hey,
Riding alone for thousands of miles ("Riding Alone: for a son" is the french title)... Gaumont... no specs yet.
The R3 Era had a reasonably good and subbed making-of but skipped including the trailer. An annoying tendency they've adopted for some releases of Chinese films.

News:

Satoshi Kon's Paprika has just been released in 50 french movie theaters.

The first reviews are quite positive. :)
Should I go see this ?

Wasn't a big fan of Millenium Actress, so I'm not sure...

Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

I recommend trying to see Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent first, as those are far more in tune with Paprika than Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers.

What's your source ?

Update:

On January 9th, HK Vidéo will release an anime called Spriggan on DVD.
No idea what it is, but here you go.

Image

On the same day, they'll release the second Contes du Sabre boxset (The Sword of Many Lovers and Handsome Siblings).

Image

In March, they'll release John Woo's Princess Chang Ping and Ronny Yu's Phantom Lover

They've also promised to release 3 Sammo Hung movies in March (but they haven't said which movies).

I agree with Eva: It isnt worth shit. There are a few nice scenes in it, but as soon as they reach the army base near noah's ark, it turns to boring shite...

Just received the Kitamura box. I usually dislike overly huge boxes but this is something so cool I don't really care.

The content:
Disc 1: Versus + Nervous (short film)
Disc 2: The Ultimate Versus + Nervous II (short film)
Disc 3: Aragami
Disc 4: Heat After Dark (short film) + Bonus material for Aragami
Disc 5: Alive (long version)
Disc 6: Alive (short version) + Messenger (short film)
* each disc includes loads of extras as well

The bad news: the box set fails on it's most important selling point: Ultimate Versus. Picture quality is horrible. I once owned a R2J bootleg (I may or may not still have it somewhere. I killed my Ong Bak bootleg with a hammer some years back, but I can't remeber what I did with Versus. I certainly didn't use hammer again (a piece of Ong Bak almost went through my eye)) and I think this french edition has better (although still poor) colours however the pixelization is unlike anything I've ever seen before. Even the slightest movement makes the image fall appart. Basically every frame looks like it was made of little squares. And I'm viewing the dvd with a 28" TV... Also, the disc plays less than perfectly on my dvd-player. Movement doesn't look as fluent as it should...

The original cut is included as well. It's hard to know how good the image could look, but I'd say not much better than this. Good colors, no pixelization, great presentation (I've only viewed a few scenes so far). It should be noted that the longer version doesn't only feature 10 minutes of new footage, but the soundtrack has been re-done as well. Music for example was re-scored, and if you've only seen the new version it may be hard to go back to this original version as the soundtrack just doesn't sound as good (some of the music is also played a bit differently).

The rest of the transfers would seem to be alright. Both versions of Alive seem watchable although not great. Aragami looks exellent, and the short films are watchable I think.

That's about the only thing lovely about it - I've got/seen most of those titles with Eng subs (including Ultimate Versus). Only thing I've not seen is Heat After Dark. An English subbed German R2 disc is floating around somewhere.

Zzzzzz....BUT...kudos for bothering.

Excellent. Phantom Lover needs a better transfer to go along with Tai Seng's subs and extras (multiple commentaries, making of etc etc). Although I can't take advantage of it, any word yet on DTS being featured on this? Hong Kong's first DTS movie.

The french Aragami is NTSC to PAL and interlaced

That being said, it looks good enough for me. Good colour and contrast.

Daaaamn!!! Whoa! The French disc looks totally awesome with all its sharpness. Will post caps of the German disc later. They look nowhere near as good as the French, though.

*I can hear someone say "Don't bother, then!"* :D

At least one scene has some flickering but it only lasts for short time (10 seconds maybe). Not the most "stable" transfer but it looks quite good to me. No need to upgrade. Maybe people with more high end equipment will have more problems with it, idk.

I don't know how Media Blasters looks like but I doubt it has this good color/contrast.

The R4 seems to be Native PAL. The German disc should be a conversion, too.

R4 is probably the way to go for those who don't own the film yet.
