No no no, Lourdes is telling you that Ripping does not mean making a DVD-5, if you want to talk literally why we use the term "ripping a DVD" then it alludes to the act of ripping the content off a DVD and onto your hard drive. Ergo, it only refers to the act of removing the files from a DVD, not the re-encoding that comes later when you make a DVD-5.

Exactly.

That's why Lourdes said:

"Ripping = different from compressing/reencoding".

When I rip a CD into MP3 it gets compressed so no they're not intrinsically different.

lol of course they are, audio tracks on a CD album are not in MP3 format, you're ripping then converting! :D

@Brad:

Not true.

You can't "rip a CD into MP3."

You can convert/compress a CD into MP3.
You can rip a CD into WAV and keep it on your HD (no quality loss whatsoever).

Technically, ripping does not involve compression. :)

I beg to differ. It can do and it cannot do, it depends what you do with it.

I didn't say they were silly. I said when I "rip" my music it gets converted into MP3. It's all part of the ripping process.

Anyway this is all bollocks Lourdes still hasn't answered my question without using twisted words and programming language.

No... Ripping/extraction is the processing of extracting data from media. If you're "ripping to MP3" you're doing DAE (Digital Audio Extraction - Ripping) then encoding.

For some reason the "scene" refers to rips improperly. They use it for games that have had content removed or compressed and video that has been re-encoded. But they're idiots who can't spell for the most part. :)

FA Comp up.

I'll do CE later. R2UK Vs. R3K Remaster. The R1 isn't worth including.

I want to know what's going on with these WKW DVD's. The R3K's were clearly made from the same masters as the R4 and R2UK and the audio wasn't done by the Koreans. I gues the old rumours were true. There has been work done to restore his older work.

They could be using the Fortissimo masters.

Already I really care about WKW wise is a decent uncut, English subtitled Ashes of Time. It's the only one that really needs a remaster! :shock:

Yes again it is. For example: Hard Boiled and The Killer, why include all the crud version? Because it makes it complete.

Besides there's nothing wrong with the R1 per say, just because there are better version doesn't immediately make it not worth including.

Are we going to drop old captures each time new ones come out?

There is no point at all in wasting space with anything inferior.

Of course there is for reasons I've just mentioned. Please provide time codes so others can add the so called inferior ones.

I'd prefer not to take someone else's word for it, which is better. Opinions can differ wildly.

Lourdes is using NVidia's PureVideo decoder.
I hope he's remembered to deactivate deinterlacing.

Otherwise we won't be able to add any caps to his comparisons.

All discs were progressive bar distributor logos. Put them through DGMPGDec to check.

Beav updated their ATGB and DOBW comparisons with the releases from the recent UK Tartan WKW boxset.

Both new Tartan releases look to be the best around. I would so double-dip DOBW if it were available separately, missed opportunity there Tartan.

No kidding, it wasn't long ago that I got the ITMFL/2046 pack. No point in getting this.

Do you prefer the look of the ITMFL Criterion or the Tartan (port-over of French release)?

Thanks for those Beaver comparisons Eva.

Agreed they're definitely better and the commentaries look nice too. Personally I wouldn't upgrade as the jump in quality isn't great enough to double dip. It would be my third DVDs of these films.

I didn't realise it had both 2046 and ITMFL (2 Discs).

The Tartan, definitely. From all the boosting the Criterion loses a significant amount of detail and a lot of the period feel.

Thanks Eva.

If they source the HK DVD extras it will be the best (a second disc featured around the WKW extras). I "think" the HK DVD is interlaced and does have English subs for all films or nothing at all (not a problem when only one of the three isn't in English anyway, except for some Italian).

The Sony is a nice effort (I think it's Sony) but is limited on extras and loses the HK DVD DTS.

EDIT: Then again :( -

* Theatrical trailer
* Filmographies

If you want the best PQ (assuming the HK DVD is interlaced) pick up the R1. I'd guess.

Yeah, the HK is interlaced.

Nah, it's a Warner release. Extras don't really matter to me for this title, it's just a series of short films after all. It could have the best mixed DTS track of all time, but it doesn't mean a thing if the transfer is garbage - and here the transfer is interlaced shit.

Regarding R1:- Apparently the Antonioni section was filmed in English sync-sound, but the version featured here is CUT and has been DUBBED into Italian. See here.

TBH all I want is the WKW short where Gong Li gives Chang Chen hand jobs, but may as well try to get the best DVD around. Hopefully AE will get it right.

I didn't know they messed up the R1 thanks Eva. The English on that Italian segment is a bit annoying, it's clearly not their first language, that said I'd still prefer it in English to some odd dub (even though Italian is no doubt their original language, I wonder if it's them speaking Italian??).

I'm not at all surprised the R1 is cut, no doubt to get an R from those MPAA conservative wankers :shock:

The HK DVD doesn't have the best transfer tbh, more than likely because it is interlaced. I'd still take it over the R1 though which looks a mess.

The 2 disc version was Limited too so only the 1 disc may still be left.

Yeah you're probably best to wait for the UK AE effort now, pity it's bare-bones. The HK DVD extras look pretty good, and lengthy. The R1's look awful.
