Why not check out Assman? :D

Nah tbh, I'm a Bollywood n00b. I'm looking to check out some good titles but don't have a clue where to begin. Slasher would be the best person to ask.

Although in the New Year, I'm going to try and buy:

Kabul Express (once it's released)
Dhoom
Dhoom 2
My Brother Nikhil
Lagaan
Devdas
Sholay

That's my wishlist atm.

Are any less than 3 hours without singing every 2 minutes? :D . I've never got why EVERY Bollywood film has to be 3 hours + with so much singing.
Bhoot (India excellent horror movie, without any songs)
One ;). No singing, I bet it flopped :D

Pity the decent titles aren't £1.99/99. Any recommendations from that list Slasher?

Ow AISHWARYA RAI is in Dhoom2 (she's VERY hot btw guys, Tom/Hung wouldn't like her :D , she's too voluptuous).

You can check out the Don website here, it looks cool:

http://www.donthefilm.com/

If so bloody long again :( . I presume it has singing? Dhoom is only 129 minutes though; Dhoom 2 151 minutes.

p.s - Slasher - Where do you source your Bollwood films from or is it all from Sky? Can these be sourced cheaper than direct from Eros?

The Eros ones I'm guessing are Indian Imports, right/wrong? Dhoom is on a few sites such as Play but it's £14.99, too much IMO.

Cinema and dvds. I do get them from play.com, but want to check the eros site. Yes they are from india, Eros aren't really good with the mastering of indian film, however saying that, many indian movies do have grains in them (just see laagaan).

Bhoot I did think flopped due to this, but I liked it, and it is a cult hit. Yeah Don looks really really good.

Check out the trailers for:

Don (New Remake starring Shah Rukh Khan)
Dhoom 2, Aishwarya Rai looks nice in this. - Music is excellent

From the list on the sales, I liked:
Khakee
Bewafa

will check it all, and compile a list here.

Please do, cheers but don't stress yourself out it's 54 pages long.

What there is a cinema in your area showing Indian films? Cool. I tried to see one in Malaysia but was told it had no English subs :(

I've heard Indian DVDs are a mess. Either if they're from India or UK companies which just port them over. It's annoying as they're £14.99 a pop from Play.

I've heard Khakee is good but it's £6.99 :( , the video is the one on sale at £1.99. Same goes for Bewafa.

Surely people get bored of singing in every film, no? Why are so many really long and full of songs???

p.s - Thanks for the trailers.

I just watched the Dhoom, Dhoom 2 (which looks particularly cool) and Don trailers, and I have to say they do look really cool.

* Is it best to buy from the likes of Play or Eros?
* Do you need to have seen Dhoom to enjoy Dhoom 2?
* Are these 3 only three Action flicks in your list above?

It's probably best to start off with some a little light heard first.

Do Indian DVDs usually have Watermarks on them?

I did try watching a few Indian movies back in the day from my library (Ghatak, Om etc) - I dont know if you'd heard of those Slasher, and they looked like TV rips/pirate versions, the quality was crap, with a massive EROS logo on the screen and every so often there used to be an advert...
Also no English subs  :?
I remember Zinda had a VERY faint watermark on it which appeared every so often.

Some Bollywood titles have a bad habit of blatantly ripping off Western/World titles without permission. Or more commonly, they take memorable scenes and shove in random songs (which look like music videos).

However when Bollywood gets it right, I think their titles are magic. IMO a good Bollywood epic should be more like a musical, with songs integrated into the storyline instead of popping up erratically. A great example is Veer-Zaara - a profound love story, which many fans hail as a modern classic.

But Brad, the title you should really check out is Black. Not only does it meet your criteria ("only" 2hrs long and no songs) but it is a collosal movie in every sense of the word. The photography, score, acting, storyline - everything was so touching that it leaves an emotional imprint long after the film's finished. I've only seen it once and can't bring myself to watch it again, as it is such an emotional journey. You simply must buy it and watch it immediately upon purchase.

The DVD is beautiful too - in terms of packaging and content. You can get it from:

India Weekly
Yash Raj Films
Eros

They all sell the official UK version.

I'm still a Bollywood newbie but I can vouch for the following films:

Dariya Dil
Khoon Bhari Maang

I've been trying to find these two films for a while - I watched them repeatedly as a kid. Khoon Bhari Maang is a remake of a 3-part Australian mini-series called Return to Eden, which is also meant to be decent and is available on R4 in a 6-disc set. I'll need to buy this for sure.

