I would just like to state that Roth's films are not really horrors when you think about it. Personally, I'd class them in the same genre as American Pie, Bad Santa, There's Something About Mary etc... gross-out comedy.

I agree it is wrong to apply comments like "sickest gorefest ever made" - poor marketting and hype generated by the uneducated. One of my friends claimed that Hostel made her want to physically vomit. I'm more disturbed by such films as Hard Candy, Mr Vengeance and Koma.

I'm not in a rush to see any Eli Roth films. I mean, even hardcore gore-hounds think his films suck and they usually love any old crap, like the Friday the 13th series.

It is not called "New Wave Horror", it's the Torture sub-genre.

Not at all, Torture has Always been in horror films in the 70's, 80's and 90's and beyond its nothing new at all. Its just now been give a label latley. A crap one ,esspecially since theres bugger all torture in most the films apart from maybe 2, Saw and Hostel. Theyare still pure horror seen it all before.

Magnificent Warriors: 3/5

Average Yeoh flick. If you can forgive the many plot holes and incoherences (gunshot wounds don't seem to have much effect on the heroes, especially Richard Ng), you'll find this is a nice little film with decent action scenes.

The Iceman Cometh: 3,5/5

Typical Clarence Fok film. Poor cinematography, awkward pacing, good over-the-top acting from Yuen Wah and Maggie Cheung.

This has got to be the worst HKL DVD I've ever seen, though (on par with Legend of a Fighter). Grainy picture, out-of-sync sound and terrible subtitles (most of the jokes aren't translated properly).
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Nice one thanks Tom. I was wondering if I should pick up Magnificent Warriors and for the price of the R1 I'll get it to bump my next DVD Pacific order.

How is Yeoh?

p.s - Can you understand Cantonese?

She's OK. Quite convincing as a female Indiana Jones, I must say.

Well enough to understand puns (which is why I dislike HKL even more now).
Their translators have no sense of humour.

The coffee/gafeh joke in Mr Vampire.
The Kuang Sheng joke in Armour of God.
The rape-related quiproquo between Yuen Biao and Sammo in Prodigal Son.
The Fan Mei-Sheng/Sammo cooking joke in Magnificent Butcher.
The hooker=chicken jokes in Iceman Cometh.
The Yeoh/Donnie quiproquo in Wing Chun.

The translations are so bad the jokes aren't even funny anymore.

How does it go? How should it go? I have that.

I think they tried to be too standard with subs so everyone understands them, why I'm not sure.

Cheers.

How are the Prodigal Son and Magnificent Butcher jokes supposed to go?
Doesn't the IVL translate the Jackie joke in AoG with his Mandarin name rather than Kong Sang?
I just read it as Kong Song anyway, I get jokes :)

hey,

Goodbye Captain 3/5

A bit of a sleeper hit this 1998 actioner starring Yu Rong-Guang. Well produced mayhem and with some surprisingly dedicated gritty fights, considering 1998 was part of the downward slide of Hong Kong action cinema.

The Thin Blue Line Season 1: 3.5/5

Hard to beleive this is over 10 years since I first saw it in 1995. Still funny but has a yendancy to rely on smutty humour, and certainly not Ben Elton's or Rowan Atkinson's best work. Still, I did like David Haig as chauvinist detective DI Grim, seemingly modelled on 70's TV cops - his unintentionally rude outbursts are often very funny, with some good lines. And I loved James Dreyfuss as the chocolate loving, childlike PC Goody, who's as camp as a row of tents and bonkers! :D
Interestingly, Stephen Fry turns up in one episode playing a scoutmaster called Brigadeer Blaster Sump - a character not dissimilar to his General Melchett or Duke of Wellington in Blackadder.

hey,

Edge of Darkness 3/5

Solid, gritty undercover thriller from Fung Hak-On. Thankfully maintains its grim mood throughout, giving us intense violence and performances that matches the overall quality of the film. Especially Alex Man who makes his usual OTT antics pay off. Lo Wei appears in a fairly big suporting role as the big boss of the piece.

Well said Knetan, let's get back on topic please...

Street Fighter II: V 1/5
Now I remember why I don't watch anime series. An insult to the game and the entire SF legacy. Pure garbage.

Assault on Precinct 13 – 4.25 out of 5

A true classic in every way. From the slow burning pace that takes time and ponders along at a snails pace and builds so much tension that it needs to crack. Crack it does and when the film gets into the flow it’s truly a masterpiece. The action isn’t exactly all the time, but when it rears its head you know its something special as the cast members all do such a great job that we get to care about them all. The main shootout is an amazingly well paced and edited sequence of gun carnage, some wonderful editing and tense situations bring the screen alive.

Really the films just a beautifully different experience and nothing really could be improved on this simple siege idea. Carpenter films rarely get too complex and this is an easygoing idea placed onto the screen with true excitement. Films rarely get me so into them and really the films funny, perfectly cast and acted and features some suitably spooky music that tops the films off perfectly.

Simple films like this work, and Carpenter knows how to do this well and craft a story with characters we want to root for and want to get thru all these incredibly intense moments. Its dark and very well made, even scary at times as the way the gangs spread out and form soundless armies in the shadows of the night is a thing to savour, and the silencer shoot out is quite breathtaking as the rat a tat of bullets ricochet and pop all around the precinct.

Not a film easy to say why it’s one of Carpenters best film, but hell it’s impossible to actually fault the final movie
