Fistful of Dollars/For a Few Dollars More.. new MGM SE'

Post by grim_tales »

I'm almost certainly getting this along with "Few Dollars More: SE" but what I'm concerned about is the additional footage part. Is it inserted back in the film like MGM's earlier "Good/Bad/Ugly" SE? I always thought the theatrical versions represented the most complete ones.

I'll keep my R1 of TGTBATU though.

Awesome, i will deffently be getting those as well.
The only thing i did not like about the GTBATU R1 SE was new remixed 5.1 track, which replaced all of the original gunshots with new generic sounding ones that seem very out of place IMO. Hopefully they will do a better job with these.

Hold on, some stuff I didnt know:

About 30s of brutality is missing from all current versions (even the R1 apparently) of "Dollars More", also there is a longer Italian print (95m PAL) of "Fistful" that is on the current Dutch DVD. The International edit on all other R2s and the R1 is 89 min NTSC and 92 min PAL, but they could use the longer print on these new SEs (seems likely), both of them say they have "Extended Footage"....

I may get the new DVDs of "Fistful" and "Dollars more" but will keep my old R1 of "Ugly".
On the other hand if its "Extended" the way "Ugly" was with obvious dubbing in the extra Italian scenes (also, longer doesnt necessarily mean better IMO) I dont think I'll bother.

the extra fistful footage is a tacked on specially filmed for usa television prologue featuring harry dean stanton...despite reports it won't be back in the film just on the dvd as an extra.

Which is the right order and are all decent?

It's odd how the likes of DVD Times etc . . . haven't reported on this. The old R1 isn't remastered or anamorphic though, right?

Nice find Grim.

No, the old R1 of "Fistful" is non-remastered and just plain letterbox, as is the R1 "Dollars More". Only TGTBATU is 16/9 (still non-remastered though but looks okay). While the new R1/2 blows it away, no-one asked Leone if he wanted the extra footage there.

Is, as Sam says the new "Fistful" the Int'l cut (same as old R1). Sam are you saying the Italian print adds Harry Stanton?

Brad, the order is:

A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good The Bad and The Ugly.

Yes all are good films IMO, TGTBATU is very good (and I'm not even a big fan of Westerns!) You can clearly see Leone
refining his technique through all 3 films.

A Fistful of Dollars is a remake of/based on Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" but this wasnt the first time it had been remade, there was a Japanese film called "Youth of The Beast" in 1963 that transferred the Yojimbo story to the Yakuza underworld.

Personally I'd put up with unwanted or rubbish footage to get a vastly superior transfer. The footage only lasts for 10 minutes or so the film is much longer.

Thanks btw.

Yes the SE transfer of TGTBATU is vastly superior but the dubbed footage didnt add anything to the film, IMO.

Hey,

Here are the pack shots of the R2 of Fistful of Dollars and the other spaghetti Western SE's. :)

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=56436

If its possible I may upgrade my R1's of the first two (or maybe just "Dollars More", I don't know). :)

Hey,

TGTBATU SE is £8.99 @ Play now -

http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=ti ... tle=150573 :)

At that price I can't decide whether to buy it, the transfer/extras look excellent but its' not the theatrical cut I know. :( (Same for the first two Westerns). Perhaps I should sell the R1's of the first two and just double dip TGTBATU? :?

Mark are you going to get the SE's of the spaghetti westerns? Someone on DVD Talk tried to persuade me these SE's would have Mono because the R1 SE of TGTBATU had the "original Italian mono track" Who wants that? :D As I said, even the R1 SE of Ugly only had 5.1 English so I no reason why this should be different.

I won't be buying these...

I liked the films... just not enough to own...

If I had to choose one film as best it would be TGTBATU (theatrical version). I would hang on to that DVD I gave you as it's still the best overall incarnation of the film AFAIK. I'm sure you've researched this more than I however...

:D Yes I'm hanging onto the version of TGTBATU you gave me :) I might upgrade the first two though...? The transfers on the R1 are pretty rubbish TBH (R1 of Dollars More is cut too). I know the s/t is original but still.. :?

Because the added scenes never had english parts recorded. They had to be added especially for this restoration, this means there is no orignal english mono for the extended version.

As for Dollars and Dollars More, maybe the cut scenes were orginally made in english and have the mono soundtracks. It that is the case, im sure the R1 SEs will have the monos as well as new 5.1 soundtracks (if they remixed it), dunno about the R2, we always get screwed for DVDs here anyway.

Someone on DVDforums said there was a rumour saying am R1 boxset will be released with Fistful, Dollars More and Duck You Sucker since Ugly has already been released. It hasnt been confirmed but i reckon you are more likely to see a boxset of the Dollars Trilogy, it would make more sense.

I dont have the Ugly SE yet, so i dont mind either way. I would like the Italian Mono, so its R1 for me.

The SE of The Good The and the Ugly is 8 pounds now at play.com (as is Enter the Dragon SE btw).

I'm in doubt if I'll be buying it. Caught it once on TV (in bad-shape fullscreen version) and liked it alot... but all the info about the missing mono, the missing italian, the new sound effects like gunshots, the new voice for Van Cleef in the extra/extended scenes, and not having the original cut included... is kinda keeping me away from this...

I really wanna watch the movie again, dont get me wrong... but I'm just kinda hoping they'll right their wrongs... and release a definite version...

Im going for the R1 SE. Even though the English 5.1 track features new sound effects, id quite happily listen to the Italian Mono, it is just as much the 'original' soundtrack as the english one is from the old Ugly DVD.

Yeah but longer doesnt always mean better. The theatrical cut is fine IMO.

However you may want to see this Japanese version, the same as the R1 SE but with DTS:

Hey,

According to CD-WOW the FoD SE has 5.1 and DTS but no mono. I'm still thinking about upgrading though if a R1 comes along, for a much better transfer and extras.

http://www11.cd-wow.com/detail_results_ ... at=region2

"For A Few Dollars More" is the same plus a French track.
That runtime (126mins) appears to be the same as the Theatrical Cut? :? The R1 TC is 2 hrs 11 mins long I think.
