Roald Dahl hated the film (and yes, I did read the book as a nipper, before I saw the film) The book is a classic but still, I think the film has fun songs, marvellous design and sets and Gene Wilder is excellent as Wonka, giving the man a darker/sinister streak too.
Yeah, I hear the Burton version is meant to be a lot closer to the book and have more of Dahl's words in it (for example in the '71 film, most of the words that came out of Wonka's mouth were literary quotations).
I do have a soft spot for that version of the story though
They weren't because Dahl's original script was rejected and extensively re-written, and some things Wonka says in the film are definitely quotes, like "99-44-100% pure" (the combination on the safe) was a famous ad slogan for Ivory Soap. His words of "So shines a good deed" (when Charlie gives him the Gobstopper) are from Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice".
"Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker" comes from a poem called "Reflections on Ice Breaking" by Ogden Nash.
According to IMDB, the song he sings on the boat (There's no earthly way of knowing.. is it raining/is it snowing/is a hurricane a-blowing... etc) is the only quote/song that is directly from the book.
