Baabul - is it as bad as they say?

Post by BiscLimpkit »

This is showing tomorrow but arsed seeing it. It's 3 hrs long (+ intermission and ads). Even with a 7:30pm showing, I wouldn't get to my bed until like midnight and I'm working the next day. Most importantly however, reviews have been pretty whack.... dreadful in fact.

But I'm quite surprised that Ravi Chopra could make such a terrible film.

Reading a couple of reviews and opinions on the imdb site and message board.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419468/

There are some who liked it but the rest seem to slate it.

why do you let peoples opinions stop you from watching a film? your obviously interested in it. so even if its shite its only a few hours of your time thats wasted...

I'm not really interested... just mildly aware because it was doing its theatrical run when I went to India. Whilst I don't really listen to film critics, I do value the opinions of everyday people. Going to have to go with the flow on this one.

Besides, the premise sounds crappy and enduring a 3hr bad movie is too much of a risk... which is why I'll let Slasher do it instead. :D

Please stop taking advice from Romero :D

Seriously that's a great idea in theory but there isn't enough time by far or money to watch every film you're interested in/mildly interested in.

That's why I like to get peoples opinions. I like to see what the consensus is.

why? i do, 99% of films im interested in, i watch. if its shite then well its shite but i found that out on my own. i do get reccomendations from friends for good films of course. but i tend to stay away from reviews, and even if the ones i read are negative i still watch the film as we all have different tastes. i mean, look at Tom....

Please lets not go over this again. I think you're wrong, you think I'm wrong blah blah blah blah.

We don't all spent all our spare time in front of the TV ;)
Shen wrote:why? i do, 99% of films im interested in, i watch.
Good for you.

A: I must be interested in much more films.
B: I work full time.
C: I don't always want to put a film on when I get home from work.
C: I don't get paid enough.

That's just an observation btw.
Shen wrote:if its shite then well its shite but i found that out on my own.
I've been over this with Romero many times but in short if the consensus says it's shite it's likely to be shite, I hate seeing shite so will pass thank you.
Shen wrote:but i tend to stay away from reviews
Each to their own. I like reviews and I realise it's impossible to Romero to stomach but tough (that is to Romero).

Bisc. agrees otherwise he wouldn't have started this thread :D

Brad, Shen & Romero - shut your faces and stop taking things way off topic please. I've already stated that I'm not interested in this title and I never was. It's a film that recently finished its theatrical run in India, I asked if it was any good, vast majority of people (i.e. friends, members on forums, imdb users) strongly advised against this.

Now if it were a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie, I'd ignore the negative hype and watch it anyway (as I'm a huge fan). But seeing as it's not, I don't give a shit.

Right - I want the next post to be back on topic. Aside from Mahabharat and Bhagban, what are other strong Ravi Chopra films? Thanks.

* Firstly there's no need to be rude!
* Secondly I'm sure the thread would go back on track.
* Thirdly you must've had a minute amount of interest to start a thread about it.
* Fourthly (yes it's a word :D) there are limited number of members who would have seen it, one of which has answered so discussion is probably over anyway.
* Fifthly I'm confident you've taken threads off topic before.

That is taking the thread off topic and I thought we weren't doing that? Post such questions here:

oh like you've never taken a thread off topic...theres no need to be rude and obnoxious, you must have had some interest to even bother starting this thread....
A: I must be interested in much more films.
B: I work full time.
C: I don't always want to put a film on when I get home from work.
C: I don't get paid enough.
A: i am interested in many films
B: i go to school full time and help run the house
C: i dont watch a film every night
C: I dont get much money either...

:D

but i just managed to pick up films "cheap" and watch them eventually, might take a few months or even longer but i watch them :D

FYI: Baabul is an affection term to describe a boy in Hindi. Kinda like calling a girl "pet" or "love" in English. In Bengali, this word is "baablu." I think that's right but Slasher knows Hindi a lot better than I do.

And for the love of god, I'd like to say sorry to Brad and Shen (but not Romero as he understands friendly B&B banter) for offending them. It wasn't my intent but FYI, I tell all my friends to shut their faces.

Nice one smartass (:D), but there's a difference between expanding on the original subject than starting up a pitiful nonsensical arguement. But in your defence, it was started by Shen - so I don't blame you.

p.s - I wouldn't tell my friends to shut their face and even if I would you probably need body language to go with it  . Each to their own.

LOL to my family I'm a gorra ;), but yep just like you said, but in this movie they referr to it as father, another word for father

Just watched this movie - 3/5

It pretty hard to describe this movie, the 2nd half of the movie is great, lots of drama, both Rani and the big A are on top. John Arabham is really great, and Om Puri is excellent as the eldest brother who worries about tradition rather than what family should come. However there is one thing that lefts down the 1st half, and it called Salam Khan, He is just rubbish in this movie, honestly if they put in someone else like SRK then this would be a better movie and even more of a compact within the 1st half. He is purely rubbish which is why I think the movie is getting panned. If you get through watching the 1st half, the 2nd half is sooo much better due to a tradegy in the family. The 2nd half is really really great, I really liked it, but have to say overall the 1st half kills off the film which is a shame.

Nice music, and glad to see John Abraham breaking out of hearttrob movie and instead acting :)
