Is anyone planning to see this?

Djimon Hounsou is an interesting actor but this looks like another Hollywood Gloss film. In the same vein of The Last Samurai, Memoirs of a Geisha, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man.

A Beautiful Mind and Memoirs of a Geisha I both liked but both and I suspect the rest look so damn glossy with perfect looking actors, every shot is glowing with gloss, most have too much money thrown at them and seem to only exist to win Oscars.

There's rarely any realism or gritty reality.

I could be wrong about Blood Diamond but the trailer just makes it look this way. It has fine acting talent but little else seems to appeal to me.

I wouldn't mind renting it. If it's good I may get the HD-DVD.

Kermode gave it a decent review. "Issuetainment", water cooler movie.

It can't be as bad as Ewick's last film, The Last Samurai. Such a dreadful melodramatic cheesefest that was.

I thought The Last Samurai was pretty good, actually.

"The Last Samurai" is one of the best recent Hollywood films.

The Last Samurai is nothing deep or meaningful but good blockbuster fun.

I was pretty impressed with Blood Diamond. It's a lot better than I expected it to be.

Have you seen Shogun (miniseries)?
If so, how do you like it?

TLS was an OK-ish movie, but way too glossy and the ending was ridiculous and ruined it for me.
It's not bad, but it's just your usual hollywood take on a foreign, 'exotic' culture, where everyone is dressed in clean, gorgeous garb and are well-shaven and groomed and shiny nice skin etc etc...

It would have been much better if it had been portrayed a bit more realistically, and if it had a better actor in the lead role, plus also had a good ending, instead of the shit we now had to sit through...

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Yup, watched "Shogun" and read the book as well. Enjoyed both a lot.
