved to PDF and then I have to export them to the desired format (i.e. JPEG).

The DVD Player won't let me take screen captures during playback either, becuz Apple loves smoking the cock of the MPAA.

Safari looks and feels like Firefox with down syndrome, thank god that there's an OSX port of Firefox.

How've you got Leopard; I thought it hadn't been released yet? Is there a dodgy version floating around on the ether or something, cos I'm still on Tiger.

I use Preview to do my screen grabs (like for the 'Share Your Desktop' thread.) Click File, then Grab from the drop down menu, and then choose Selection, Window or Timed Screen, for well, whichever of those you want. It saves the file as a default in .tiff format which you then just choose Save As... and select .jpeg as your extension. It does the converting itself. Again, I don't know if it's changed for Leopard, but this is certainly the case for Tiger.
For the DVD screengrabs I use a little widget called Capture, cos like you say, the DVD Player software doesn't have it as an option. I was hoping they'd add it as part of Leopard, but hey-ho.
There's another widget (both are free) called Screenshot Plus which I like too, but it's a bit buggy. Those are one-click efforts too, which isn't too bad.

As an aside, which DVD playback software does allow you to grab screenies? I've only used WinDVD and PowerDVD on Windows and as far as I know they don't allow for screenshots. I don't know if that's changed though in newer versions: I've v.5 of the former and v.4 of the latter. If there's a freebie DVD player for Windows that allows for screengrabbing, let me know, cos I'll have it.

Sorry, I was confused. I meant Tiger.

VLCPlayer lets me take captures during playback.

Have you tried VLC on OSX? I'm pretty sure that does the whole screengrab thing too because, well, it's the same software ;)
I'd completely forgotten though that it could play DVDs, and hence never brought it up before

Well I didn't get the "can't take captures during DVD playback error" and Cmd+Shift+3 dumped PNG files onto the desktop without any trouble.

The scroll wheel on the Mighty Mouse ceased moving upwards. Seems that it is a common problem and thankfully a tip that I found on the net fixed the it.

Fuck this shit, I've since plugged in a spare MS Intelli optical mouse. No flimsy scroll wheel and OS X has full 2nd mouse button support too, no more fucking holding down Control to get at content-sensitive menus.

EDIT: Ah, the Mighty Mouse can right-click as well. The scroll-wheel still sucks though.

You're not really a fan of reading manuals, are you? :)

Hard to do when I don't have the manuals, or rather access to them. I wouldn't have known what the hell the make of the computer was if "MacBook Pro" wasn't printed on it.

Ahh... fair enough then.
Click on that little springy-thing next to the trash and that'll take you to the on-line tutorials - some are in video format as well, which is nice. And for free, which is nicer.
