They were threatened by the rights holders of the film in the US and didn't release their version.

Honestly, I have NO IDEA how Panmedia gets away with it. I know that there's a move afoot to take care of them though.

Didn't George Tan claim he had the rights to this?

Hopefully this new release hasn't been squashed into a 2.35:1 frame.

IIRC, the Mandarin version misses a lot of footage from the beginning of the film.

I think for legal reasons some prints removed the Bruce Lee footage after Golden Harvest threatened to sue.

Did Soulblade by any chance create a composite print for the Mandarin version using the English unsubtitled version for the main and the Chinese for the credits (for possibly better quality in anamorphic and without subtitles)?

Think the first disc is identical to the earlier release

Image

most of the special features seem to have been kept for the english dub disc

Mandarin has the better print though english has more colour, both have weird aspect ratios,on my computer anyway.

Here's Bruce in the mandarin version

and here he is in the english dub 8)

Are Soulblade so dumb they STILL can't format aspect ratios properly?

Someone claimed this was a glass print, what the fuck were they talking about?

Soulblade got the Germans to do some of their releases, they blame the UK crowd for 'Dance of the Drunk Mantis'.

The Germans did Secret Rivals and Snuff Bottle. Theses discs aren't perfect - digital blocks appear briefly on Secret Rivals and Snuff Bottle is a cut print - but at least the aspect ratios are formatted correctly. As a company, they are terribly amateurish despite good intentions

I was happy enough with SNUFF BOTTLE apart from the cuts.
The new subtitles are taken from the original burnt ones, which at least means they're not dubtitles.

Didn't rate UNICORN enough to bother with this 2-dsic set and I expect most fans will feel the same.

Unicorn is an average basher but almost reads like a who's who of HK stars of the period. For that reason alone i think despite flaws this release will prove popular.i assume it's a decent seller,it's the 3rd uk dvd release in just over 2 years! 8)

Only because they keep plastering Bruce Lee over the cover which makes them no better than the exploitationers in the 70s. Sell the film on its own merits and see what happens...

Got the 2-disc set for my birthday. Both English and Mandarin versions are 2.35:1 with that weird anamorphic squishing.

Compared to the old full screen tape dupe released by Vengeance, the English version is censored in places (old UK cuts perhaps?) with several stabbings and inpalements trimmed to the mininum - typical of the BBFC's censoring of kung fu films prior to James Ferman.

The Mandarin version is missing all the pre-credits footage, the montage that follows the opening credits, and all the super-imposed shots of Bruce Lee.

So in short, all versions suck!

I think it's a bit odd for Soulblade to re-release it (especially if the quality's not that better).