It's 10 bucks, blimey that's cheap. Are they all the same version Bisc at? -

India Weekly
Yash Raj Films
Eros

The Eros one has completely different cover art. I'm guessing not as the same Eros one is listed at Play and looks to be bare-bones compared to the India Weekly & Yash Raj Films version which looks to be features laden, right?

I'm definitely interested. I'd like to pick 1/2/3 up.

Yeah, a lot cheaper than the price I paid for it! I paid around £16 but I used to rely on sites like Amazon, Play, Choicesdirect, Bensonsworld, Blahdvd etc. They all charge high prices for new Bollywood films.

Yes they are all the same version and don't pay attention to the cover. Even all the UK retailers failed to show consistent artworks. There is only one version of Black available and it is a 2 disc SE. Ok so the second disc is a music CD but my goodness, the score is magnificent. Stunning DVD package and some nice extras. I got mine from a UK retailer (either Play or Choicesdirect) and it will be identical to the one from Eros, Yash Raj and India Weekly.

Buy with confidence! And then watch it as soon as you get it. I can't even call it a masterpiece, as that term is carelessly used (even by myself) to every semi-decent production. Black is beyond that.

India Weekly are not UK based (couldn't tell you where they ship from - possibly the US). I thought Eros were but with £3 shipping, I'm not so sure...

I'm pretty sure Eros are.

Thanks Bisc I've just ordered Black and Dhoom for £16 delivered (Play and the like charge that just for one), from India Weekly.

Buying from Yash Raj Films direct would've been a tiny bit cheaper but they didn't have Dhoom in stock. Dhoom 2 doesn't look to be out to January (in 1 or 2 disc versions).

If I like Dhoom I'll pick Dhoom 2 up, the trailer does look cool and my god Ash is HOT!

I'll probably avoid the £1.99/99p DVDs as the titles look pants. I get the feeling you need to be careful with Bollwood films as an awful lot of dross is released.

p.s - How do you pronounce Dhoom btw? Is it Doom or something else?

Aishwarya Rai (nickname Ash):

Dhoom 2 Trailer (check it out): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeKGl3aeG5k

She's an A-List Bollywood actress. I've only seen her in sound-bites, no films.

p.s - Bisc/Slasher: I presume extras are also English subtitled?

Nice one! You won't be disappointed by Black. Dhoom I've not seen but I've been told that Dhoom 2 is better than the original. So even if you thought it was mediocre - it might be worthwhile giving the sequel a shot.

I'm gonna buy Dhoom and Dhoom 2 in the New Year.
bradavon wrote: p.s - How do you pronounce Dhoom btw? Is it Doom or something else?
It's difficult to explain how to pronouce it with words - you really need to hear it. The Indian alphabet is different. The letter "Dh" is stronger than just "D" - you really hear the "h" in "Dhoom" and doesn't sound like "Doom" at all (if that makes sense).

Moreover, Westerners just have a single sound for "D" but the Indian alphabet has more than one. The "D" in "Dhoom" is slightly lighter than a traditional "D"... it's more like a "th" sound.

I just made everything ridiculously complicated - bet you hadn't asked now. Sorry! Best find an Indian bloke and get him to explain it to you in person.

Is it Th-hoom? Try and spell it if it was an English word. I know that's not always easy/tricky.

If I don't like Black I'll be sending round my Ninja Leprechaun's Image

Noted about Dhoom. I must say the Dhoom 2 trailer makes it look much better but it's also a much more glossy finished trailer so it's hard to say. I also figured I should start with Dhoom and Dhoom 2 is 151 minutes too (compared with 129 minutes).

p.s - Don't you mean someone who can understand Hindi or is written Indian always the same?

Ooo cool you got Dhoom and Black (Yeah forgot about that, I got the Yash DVD which is really nice packaging in Tooting )

Mmm how to say Dhoom, best if you hear it in a song I think, so here is

Poor quality video, but sound is okay, the title song: Dhoom Machale

It sounds like Doooom to me, as in the Doom sound goes on for longer. Cool video, pity it's so low quality. The Dhoom theme tune beat I must say is really cool. Incredible dancing too.

Even if the film seems to be trying hard to look American, still I've not seen it yet.

Is it just me or does all Indian (maybe Hindi?) music have a very similar sound??? It immediately sounds Indian, instead of say British music which could equally be American.

Here's a better example of Dhoom:

It quite difficult to explain, but the actual words mean Make a blast or Blast it. You may say this, if its in a love song as your heart making a blast :)

Catchy song, if you buy it and not like it, I will buy it off you :)
