He was genuinely knowledgable on HK cinema though, and out of respect for the fact that he is a friend of Yi-Long's and also not an active member of BnB now and can't defend himself, I think maybe we should refrain from any more personal insults at least? Just a suggestion.

Shingster wrote:DVDforums is a whole different beast to DVDTimes, I'm not sure how much input Colin has actually had in the T&C's of the place.
I'm 95% Colin also runs DVD Forums but fair point I'm really talking about DVD Forums not DVD Times, agreed best to keep them separate. I see him post on DVD Forums.
Shingster wrote:a few moderators there have been in that position longer than Colin has been site owner after all.
Really? I never knew DVD Times had had more than one owner.
Shingster wrote:in fact one or two of our reviewers don't get along with certain moderators there at all (I think).

I myself have seen times when moderators have deliberately baited somone until they ban them (I think it actually happened to Kev Gilvear/Moldiver once, not sure.)
Very interesting about the Times/Forums divide.

Exactly, about baiting members. I have too and that's where their powers get over their head. It's worrying to read on the Forums, that a mod is actually getting great pleasure in issuing black book warnings and bans.

That's where of course if you disagree someone inside has a much greater power speaking to Colin than regular members would.
Shingster wrote:This forum has you and Tom, which is enough because the member list is pretty modest and almost everyone knows each other pretty well, so when trouble/arguments do flare up we can all shrug it off and still be civll to each other. I'm not so sure that'd be the same if there was over a thousand members, let alone 50,000! :D
My god that many. How many active regularly though?

Bullets has 493 members but only roughly a dozen frequent members and 20-30 fairly frequent.
TBH if there's a lack of comparison reviews on DVDTimes, then it's almost certainly because the reviewer doesn't have access to alternative DVDreleases or they just couldn't be arsed to provide a comparison review.
I was specifically talking about the low resolution making it hard to tell the difference between transfers which aren't greatly different.

But no you guys don't shy away from comparing DVDs generally speaking. I've often said DVD Times reviews are some of the best on the web.
Shingster wrote:No, it's really just a case of not blatantly stating you can buy a DVD cheaper elsewhere, it'd be pretty unfair to take a free copy of, say the 3-disc Criterion release of Seven Samurai from CDwow, then say "buy it from DVDpacific, it's cheaper there". If we let the readers say that in the comments thread, it'd still be screwing CDwow over.
Fair point. Have I done that? If so point taken.

The other way around, I don't think Colin was one of the original owners of TheDVDForums, and some of the mods have been mods for a long long time there. Colin is the sole owner of DVDtimes and Dave Foster is the editor, the guy who pretty much keeps the place running.
bradavon wrote:My god that many. How many active regularly though?
Only a fraction I'd imagine, going on the stats that appear at the bottom of the homepage each day.
bradavon wrote:Fair point. Have I done that? If so point taken.
At least twice that I know of. Dave's started t edit them out of posts though :D

I've just got a black make for giving a recommendation, talk about over the top. Here's what I said -

DVD Forums Mod: It's not worthy of stickiness (not that anybody reads them anyway).[/quote]
If there weren't so many people might. I'm not trying to be sarcastic just that personally they get lost between all the other stickies you've already read.

DVD Forums Mod: I take it you have chosen to ignore my post from yesterday.

The mark says:

Arguing with mod/admin decision

"Continually question moderating decisions onsite despite being told to take it to email"

Call me stupid but do you see a question? Where on earth did I argue with anyone?

The post yesterday is referring to a question I publicly asked, it's all bollocks as I only e-mailed Alan the other week so he blatantly knows I do as asked.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also have another black mark for a typo which resulted in bypassing the auto-censor. I spelt BugMeNot wrong which is a banned word but as I misspelt it it didn't *** it out so I didn't know.

I asked if there's a list of banned words and the answer was no. We're expected to be mind readers. I should've noticed after another member made some joke about BugMeNot (apparently that was enough warning, a joke!) and to use the mods words edited my posted and the other members, which I pointed out how can I edit another members posts? I got no answer.

After a few e-mails the mod implied he'd got my black mark wrong but wouldn't remove it.

You couldn't make this shit up. What amazes me is they act all surprised when members get annoyed. See here:

http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/show ... p?t=439868

It makes my and Tom's modding look like pocket change.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We should turn this thread into "Talk about your DVD Forums/Times Black Mark run-ins" :D . I'm sure there'd be a few.

Romero was banned I believe.

