When the Last Sword is Drawn - any good?

Post by EvaUnit02 »

Is "When the Last Sword is Drawn" any good? Is it on par with the Yoji Yamada films? Thanks.

I'm guessing that Shingster liked it, since his review seems to go on forever.

I could've sworn Madman had released this. I guess not, they've released a decent Twilight Samurai though (when my order eventually arrives from Madman I'll be able to say how good that is).

The only English friendly Tartan version is interlaced and NTSC-PAL, you can see a capture comparison here: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompar ... _drawn.htm

Personally I'd still opt for the Tartan.

p.s - There is also a Fox Lorber R1, Anamorphic, DD2.0 only with extras DVD: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=19687

I thought it was quite good, although I can't compare it to the Yoji Yamada films. There's a lot of history involved in this one, and knowing the history helps understand the film better. The characters are quite well drawn and the film works well. Personally, I don't rate it as highly as Twilight Samurai, but that could just be my personal tastes. :D

I'm asking bout the actual film, not the DVD specs (the R3K 1-discer is only ~£5 from DVDfromkorea). Thanks anyway Brad.

That review was over 1000 words longer until about 1hr before I posted it. :D

The film's overlong like my review and the melodrama is harder to swallow than in the Yamada films, but it's not too far behind Twilight Samurai and better than The Hidden Blade (which is just a xerox of Twilight Samurai, something Yamada has a tendency to do.)

I know, I was just giving the inevitable DVD info anyway. That's a good price.

Its a superb film, long winded at times maybe, but by the end it feels great to have seen it and its fairly action packed too. Definatly a great film and not far behind the Yamada samurai movies thats for sure.

Bradavon he asked if the film is any good, not what dvd to get :D see the film then comment :D the Japanese dvd is better than the crap Tartan dvds anyway so get that.

Jeez Louise I'm not even allowed to comment about the DVD now? I didn't comment at all about the film and you still bitch like a little school girl.

Thank you for stating the obvious, something I already knew as I'm capable of reading what Eva asked for, he also corrected me above if you bother to read it. Stop picking at my comments deliberately and get off on something else.

Go screw yourself!

p.s - I've no doubt the Japanese DVD looks better I never said it didn't. I did say the Tartan was NTSC-PAL and Interlaced if you again bothered to read my comments. The Japanese DVD incidentally has free coasters and costs a fortune, no thanks.

Eva has the right idea with the Korean DVD though (I'd still get the Tartan btw :D).

Oh calm down, bradavon. You know you make yourself an easy target for being corrected when you are so fond of correcting everybody else. Just Friday, at TheDVDForums, you felt the need to correct saigon's "cut and paste" to "copy and paste" for no reason. Everybody knew what was meant. Saigon sure didn't come back with an "Go screw yourself, bradavon!" comment.

Relax. If you're going to dish it out, you've got to learn to take it.

I didn't like it, one bit all the acting and everything was just so overdramatic and ridiculous. Even having a Hisaishi score does absolutely nothing for it. "The Twilight Samurai" was considerably better although there was still too much melodrama and TV polish for my liking, but it is a Yamada after all.

Using your argument: You don't own every version of When the Last Sword is Drawn but still felt equipped to pass judgement on which is the best.

I get your point on films but it's entirely different IMO to talk about DVD quality of DVDs you don't own. Which you yourself have done in this very thread. How come I should shut up when I do it but it's okay Romero for you to do?

I still think you sounded rather rude to Romero. But you're right, I don't see a problem with what you said about what is the best DVD :?

Yeah, I ordered the R3K yesterday (along with Summer of Kikujiro, Gohatto and A Snake of June).
