Going by the DVD Beaver caps the R1 2 Disc SE is sharper. The R1 misses out on the UK's 3rd disc of interviews but of course still has hours of extras.
I think the UK is cheap as chips now though. If they are about the same I'd probably go for the R1. I remember it looking definitely better.
Personally I'm happy with my R4 1 Disc. It's anamorphic with DD5.1 and that's enough for me, it has a few minor interviews too.
Both it and The Green Mile are decent but both are overrated IMO, especially The Green Mile and no way would I put Shawshank in my top 10. That I really can't understand.
EDIT: Crikey the R4 has the best PQ but the UK R2 the best AQ as it also has DTS:

That said the R4 is virtually bare-bones so I'd still recommend R1, there's not much in it but as you can see the UK R2 SE is inferior but you may want DTS and those hours of interviews.

It is getting to much of a common trend just to up the bit-rate that little bit and it really is a little bit. I've no problem with it for mega long films but the current DVD on 1 disc has proven it's not needed.EvaUnit02 wrote:Christ! Not another film spread over two discs!
We all know Columbia Tristar's Superbit range made the DVD look SOOO much better, not!

A 3 hour film + a commentary can be accommodated on 1-disc fine (eg the Casino SE, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly extended SE).
Notice how they've got extras on Disc 1, I don't see why they can't put all of them of disc 2. They've done the same bloody thing with King Kong Extended. Why? It doesn't even have a DTS track FFS.

Exactly. In the case of King Kong I suspect it's because Jackson is now known for his multiple disc releases so they thought they better do the same here.
Oddly Kingdom of Heaven at 191 minutes and lets face it Apocalypse Now: Redux at 201 minutes work fine being split but King Kong will suffer with a cut. Kingdom of Heaven for example has a proper intermission where it goes black and music is played between discs.
It works really well. Still Kong King is being split so we'll have to live with it. I'm not a big fan of Green Mile anyway.
I certainly think a film over 180 minutes is an acceptable split as:
A: That's a lot of footage on one DVD-9
B: A split after 100 minutes of footage is acceptable. If you have to get up sooner it's annoying.
It does make you wonder why Gangs of New York at only 150 minutes suffered on one DVD-9. I hear the R1 being split has better PQ. It's acceptable but not great on the UK R2 EIV.

First review, oddly it's of the R4. Both the R2 & R4 are out a good 2 weeks before the R1 SE, is this why we get the shit artwork? I'll pick up the R4, it should only be $20 NZD new.
