X-Men Origins: Wolverine

There's talks of potential X-men spin-offs in the works. The Wolverine one which has been long proposed since before X-men 2's release; one about students in Xavier's Academy; a "young Magneto" film and one dealing with Emma Frost:- the former White Witch and Cyclop's current wife in the comics (Jean Grey is dead at the moment AFAIK).

The X-Men mutants plan to divide and conquer.

After last weekend's four-day, $122.9 million debut of X-Men: The Last Stand, the third film in the Marvel Comics series, producers are devising ways to launch some characters into their own franchises.

The first spinoff will be Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. His character has an as-yet-unrevealed back story in which researchers replaced his original bones with a metal skeleton. Jackman has signed on to star and co-produce, and X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner says it will likely head into production next year.

"We've also talked about doing something on the kids in (Professor X's) school, focusing on their lives, and less of a global adventure for the team," says Hutch Parker, production president of 20th Century Fox.

The studio is also exploring a movie with Three Kings director David O. Russell based on the character of Emma Frost, a sexy mutant telepath who can transform her skin into diamonds. She is an X-Men comics regular but was not featured in the movies.

Another likely solo project: Magneto, also in the script phase. The film will focus on his youthful pre-villain days, Shuler Donner says.

Though it would require a younger actor for those sequences, she says the film would need Ian McKellen to anchor the flashbacks. "What's a Magneto movie without Ian?" she asks.

Jackman: Wolverine Moves Ahead

NEW YORK—Hugh Jackman, who reprises his role as Logan/Wolverine in the upcoming sequel X-Men: The Last Stand, told SCI FI Wire that a second draft of the proposed Wolverine prequel movie has already been completed. Jackman would star in and co-produce the film, which would likely receive a quick green light from 20th Century Fox if The Last Stand proves successful.

"It's probably going to be a prequel to the movies that exist, and I've just seen—not just, but about three months ago I saw—the second draft that David Benioff [Troy] has done," Jackman said in an interview. "You probably know David. He's a huge fan of the franchise and probably one of the hottest writers in town, and so the lucky thing that I have is him as a partner on this and, for me playing Wolverine, that [they're the] A lists of the A lists, and there are a number of them that are passionate and want to work on it."

Jackman added: "So I think and they think that there is enough in this character to substantiate not just an appendage to the movie that exists, but an entity on its own. I don't want to make Wolverine be a kind of disguise for X-Men 4. I want to make it stylistically and character-wise as different as we can and show some new stuff. I play him, and I would [be expected to] say this, but I think that he is one of the most interesting characters in terms of action heroes and comic-book heroes around." Wolverine has a script and will reportedly begin shooting in a year's time. It is also a prequel.

ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! caught up with The Prestige star Hugh Jackman, who gave us an update on his upcoming "X-Men" spinoff, Wolverine.

"We've now signed off on the script. If you know about the history of 'X-Men' movies, that's a revolution for us. We're a year away from shooting the film and we have the script," Jackman said. "And, by the way, it is unbelievable. It's a David Benioff script. He's probably the hottest writer going around town, and he was beating down our door to write this movie. It was the most amazing thing. So, we have this fantastic script. I've got a couple of movies coming out in the next month, and I might be able to tell you who the director is by then. We're seriously into talking about it now."

He added that Wolverine will definitely be a prequel but will not follow the Japanese storyline that comic books have addressed.

"At present, no. That is still something we really want to do. What we need to do is establish who he is and find out how he became Wolverine," he explained.

Jackman said he is also interested in making a sequel to Wolverine. "I'm not ruling it out," he smiled.

We already know that.

Hmm I'm not sure one the one hand more X-Men stuff is good but on the other it really won't be the same without the others. Give me X-Men 4 please.

David Benioff wrote the screenplay for Try (oh dear) and 25th Hour (apparently very good).

He's really good in that, but I think he's better in Fight Club and American History X.

Shot-by-shot analysis

It may turn out decent, Gavin Hood is a competent director.

According to the trailer, Wolverine fought in the American Civil War, WW1, WW2 and Vietnam. I like the shot of the Omaha Beach landing (D-Day Normandy Invasion) where he's chewing on a cigar.

Danny Huston (the eldest brother from The Proposition) plays a younger version of Brian Cox's character from X-Men 2. He's a talented character actor.

Thanks Eva. I'm hopeful this will be decent. I thought Wolverine was supposed to age like everyone else, no?

EDIT: This looks great but then so did X-Men 3 based on the trailer. I didn't realise it would have some of the other X-Men characters in it too.

No, his healing factor always slowed his aging significantly in the fiction.

I remember one episode of the 90's X-Men cartoon where Wolverine (he was a soldier, this was way before the Weapon X programme and even longer before he joined the X-Men) teamed up with Captain America to fight Nazis in WW2.

Yeah, Wolverine is already very old. I didnt think he was already around during the american civil war though. Never read anything about that in the comics when I read them.

One of my favourite Wolverine stories is where he fights The Hand (bunch of ninjas) alongside Cap America in WW2 in Madripor(sp?) (fictional asian city)
It was drawn bij Jim Lee and was just a nice short quick 1 issue story.
