Watched Nausicaa this afternoon, and REALLY enjoyed it. Probably next to Mononoke, my favourite Ghibli movie thus far. Animation and characters were really good, story kept me interestes throughout, and the whole NTSC-PAL thing wasn't noticable to me at all... (played it on my XBOX btw)

Already orded Whisper of the Heart last week, so should be arriving soon, and will probably order Porco Rosso and Laputa the coming days...

Also downloading some new anime, but havnt really tried watching it.

Since I'm now completely done with school, I have some spare time again for martial arts and drawing (which both have taken a bit of a backseat during my school days, apart from short bursts of intensive training) so I'll also have time for watching anime more regularly now again, untill I find a job...

I watched Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent last week. It it is made of absolute win. Very intelligent character study of people in modern society reaching their breaking point.

Yi, try to grab the R1's of Sherlock Hound while you can, the last TV series that Miyazaki was involved in. Geneon's licence expires this month.

I'll check out some reviews, but it's not on my priority list yet. What happens when geneon's license runs out!? Wont someone else just pick it up?

Anyway, watched the first 4 episodes of Capita today. It's a show about a young boy that gets into kart-racing. Not sure what to make of it yet.
Animation and character design is pretty ugly, but it's also entertaining so far. Seems a bit aimed at a younger audience then I am, but it doesnt really bother me yet so far...

It's got a pretty good score at animenfo.com btw, 9,1 I believe... so I'll give it a chance these next couple of days.

Their releases of it go into moratorium and the North American licence is up for grabs, I imagine that the licence won't be cheap though.

IC ic...

Ah well... I can wait a while and see how things work out with that. maybe download it if it takes too long...
Seems like an interesting series but I'm not gonna bother importing a R1 series...

Anyway, just watched a new anime-show, called Death-Note.
Only seen the first episode but it seems very VERY promising.

the premise is basically that Death has dropped his Death-Notebook from up there, and it has fallen onto earth, where a teen named 'Light' has found it. The notebook describes that whatever name is written down in it, that person will die. Light first is kinda skeptic about it, but tries it out anyway, and finds out it's for real. He then makes it his ambition to cleanse the world of all evil people...

Like I said, episode 1 is great. It would make a great movie, and I'm not quite sure if this can be interesting over a long period of time, but I'm really lloking forward now to also watch episode 2 and 3, which are also already out...

Also, a 2nd show I've been checking out is Mushishi. I think I've mentioned it before very briefly, but it seems a very good interesting show, a bit supernatural with wood spirits or whatever... great artwork and just very eerie and goregous at the same time. Has a bit of a Miyazaki feel to it, in the sense that even though some things seem very scary cause we dont know them, they're not all that scary once you get to know and understand it a bit better.

The Death Note manga is highly praised by pretty much everyone who has read it (it frequently makes Manga fans' Top10 lists) and what's more it only ran for 12 volumes so the anime should be able to remain 100% faithful to it - so long as it remains popular, 12vols should equate to somewhere around 60-70 eps. Unfortunately this remains one of the many Manga series I own but haven't gotten round to reading yet.

The Death Note film came out in Japan earlier this year as well, I think a 2nd one is due very soon.

I just finished watching the first 3 episodes and it's just a great show so far. Cant wait for pt 4 to be released, probably end of this week...

I didnt know there was a manga (doesnt surprise me though) and a real-life movie (does surprise me) about it, but for the time being I'm sticking with the anime.
I dont know if this could keep this same level of excellence for a 50-60 episode run, but if it does succeed in doing that, it will go down in history as one of the best shows ever.

I can only guess as to where it will all go from here (I'm thinking that LIGHT will start bumbing off innocent people as well, and also going nuts on more gruesome ways of having people killed, becoming a complete nutjob before the show is over...)

It's nice discovering a new show like this, but it's always shitty to now have to be forced to wait a week each time you've finished watching an episode...

YES! Gunbaster on DVD at last! FYI this was the first show by Gainax and directorial debut of Hideaki Anno. Bandai Visual is a superb DVD producer BTW, so it's in good hands.
Bandai Visual USA Inc., a leading innovator in Japanese animation, and Image Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq: DISK), a leading independent licensee, producer and distributor of home entertainment programming in North America, today announced that the 1988 anime series “Gunbuster” will be released for the first time on DVD February 20.

A favorite among anime fans, “Gunbuster” has been re-mastered in HD 24P format with newly translated English subtitles under the supervision of the original producers. The DVD set (SRP: $64.99) will contain all six episodes on 3 discs and includes a 24-page color booklet.

