What do you think of Frank Sinatra?

Literally. Unless it Should Go Elsewhere

Arguably one of the century's greatest singers

What do you think of Frank Sinatra?

Post by grim_tales »

Did anyone see Room 101 last night? Davina McCall chose to put Frank Sinatra's music (all of it?) in there, which I thought was harsh. He "sings out of tune" based on what? One 2 second clip of the end of I've Got You Under My Skin, on every record? And any great song sounds bad to me if its sung badly, like at a karaoke night or whatever. There is such raw emotion in his live version of "My Way" from 1971.
He made his MGM debut in 1945 - "My only claim to fame" - he quipped, "is that girls swoon when I open my mouth"
It's her perogative, her opinion, it just sounded like an unstructured rant, and I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the comment that "he wouldn't get past the first round of X Factor" :? To be honest, that says more about X Factor than in does about Frank IMO
The best singers of the century would get voted off for being "too this" or "too that".
To be fair she did say who she preferred (Elvis), who was also a great singer/perforner. I know Mark prefers Dean Martin :)
I'll admit I haven't seen many of Frank's films, (according to Macall he was a good actor) he was very good in The Manchurian Candidate (1962).
So what do you think?
I just thought she hated ALL his music was harsh (when she probably hasn't heard all of it). And when so many fellow music industry professionals/critics, past and present, have said good things about his voice, I would submit it has some credibility.

If you prefer someone other than Dean Martin/whoever, maybe that can be added to the poll. Can there be a poll within a poll?

As it happens I do prefer both Elvis and Dino, but that doesn't stop Frank from being one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century.

Davina McCall is a moron, Queen of the Chavs, and her opinion counts for nothing amongst those with even half a brain. Paul Merton should've smacked her gob for that pile of arse she spouted.

Out of interest: what did he say in response?

He said lots of people followed what Sinatra did, so he was influential and that was hardly his fault. Davina seemed to be saying she didn't like his style of singing or words to that effect which sounds fair enough, but to label someone as a bad singer, because all you've heard is drunken idiots trying to sing on a Saturday night is a pile of arse, and made me really angry. Sinatra's diction was as clear as a bell, what idiots :( To say he couldn't sing in tune is pure nonsense.
Merton definitely shouldn't have put this in Room 101.
In fact he puts everything in Room 101 :?
You're right he should have slapped her around the face with a wet fish! :D Indeed Frank was one of the great vocalists last century. :)

He's a great singer, his acting was not the greatest though.

Yup.

At least Frank made at least one good movie which comes to mind, The Manchurian Candidate.

King Creole and Jailhouse Rock were reasonable B&W dramas from memory and Elvis was good but later in his career he stopped caring.

It's not possible to put only half of Sinatra's music in Room 101 ;) , there wouldn't be much point :D . Room 101 is supposed to be harsh.

I like Elvis but wouldn't choose to listen to any of them tbh.

Yeah but she didn't seem to put up a decent case, Davina is a knob, I know Room 101 is a lighthearted show but she was talking out her arse, not forming reasoned arguments IMO, and Merton is a knob for putting it in.
Next week (this Friday) Hislop has the Beatles and Charlie Chaplin on his Room 101 list

My Way, A Very Good Year, I've Got You Under My Skin, That's Life, All of Me etc, are all very good, some are classics :)

Maybe about time they cancelled the show then?

If they put every nomination in the room that would be bad enough... but Merton picks and chooses which means he chose to put in Sinatra.

Didnt like the guy. Supposedly he was a bit of a dick in real life, I didnt care much for him as an actor (looked like a midget with a big fake grin), and I dont think his voice is all that great. just a lazy singing night-club singer singing pretty easy songs.

I think a man who DID have a tremendous great voice, and could do everything with it, was Freddie Mercury. Frank doesnt even come close the to the quality of Freddie's voice.

Yeah, like I'm the only one who thinks Mercury is a better vocalist(!)
Many MANY people have stated that Freddie Mercury's voice is one of the best singing voices ever, who could do all genre's, including opera...

I'm sorry, but Sinatra is 'just' a nightclub singer who did pretty 'easy' songs to sing. Not that much variety. He had a nice sounding voice, but he wasnt as brilliant a singer as Mercury.

Not in my opinion... I don't dislike the guy but he wasn't a GREAT singer.

Indeed, @ Yi-Long :) Mercury was good but I think he was a better performer than singer (but he was a good singer).

Ah OK, I thought that line was from Flash Gordon :)
Mercury was a fine vocalist/performer but that sure as hell doesnt make Frank a nightclube singer :?
