The Departed - DVD and HD
Look for the Martin Scorsese pic to be released on February 13th (or 20th, awaiting final confirmation) in both regular single-disc and deluxe two-disc editions. No word on bonus materials yet, but look for HD-DVD and Blu-ray editions to be available as well. Stay tuned!

This film was consistently top notch in all areas and easily makes up for GoNY's inconsistency (I haven't seen The Aviator). I what didn't like though was Sullivan's fate which is pandering to a mainstream Western audience that demands, that those who "do evil" should get what deserve.
I'd say it's as good as Infernal Affairs, but they're quite different. TD concerns itself more with the characterisation, IA is more of a tense thriller. You don't really feel as much tension in TD as you did in IA.
I saw this on projected onto a lower-half of an IMAX screen and all the detail granted by the massive resolution was marvellous, celluloid really does blow DVD away.

Why is your signature back? Please change it. It's awful and makes me feel ill.
Thank btw. I enjoyed it too but thought it too long, the pace is better in the original. They are as you say very different though. I'll probably get this but having seen the original and preferring it (Leo is no Tony) I'm not hugely fussed tbh.
My thoughts in more detail: http://www.alexmccaffrey.com/Reviews/The%20Departed.htm
7 out of 10.

@ Grim: As Eva said + if it's from EIV, otherwise no.
I bought "Far from Heaven" for my Mum's boyfriend for Xmas (excellent film) and as I don't know if he can play non-R2 DVDs (and it would be painful to find out) I had to get the UK R2 offering.
It's an EIV DVD and the cover is so awful. I almost feel embarrassed to give it to him. It looks so cheap and nasty.
p.s - I'll get the R1 2 Disc SE myself.

SWEET. The Departed is on a HD30/DVD9 combo. The DVD side is prolly missing the extras, but I don't care.
Warner Home Video have announced the US Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD release of The Departed for 13th February 2007.
....
The HD DVD release ($39.99 SRP) arrives on a HD DVD / DVD Combo (30GB/9GB) with the film presented on Side A in 1080P 2.40:1 Widescreen with English (DD-Plus 5.1 & Dolby TrueHD 5.1), French and Spanish audio (DD-Plus 5.1 Surround) and subtitle options. Side B contains the film presented in Standard Definition.

It is. Should've included the BD details too!EvaUnit02 wrote:SWEET. The Departed is on a HD30/DVD9 combo. The DVD side is prolly missing the extras, but I don't care.
The Blu-ray is identical but not Combo of course and instead of Dolby True-HD it's getting PCM 5.1 (like the HD-DVD it's getting DD Plus). I guess BD doesn't support Dolby True-HD.
Front and Rear Cover art for both HD-DVD, BD, DVD 1 Disc and DVD 2 Discs can be seen here: http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/ ... arted.html
I'd pick the HD-DVD up too as it contains both HD and SD transfers. For now I'll pick up the R3 but I'm in no rush.
It will be funny if all you BD naysayers are proved wrong and HD-DVD dies

*Yawn* I'll be getting a PS3 somewhere down the road anyway, I'm not rattled. It will be funny if all you BD naysayers are proved wrong and HD-DVD dies. It's not like BD software costs any more. To put so much weight into a format winning just because you guys dislike Sony when you've no real idea HD-DVD will win seems daft to me.

WTF I hear Leonardo DiCaprio is likely to get nominated as Best Actor. Sure the Oscars are more about whose popular, marketing and what's the IT film but Best Actor.
Sure his performance is fine but it's not in the same league as Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scotland. It's not even in the same planet. I can't believe it's being nominated for so many awards.
It's a perfectly fine film but the original didn't even get nominated for best foreign language film and it's a much better film.

UK EiV cover:-

Decent cover, aside from the quote.
Specs:-
# Additional Scenes with Introductions by Director Martin Scorsese
# Feature-length TCM profile “Scorsese on Scorsese”
# ”The Story of the Boston Mob” Featurette – The real-life gangster behind Jack Nicholson’s character
# ”Crossing Criminal Cultures” Featurette – How Little Italy’s crime and violence influence Scorsese’s work (source= dvdtimes)
Seems to have a significant exclusive extra. I'd still choose the HD combo over this though.

Leo got nominated for BLOOD DIAMONDS.
BD supports DD True-HD (and it's DTS equal), but "most" (Sony?) studios have decided to wait to include it untill "everyone's" amplifiers supports it aswell... thus in the meantime including PCM5.1 which is superior to any other format (since it's uncompressed audio).

Correct I've learnt it supports DD True-HD and DD Plus thanks though.BD supports DD True-HD (and it's DTS equal), but "most" (Sony?) studios have decided to wait to include it untill "everyone's" amplifiers supports it aswell... thus in the meantime including PCM5.1 which is superior to any other format (since it's uncompressed audio)
It's not a case of supporting it as PCM Uncompressed will have just as much trouble in most Amps. Imagine that bitrate going into a normal Amp. For any of them you need an amp with HDMI or 5.1 Analogue inputs (which many Amps have today).
Correct PCM Uncompressed is well Uncompressed and carries the highest bitrate however it's not superior or at least not in theory as it, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby True-HD are all Lossless formats so should sound identical.
Sony are probably not using Dolby or DTS codecs to save themselves some cash. Fox BDs have DTS Master Audio.
According to this the R1 has it:Seems to have a significant exclusive extra. I'd still choose the HD combo over this though.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the exclusive extra and it's decent but short (25-30 mins), it could've been cut on TV though.

There is a cool looking steelbook available in R1 land (but only available at Best Buy):