* First-time U.S. DVD release
* Newly translated English subtitles for all six episodes
* Bonus clips totaling 30 minutes
* 24-page color booklet
* All packaged in an original deluxe art box imported from Japan

Found the trailer for the live-action japanese movie Death-Note. Looks very good.

Also downloading Berserk at the moment btw. Watched a couple of episodes a few years ago and thought it was great, so should be fun to now watch the whole series.

Just finished Bebop, was my second time around and it was even better. About to sit down to the movie in HD. I was going to watch the movie at the point where it fits into the series but I thought better of it.
If you haven't seen Bebop then you've missed the greatest ever anime series. Even greats like Eva and GitS:SAC don't come close to the consistent level of excellence in Bebop IMO.

I tried One Piece, Bleach and Naruto recently just to satisfy my curiousity. All rubbish as expected. Know the easiest way to spot a crap anime? Lengthly conversations in the middle of fights. All the bad ones have them, and it's far the beyond the "ahaha, Mr. Bond" sort of thing.

I think next I may try Samurai Champloo (same directory as Bebop though I suspect it's a bit weak) or Samurai 7 which is supposed to be like the Kurosawa film and apparently not too bad. Unlike Kaze no Yojimbo which was based on Tsubaki Sanjûrô and complete crap. There's this great looking series called Koi Kaze that I started watching but it's a sort of romantic drama schoolgirl incest thing and I'm not in the mood for that right now.

Incest seems to be a common fixture of the romance genres in anime and manga.

I suspect you may be pleasantly surprised by Samurai Champloo. Koi Kaze is a beautiful anime at times, but also one of the most downbeat and depressing I've seen.

Hope so, I have no position to judge from, all I did was flick through the first volume and went "gah, an effeminate villain." :)

Has anyone seen Mind Game? That film is absolute bonkers.

Why it has slipped entirely under the radar, I dunno.

In the news, the Naruto filler is finally coming to an end (If anyone still cares at this point.).

Naruto Shippuden Starts in 2007, Movie Due in SummerAccording to TV Tokyo's official website for the Naruto TV series, a new chapter in the Naruto Anime series, entitled "Naruto Shippuden" (literally translated, Naruto Gale Saga or Naruto Wind Saga) will begin airing in early Spring 2007.

Further more, a movie for the "Shippuden" series is scheduled to hit Japanese theatres in Summer 2007.

Most of the promotional materials include the phrase "Naruto will change!" The "Naruto Shippuden" portion of the manga takes place 2.5 years later, and features several character design changes. You can see these on TV Tokyo's promotional page for Shippuden here.

Not many details have been released yet, but according to the TV Tokyo website, some footage will be shown at the "Jump Festa" on December 17th and "special news" for Shippuden will be shown in theatres along with the Bleach - Memories of Nobody movie that enters theaters on December 16th.

It's not your usual animation, but I thought it was pretty well known for a title that's had no marketing.. I love Studio 4°C. I thought that Mind Game was beautiful and warm but some parts were almost boring because they went on a bit too long.

Watched Jin-roh recently I take it?

No, Stray Dog and The Red Spectacles.

Speaking of Jin-roh, do you know if the R1 is progressive?

About fucking time Naruto spoilers came to an end, they've got to air the Kakashi Gaiden before "Naruto Shippuden" starts, so look out for that. The title they've given part 2 is a little spoilerish for certain parts of the overall arc, tut tut! :D

You watch Naruto? Hahahahaha.
Wait both of you do. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I think the Jin-Roh R1 is progressive but it's a rather poor transfer. The first R2J is subbed.

I don't just watch Naruto, I review it. I cover Anime and Asian films for DVDtimes. Not that I need an excuse to watch one of the best Shounen series around. I also read the Manga.

Please don't say I listen to any form of Asian Pop music at all (beyond what is featured in films and TV), I think the shit that clogs our airwaves is bad enough! :P

God no, I'd rather drink turpentine than watch Naruto ever again. I posted that for news item of the benefit of those that do, like Yi and possibly LD.

Anyone know if the R1 Cowboy Bebop Remix DVDs are progressive?

Sorry, you're dead to me. :(

Eva, they're progressive but there are quite a few places that comb and they're FUGLY compared to the R2J/R3K which are FUGLY in the first place. Composite sources. The English/Japanese 5.1 is very nice. I'm making myself a combined version, R3K video and remix audio.
