Downloading it as we speak, although there arent many seeds so not sure if and when I'll have it complete
I don't really like the story of Akira that much. It's more the presentation that does it for me and I gained more respect when I learnt how much effort went into it all. Amazing animation. Might try the manga sometime, I've been getting into reading them of late.
Yeah presentation is obviously brilliant. I especially love the bike-chase scene in the beginning, with the kick ass music.
But yeah, the manga is ALOT better, ALOT more epic, and it just makes the movie seem like it just shows a tiny bit of the story...
Definately worth picking up the manga. Artwork is great as well btw. Too bad there arent any colored versions anymore...
Eva needs some perseverance, It starts off very naff with just action stuff. But it really builds up. I ended up watching the whole thing and End of Evangelion in one night my first time.
I'll give it another try these days, I hope...
You mean this film - http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0328258 (loathed it but cool music)? No relation to the anime, Kubozuka doesn't get his cock out, Ping Pong is just very popular in Asia.
I really liked the movie. I didnt like the moody guy with the glasses though. Thought he was a pouting dickhead... but it was just an entertaining movie that was fun to watch.

I rather see my kids watching Love Hina or whatever, then modeling themselfs after some talentless 16 year old 'idols' slut.
Oh, don't get me wrong. The moment shite like X-Factor (or whatever the future equivalent would be) is even switched on in the house, out goes the TV, regardless of how expensive it is.
I think the more 'we' get older, the more we think the kids can't handle anything We tend to underestimate kids, and overestimate ourselfs, once we grow older and wiser. But just think back to what you were like as a kid when you were 10-12: you were already thinking a bit about girls and catching some stuff on TV that didnt damage you permenantly etc...
This is true enough, although I was more specifically thinking about younger kids. 10-12 is a learning age, to be sure, and I was watching stuff I shouldn't have been watching when I was 8, so... I have no idea where I'm going with this, so I'll stop before this whole I'm digging gets any larger.
Good point, well made

Have you seen Haibane Renmei or Gunslinger Girls? Wolf's Rain too might be worth a shot.
Haibane Renmei is superb, definitely worth a blind-buy. Same core team as Lain, but is not a cyberpunk "mind-fuck" series. It's about teenagers who've committed suicide and are just stuck in a kind of purgatory where they're given opportunities to atone for sins before they move onto the next realm.
Texhnolyze is made by the same core team as Lain and is supposed to be pretty psychological, another cyberpunk tale and is reportedly somewhat Lynchian (I haven't seen it due to the price of the R1 discs).
Gunslinger Girl (not plural) is really a character study about young girls growing up. A quality series. Probably best to see at least the first 4 episodes before you consider buying it though.
Lourdes wrote:It's only relatively more. I'm quite happy with what I paid and it would have been less had I waited a bit or had I not paid $$$$ for the Play.com set.
For me it is way more expensive. I was going to buy 2nd Gig vol.1-5 from HMV, but they wanted £22 for the shipping and the total would've come to ~$150nzd.
Lourdes wrote:I'll pass. Do you know the name of that show with the girls with guns that do the bullets bouncing off boobs reloading? I thought it was that from the name. I saw a clip, funny stuff.
That sounds like Grenadier, I think I have that on DVD somewhere in my ridiculously overlong anime to watch pile. Gunslinger Girl looks like a mindless ecchi action show but as Eva mentions it's actually a sombre existential action drama. I always describe it as Haibane Renmei meets Noir.

That's the one. Breast reloading > *combat techniques.

The FUNimation HD remasters of Dragonball Z have been tilt-&-scanned (cropped horizontally) to fill a 1.78:1 frame.
What an idiots. I cant believe it's so hard to just take the fucking original japanese episodes and add some english subs to them. Why the hell isnt there a perfect version of this show on DVD yet?

Wow just downloaded the clip, and it looks great in HD. Should hopefully also please some purist out there, I just hope they will release each saga as a set, and not have like 20 dollars for only 4 episodes

Yi, what do you mean? I thought they are releasing them uncut and subbed for the HD dbz

... and cropped, according to Eva.

Exactly. They were animated for the standard television aspect ratio of the day - 1.33:1, the OAR in other words. Matting films might be okay as that's how most are supposed to be seen, but not TV shows of the era.

Ahh I see where you are coming from... Mmm yes you have a point, I do have some downloaded, I used to watch them all upto Buul (sp?), I haven't seen that saga yet. Use to like it alot, but bloody hell the Freeza Saga was a very long saga!!!.... Good ending to it thou... Poor Goku
Same here. Watched the first episode of Noein and didnt return to it. I think I had the first season or whatever deownloaded, but I think I deleted it all...

So it seems that the FLCL ultimate edition has the same awful video as the previous releases. Meaning I'll need to buy the R2J singles (LPCM but v1-2 have no subs) or boxset. Either way we're talking ore than £15 per episode.
Sure is. Eg Mangle really stuff up the release Macross Plus Movie Edition - a VHS transfer with hard subs. I'm strongly considering buying the R2J and making my own subs based on Mangle's.
Shingster wrote:It's nice having to fork out for r2j anime DVDs isn't it?
So far I don't own any series/crap episode count OVA's from Japan. I have the money but I think the pricing is bullshit and I won't pay it.

Is there an R3K?
I can only find a DVD set of the OVA (here), I'm interested in the movie edition.
Shoji Kawamori/Shinichiro Watanabe had the last 20 minutes reanimated and it is simply spectacular.
Wait, what are you complaining about anyway? It's only the one DVD.
By the way I've decided to give Macross a try. I don't like dimissing things out of hand. Soon as I'm done with Cromartie (which is great by the way) I'll try it.
