Play.com sending fake e-mails?!

Post by grim_tales »

Today I noticed this in my junk mail box - should I send something back to them and report it?

Subject: Card declined for order of "The Reel Collection: Desperado / El Mariachi (2 Discs)".
Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2006 11:00:55 +0100
>Dear Customer
>
>Thank you for your order with Play.com.
>
>When we tried to process your credit/debit card it was declined by your bank. We would ask you to please check all of the card details carefully.
>Your CREDIT CARD may have been declined because the card number, expiry date or start date is incorrect.
>If you are using a DEBIT CARD the card number, expiry date or start date may be incorrect. FOR Solo and Switch cards the issue number should also be checked.
>If you have made any changes to your account details and have clicked the 'Save changes' button we will automatically try to process your order again.
>If you have checked your details and they are correct it may be that your bank has declined your card as part of a random security check. In this situation you will need to contact your bank to allow the card to be processed.
>So you don't miss out and to get your order to you as soon as possible, we have reserved the item you have ordered, and will dispatch it as soon as we can process your card.
>Kind regards
>

:? Both of my orders (The Reel Tin and Wheels on Meals) have been shipped. I don't know what Play are talking about. At NO POINT did I see the message "Card Declined" in my order history. As my history says both orders have been posted fine.

If I were you, I'd just make a quick call to the bank to make sure. If it is true, you should swear the fucking hell out of them, for not letting you know once it happened. It's kinda lame that you would find something like that out after you have ordered something.

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Maybe they tried again and it was alright? :?
I hadn't changed my card and anyway WHEELS has been shipped and I have Desperado sitting on my shelf, (I also got a "Your order has been posted" e-mail for both) I've e-mailed Play to ask whats happened.

I've forwarded Play the e-mail and they said it appears to be fake/a rogue as according to their records, both my orders have gone through fine.
If spammers start faking e-mails from legit companies like Play (never had one of them before) then this sets a dangerous precedent. :?

Spammers already do from the likes of eBay. As long as you scan the actual url and e-mail reply address you should be safe.
