The film and Cruz's performance are excellent.

I saw this listed on Play a few weeks back, who list it as a 2 Dis SE. Pathe have really taken their time but it's nice to see finally a decent Pathe Almodovar DVD. I hope for once they give an Almodovar film removable subs.

The American theatrical run wasn't too long ago so I wouldn't except the Columbia Tristar effort for a while yet (assuming they have the rights).

This WILL be mine :D

You forget Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down.

Since Sony hold the R1 rights to this (they do), then expect it have an RRP of ~29.99USD and thus will virtually never become cheaper than ~$18USD. The R2UK Pathe DVD will prolly be ~£5.99 in no time at all.

With the potential R1 Sony price vs. what the R2UK Pathe price will become, I couldn't care less bout the unremovable subs.

How? It's still got burnt in subs and virtually no extras. As are the other pre-Volver Pathe's.

Just because it's the only choice that doesn't make it decent (it is fine though btw).

Thanks and agreed. I won't be bothering to wait the UK effort looks stella.

Since it's the best release out there available for English speakers (the OOP R1 doesn't count, it would have a higher res than the R1 anyway thanks to the PAL transfer.).

BTW Can you please confirm if they're forced or not (since you own it)?
DVDtalk seems to claim that they're optional.
stella.

He he thanks. I was trying to work out how to spell that as I've seen stella but my spell checker doesn't like that and I knew it wasn't steller.

I'm mistaken Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down has removable subs, decent print too. It's a DVD-9 (6.66Gb) and actually a pretty nice DVD.

I also have the older Optimum What have I done to deserve this? (the R1 if I remember correctly is a dodgy Fox Lorbor) which has burnt in subs (I checked in DVD Shrink), they're good quality though. It's a DVD-5 and either bare-bones or just a trailer.

I own 6 Almodóvar films:

Bad Education R1 - UK R2 has no commentary. R1 is anamorphic.
Talk to Her R1 - UK R2 has no commentary + I think it's non-anamorphic. R1 is anamorphic.
All About My Mother - Korean, port of the older R1. It's anamorphic (it looks like an old print) but up until that box set comes it's the best. The UK R2 is a ropey non-anamorphic (my Mum has it)
Live Flesh - Korean, port of the R1. It's anamorphic unlike the UK R2.
Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! - UK R2, decent
What have I done to deserve this? - Dirt cheap, it's a budget title

There was a slew of Almodóvar released at the start of December from Optimum, all are about £7/8 from Play/Sendit:

Matador - Part of the R1 box set so possibly/probably better (the R1 is Remastered, but then the UK DVD is a new release). The UK DVD only has an Intro.
Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown - Part of the R1 box set so possibly/probably better (the R1 is Remastered, but then the UK DVD is a new release). The UK DVD only has an Intro.
Law Of Desire - Part of the R1 box set so possibly/probably better (the R1 is Remastered, but then the UK DVD is a new release). The UK DVD only has an Intro.
The Flower Of My Secret - There is a OOP Sony R1, extras are about the same though (R1 Making Of, UK Interviews)
Dark Habits - The R1 is a dodgy looking Fox Lorber (also according to an Amazon.com comment it's cut by 15 minutes)
Pepi, Luci, Bom - Doesn't look to be released on R1.
Kika - Doesn't look to be released on R1.

Pepi Luci Bom, Kika, Dark Habits and The Flower of my Desire look like a possible purchase. The R1 Box set Exclusives I'll wait for a separate disc release.

I remember I've seen Matador (the only film of his I've seen). Thought it was pretty good.

My UK copy arrived today from CD WOW.

It doesn't have the slip-case that the version I saw in Sainsbury's supermarket does :( . Otherwise it's identical, no big deal it's a slip-case but I thought you guys might like to know.

I've checked and CD WOW have confirmed theirs doesn't have a slip-case.

The Sony R1 is out in April:

* 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer
* Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio
* English Subtitles
* Commentary by Pedro Almodovar and Penelope Cruz
* AFI Tribute to Penélope Cruz
* Director and Cast Interviews
* "Making Of" Volver
* Photo Gallery

It looks pants compared to the UK effort.

What is more interesting is there will be an HD version too, which is great especially when there must be less than a dozen non-English language titles on HD.
