Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex season 1 - R4 warning

Post by EvaUnit02 »

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex season 1 - R4 (Madman)

Well the story is that Madman supposedly received botched HD masters for at least episodes 23-26. I can confirm that those four episdes have severe ghosting, noticeable on a 32" running in 576p mode AND on a 21" connected via composite RCA leads.

I raised a bruhaha over at the Madman forums and received the following reply:-
the reason this is the case is due to the masters that we received. Unfortunately there's not a whole lot we can do about it. Unless we receive some new masters that fixes this issue we cannot issue a new version of the show.

It should still be very much watchable but we do apologies if you feel this is unsatisfactory, we have done the best that we can with the materials that we have been given and will endeavor to fix it should it become available to us.

(Ouch, didn't notice that nasty compression artefact from cap 7 before.)

All caps are taken within the first 13 minutes of episode 24, with PowerDVD using Tom's settings + Lourdes' Fallen Angels resolution.

If there's ghosting even when deinterlacing is turned off, then their transfers are SERIOUSLY fucked-up. :o
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

NTSC-PAL isn't possible in this case. At least not one made by Madman.

All the masters Madman had received before this last one were Native PAL. Since the masters they received for this last volume looks different the Japanese must have made a serious mistake.

I wonder if the UK DVD is the same?

Does anyone kow?

The UK and the Australian releases were authored by different people (sometimes the Madman stuff gets published in the UK as well).

I have the UK Complete 1st GIG Box Set (7 Discs) and the last episodes in that set suffered from ghosting (maybe the entire last disc, I don't remember).

Mmmm looks like to be a common cause then. Are R1 affects by this, do they use the same hd master?

The R1's aren't progressive at all.

And here I thought the R4 edition was all good. Looks like this show really is cursed. Out of three possible English-language releases, not one without any major problems.

Regarding the R1, it also has terrible edge enhancement (especially on the first two discs). Apart from this ghosting the R4/R2 looks way better.

The R2 has all sorts of extra glitches. See the DVDTimes reviews.

Nah, Madman author all their own DVDs. They do receive masters and the like from the UK though. Eg they have a close relationship with Optimum and Manga Ent. UK.
