Bounce Ko-Gals (Japan - 1997): 4,5/5

Image

I was expecting a japanese Take Care of My Cat, but I was wrong.
Although Ko-Gals features the same kind of structure as its korean counterpart, it is completely different.

Take Care was a drama, Ko-Gals is an adventure. It's fun, sad and quite weird at times (for a foreigner who doesn't know much about Japan).

+ Great score.
+ Great acting from the gals.
+ Great 3-dimensional characters.

- Annoying steadycam shots.
- Unnecessary MTV-style editing in some parts of the film.

Overall... very happy to have seen this. Will buy the DVD. :)
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Fireflies: River of Light (Japan 2004) - 4.5/5
What a wonderful film. In the end I think it isn't really about fireflies, but about not giving up on the dreams you pursue.

Glad you liked it. It has a very special place in my heart because it's the film that originally got me interested in Japan and japanese culture (and maybe japanese school girls as well  ). I first saw it at the age of 14, when it was shown on TV. I then tried to find the VHS in stores but no luck. I bought the R1 dvd some years back...

Sister Street Fighter: Fifth Level Fist - 3/5
Pretty standard stuff mostly. Good cast with lots of familiar faces, feels almost like a family reunion (a bit like John Woo's Once a Thief). The last 15 minutes is really great despite some unnecessary speed ups. Highlights also include Etsuko dressing like a hippie (she looks so sweet in that short scene).

Have you seen any other films from Masato Harada Hung? If not I strongly recommend Kamikaze Taxi, Jubaku's pretty good as well.

Seen Kamikaze a few times, waiting for a decent dvd to come up. R1 at least is non-anamorphic.

The question is, which version are they working on? The international version is some 20mins shorter iirc. They released the DC of Unagi and the longer cut of Kwaidan so I expect them to go for the Japanese edit.

If they know about it before it's too late they will.

I'd open a thread here: http://madboards.madman.com.au/viewforum.php?f=12

hey,

Fury 3/5

A weapons deal goes wrong, Michael Wong (dubbed by someone else thankfully) breakdances a bit and then grows a beard in prison. Stock themes of the heroic bloodshed genre but director Johnny Wang keeps the intensity up via some competent mayhem.

Wing Chun - 4/5
Finally got this watch this movie, wasn't really expecting much, but really enjoyed the movie. Michelle Yeoh looks sooo nice in this. The fight scene are wicked, story is a bit pale, but quite funny in some aspect. I really enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed 90's period/comedy marital art

The Thin Blue Line: S2 - 4/5

Improved over the first series. This season is 10 years old but its surprising how contemporary some of the issues are - the right (or not) to carry a gun, racism, etc.
DI Grim could be Romero :D

Tai Chi Boxer - 3.5/5
Finally after watching Wing Chun, watched this, and again a really cool movies. Love the fluid moves of Tai chi in some parts of this movie, very elegant. Jacky is a really good martial artist watching SPL furthur cements that to me, and really hope that he starts getting better roles. He was funny and goofy in this, completely different to the cold killer in SPL.

Divergence - 3.5 / 5
I kinda liked this movie, It got my favorites actors, Ekin Cheng, Daniel Wu (When is he going to get a proper martial art movie), Aaron Kwok, Eric Tsang and special guest star: Yu Rong-Guang. This movies has two main actors who are connected somehow, and as the movie progress, you see how they are connected. Aaron Kwok is very good in this, Daniel Wu is okay as an assassian, really wanted a bit more to his story, and didn't like how it was ended for him. If someone can please tell me a bit more, then write here with spoilers. Finally seen Ekin Cheng in a much darker role and he is pretty good. It a bit slow in the beginning, but it does pick up, and is really good to watch. Kinda noir in style, love the brooding of the whole movie

hey,

The Unusual Youth 2/5

Dennis Law's (Fatal Contact) feature debut after producing the Election movies with Johnnie To is part an assured youth drama with sincere and real intents. The entire character gallery isn't worthwhile however nor is the off-beat tangents at very much inappropriate times. Herman Yau's cinematography is pleasing however and his production skills together with Law hopefully will generate the odd gem from Point Of View procutions.

Race Wong is the sole real standout here, slowly showing possible cinematic screen presence up there with the best of them.

@ Slasher: Which DVD did you watch? I can't wait for the R1 DD, the HK DVDs are awful.

No people shouldn't ask for the uncut version? They do listen I know that much.

Oh i'm sorry, didn't realise I was suposed to sign up to a forum that I have absolutely no interest in joining in order to enquire about a DVD release that I almost certainly will never be interested in buying, just so Eva and Brad can feel relieved that Madman know about the different edits of Kamikaze Taxi. Next time I know of the existence of alternate edits of a film I will keep quiet in case i'm called a cunt soon after for being so outrageous as to share said information! :P

Why would you ask what cut a DVD is getting for a DVD you've no interest in buying??? Chill Shing :D .

I only meant if you let them know then they've got a better chance of getting it right. Generally speaking you can't complain if you don't let people know.

Personally I wouldn't have used the cunt word but that's more Eva's style.

I brought it up because I figured other members would wanna know of the existence of a shorter international cut that Madman could possibly end up using (although I think it's unlikely given their track record!)

You tell me to chill, but those words hurt me very deeply! I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried a little when Eva called me a cunt! Even now the memory is too painful. I'm sorry, i've got to stop typing now and compose myself....