FYI the following you don't need to be a member to view:

* Bargain forum - Actually the best forum on DVD Forums, loads of great bargains
* High Definition Discussion Forum
* HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Discussion
* Modern Cinema and DVD Forum
* Classic Cinema and DVD Forum
* World Cinema and DVD Forum
* Music and DVD Forum
* Home Entertainment Hardware Forum

More than I was expecting, obviously only the Bargain forum has any use if you're not a member.

Tsk tsk, getting yourself a black mark.

Nah I wouldn't worry about it man. It's the internet - a black mark is about as threatening as one of Eva's prepubescent tantrums.

See if you can get another one for a laugh. :D

I dont even know of I have black marks or not :) I never got a massage saying I have, but I was banned and told off etc..for saying things to a mod.

Still I just ignore the morons as theres a few who get away with a lot, so I just stay away and try not to post in the flame wars they get away with as hell I would be banned quickly. I mainly stick to non flame war threads like I HATE PAUL ANDERSON, THIS IS THE BEST FILM EVER, YOUR WRONG IF YOU LIKE ANY OTHER! etc.. the threads that really pee me off and are there for blatant flame wars.

Very true Romero. There's no doubt some of the mods at DVD Forums and Reviewers at DVD Times hold personal grudges.

I couldn't agree more. I've seen blatant T&Cs breaking and it's ignored, how do I know? Because the same members keep doing it again and again.

I know that is the "funny" part :D . You should see the e-mail you get when you get a black mark, it's written as if god wrote it.

I'll keep it next time I get one (I'm bound to at some point). I do have this:

"As you now have the two warnings to you name a third could see your account locked for a week so what now is up to you."

I shouldn't get annoyed. I wouldn't if what I'd been warned for was accurate.

Jeez, those DVD Times guys sound like a bunch of wankers.

They seem to really get off on bullying posters.

What's wrong with BugMeNot? I don't get it.

I'm almost tempted to join to be the fastest new member ever to be banned. :D

But why give them the publicity?

Arrrgh! it's The DVD Forums, not DVDTimes, we've got nothing to do with how that place is ran. :D

Don't waste your time, I've seen people join and get banned immediately coz they joined to start a thread pimping some dodgy site.

Well, the topic header says DVD Times(?)

EDIT: OK, I see Brad was complaining about DVD Forums as well (I thought they were the same thing).

But TIMES has introduced the Black Book too right? People are already getting warning e-mails.

Yup, but there's only 7 rules for the comments section of DVDTimes, and I think only 4 of these will earn you a black mark if you break them.

Yup I remember his saying people were racist, as we assumed he was white for some reason (he was) and he had a fit saying he could be black, or mexican etc.. what a fool. Still on all forums I am sure.

I can't believe you've just soiled the British nation by including Gil in it. Wash your mouth out saying such vulgar language.

He was definitely American and thankfully not an average example of one.

Markgway wrote:What's wrong with BugMeNot? I don't get it.
BugMeNot is a Firefox extension (and website) that allows you to circumvent registering by using other peoples logins (not active logins just ones left lying around). It of course relies on bad website management whereby the webmaster doesn't clear down old logins.

I've no idea how it manages to work out the passwords.
Shingster wrote:Arrrgh! it's The DVD Forums, not DVDTimes, we've got nothing to do with how that place is ran. :D
Colin P has introduced Black Books to both DVD Forums and DVD Times has he not?

But yes it's the DVD Forums mods who have delusions of grandeur.
Shingster wrote:Yup, but there's only 7 rules for the comments section of DVDTimes, and I think only 4 of these will earn you a black mark if you break them.
True it's much harder to get a warning at DVD Times. Check out the DVD Forums rules:

http://www.thedvdforums.com/

At size 10 font there are 3 pages of rules. Which wouldn't be so bad if the mods didn't twist them to their advantage.

I assumed he was latino, mostly because when he sent me an email once he signed off as Paulino Gil, which is a Spanish/Portugese name. Plus, I remember him mentioning he could speak Spanish over on the AsianDVDGuide forums.

He denied he was latino in the old BnB thread on his nationality though, so who knows.

I bet it's him.

I've just received a Black Book for merely asking if advertising size could be reduced. Which incidentally doesn't break any DVD Times T&Cs. See here: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=63665

Am I missing something? Does it sound like I was complaining?

Apparently I am by "Complaining about advertising on a DVD Pacific sponsored review" a detailed in my account details.

p.s - So much for DVD Times being different from The DVD Forums. I'll add it to the collection :D (all really superfluous reasons I might).
